Bloody Roar: Hyper Beast Duel PS1

Bloody Roar: Hyper Beast Duel is the first installment of a popular series of three-dimensional fighting game, where warriors can transform into special forms that give them numerous additional animal skills. This production was created by Hudson Soft and its publisher in Europe was Virgin Interactive.

Mechanics

Bloody Roar: Hyper Beast Duel is quite a typical fighting game, with two warriors facing each other in a three-dimensional ring. They fight until one of them has exhausted their vitality. The distinguishing feature of Hudson Soft's production compared to the competition is a special bar that charges during the fight. After it is full, the player can transform their character into a corresponding animal alter ego, with a greater range of moves, strength and/or speed than the human form of a given warrior. Taking damage as a beast reduces the bar. After the bar is completely exhausted, the player will return to the normal character. Due to this mechanics, fights take on an additional tactical dimension - choosing the right moment for the transformation may determine the outcome of the battle.

Eight playable characters are at the player's disposal. Each of them has a different animal shape into which they can transformed. The latter include a wolf, a lion or a tiger, as well as more unusual beasts like a mole or a rabbit.

Technical aspects

Bloody Roar: Hyper Beast Duel's visuals stood out at the time of the game's debut, offering high quality character models and smooth motion animations.
