Flight Unlimited PC

Flight Unlimited is an advanced air simulator, in which we can sit at the controls of five faithfully reproduced civil aircraft. The game was produced by Looking Glass studio, having worked on the first two parts of Ultima Underworld and highly rated RPG System Shock cyberpunk from 1994.

Unlike military simulators - where, in addition to flying, we usually participate in a number of combat or patrol missions - Flight Unlimited focuses on pure pleasure, resulting from the ability to fly an aircraft. The creators concentrated on five models of civilian machines, each of which is actually used for different purposes and has slightly different characteristics. Available models include Bellanca Decathlon, Extra 300S and Sukhoi Su-31 aerobatic planes, Pitts Special S-2B biplane and G103a Twin II Grave glider.

In terms of gameplay, Flight Unlimited is actually a series of consecutive training flights, in which under the watchful eye of the instructor we learn the secrets of the art of pilotage - from the simplest manoeuvres to more advanced air stunts. The flight model is very realistic: the program simulates, among other things, the flow of air around the rudder surfaces, which means that the planes reproduced in the game behave in the skies just like their real counterparts. Those who already have the necessary skills can, of course, fly without obligation using the 4 available in-game airports in Sedona, Arizona, Springfield and Vermont.

Since Flight Unlimited is one of the first games to fill the CD-ROM to the brim, its strongest point is of course the audio-visual setting. Models of airplanes have been reconstructed to the smallest detail, and the terrain underneath looks like an aerial photo taken from a high altitude. The price for this visual feast is unfortunately relatively high hardware requirements. While 486 DX2 is enough to run the game, 1024x768 smooth graphics are not possible on most modern Pentium class home PCs.
