Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is a new enriched version of Shin Megami Tensei V, which was released on the Nintendo Switch console in November 2021. The game represents the jRPG genre and it was developed by Atlus, the company overseeing the development of the series.
Plot
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance offers two storylines. The first of them, called Canon of Creation, allows us to embody a hero who, as a result of an unfortunate accident, loses consciousness and wakes up in the mysterious, post-apocalyptic world of Da’at. His chance of survival in this place is ensured by a connection with an unexpected ally, with whom he creates a new, powerful entity that is neither human nor demon, called Nahobino. In this way, the protagonist finds himself in the middle of a conflict between the forces of light and darkness, and the decisions he makes during his journey will determine the fate of the entire world.
The second story is called the Canon of Vengeance. It initially follows the path set by the Canon of Creation, but about halfway through the story it deviates drastically from it, leading to a different ending. During the adventure, we meet completely new characters and face the mysterious Qadistu, which is a cohort of four female demons.
Mechanics
In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). During the game, we traverse various locations, meet diverse characters and have conversations with them, make choices that affect the course of the story, and we carry out main and side quests.
As we progress, various demons may join us. Which of these beings will decide to support us depends, among other things, on the decisions we make, as well as whether we are able to pay them or give them a specific item. In addition to recruiting increasingly powerful demons, the game allows us to combine them with each other, thereby creating increasingly powerful units.
On the way, we often have to fight against opponents with whom we engage in turn-based skirmishes. In addition to regular enemies, powerful bosses stand in our way. Defeating them requires discovering their weak points, proper team composition, and the use of effective tactics. During the duels, we charge the magatsushi bar, after filling which we gain access to powerful combat skills.
Clashes with adversaries are challenging, but the game allows us to choose one of several difficulty levels. Both the enthusiasts and those who want to focus primarily on the story can find something for themselves.
