Baldies
A real-time strategy in which we take control of a tribe of bald humanoids, and our task is to direct them in such a way as to enable them to defeat their eternal enemies - the evil Hairies.
developer: Creative Edge Software publisher: Mud Duck Productions
Baldies is an RTS developed by Creative Edge Software. The production went to a number of platforms, including PlayStation 1 (developed by Mud Duck Productions) and PC (Panasonic Interactive Media).
Story
In Baldies, players take control of the title characters who suffer from lack of hair. Despite their friendly disposition, Baldies cannot enjoy a life of happiness and abundance because they are constantly threatened by their sinister, hairy opponents known as Hairies. In order to protect themselves from danger, our charges prepare for war - according to the rule that the best form of defence is an attack, they have to blast the enemy out of this world.
Mechanics
The action of Baldies is shown in isometric view. Our main goal is to take care of the development of the community of bald people, which we can achieve by setting them subsequent goals to achieve.
We start the game with one house equipped with several rooms - placing a character in a particular room assigns him a role to play in the conflict. The colour of their costume informs about the task we have assigned to a particular character - Baldies dressed in red are workers; builders wear blue; soldiers wear grey; and scientists working on new technologies are dressed in white. Experiments carried out by the latter enable them to invent traps, grenades or more ingenious murder tools in the form of explosive cows, which can be used in clashes with Hairies. Interestingly, the roles of individual Baldies can be changed depending on current needs.
Apart from that, the devs also provided us with several "divine" powers, such as throwing a fireball on an unexpected opponent, or equipping our charges with wings.
Technical aspects
The two-dimensional graphics of Baldies adopt a pleasing cartoonish style - the whole thing was enriched with rich color palette; the visual sphere is complemented by a catchy, idyllic soundtrack.
