Imp of the Sun

Imp of the Sun is an indie 2D action platform game inspired by Peruvian culture and featuring hand-drawn graphics. It is a debut project of Sunwolf Entertainment studio.

Plot

The main hero is Nin, a gnome born from the last spark of the Sun. His task is to defeat the Four Guardians who led to the Eternal Eclipse. The world, which has been in darkness for centuries, is beginning to die, and conquering the light is the only chance to save it.

The story in the game is told both through conversations with NPCs and by reading descriptions contained in "kipu" artifacts, written by the ancestors who once lived in the Empire of the Sun.

Game mechanics

Imp of the Sun is a 2D platform game. The world, divided into different biomes (e.g. snowy peaks of the Andes or the Amazon jungle), can be explored in any order, completing both the main objectives and looking for side items. We travel through it usually jumping on platforms, so a very important element of the journey is precise distance measuring and using the environment to our advantage. Levels contain many hidden passages and shortcuts, so there are many ways to get through them. Collect special items to take to Suyana, the girl who witnessed our exile to Earth.

The combat is dynamic and we eliminate enemies by performing various combos, either using our fists or melee weapons. From time to time we also unlock special moves, such as spear throwing or sliding. Battles are made easier by being in constant motion, which makes it harder for enemies to hit us. Enemies are divided into regular and bosses: we meet five of the latter. Each of them has its own unique mechanics and combat tactics, which means that we have to find a different way to fight them all. For every victory we receive points, which are needed to improve the character. The development tree is divided into three categories: health, internal fire (which allows to perform special attacks) and attack (strengthening damage).

The title offers two game modes, one regular and one called "The Eclipse Mode" which makes all locations darken until our hero visits them.

Technical aspects

Graphics, full of details and a variety of colors, faithfully reflecting the style of Peruvian culture, is hand-made.
