Battle for Wesnoth is David White's project, developed with extensive support from free software developers and game developers. Production is inspired by classic turn-based strategies in the fantasy realities such as Age of Wonders or Heroes of Might & Magic.
The action of the game takes place in a fantastic world inhabited by people, elves, dwarves, dwarves, ploughs, goblins and dragons. The 13 campaigns, set in different periods of time, show the struggles between factions: loyalists, rebellious, undead, dragons, peoples of the north and the knalgans' alliance.
The game takes place in a turn-based system. During each turn the player has the ability to move subordinate units on a board with a hexagonal grid and attack enemy units. After fulfilling certain conditions, he can also recruit new troops (in the castle or stronghold), and increase the amount of gold gained in each round (requires occupation of the field with the village).
Battle for Wesnoth's combat mechanics is very simple. Each of the more than 200 types of units has specific psycho-physical attributes. Victory often depends on the initiative (who is the first to deal damage) and the use of the strengths of the formation and the weakness of the opponent.
The game allows you to compete with artificial intelligence or a living opponent. The player also has a lot of freedom in defining gameplay settings, such as age, faction, as well as setting parameters such as the amount of income generated by villages, the speed of advancement of units to subsequent levels and the option of war fog.
Battle for Wesnoth has a relatively simple, yet aesthetically made, two-dimensional visual setting. The fun is also enhanced by comic book inserts and atmospheric soundtrack.
