Super Robot Wars 30 is a tactical RPG with turn-based combat system, belonging to the popular series developed by Namco Bandai. The project was created by B.B. Studio, a Japanese team known from many previous installments of the series, which was formed from a merger of BEC and Banpresoft studios belonging to the publisher.
Plot
In terms of story, the game is one big crossover, featuring characters and elements from dozens of popular Japanese mecha brands (the game was listed in the Guinness World Records as the RPG that uses the most different brands). All of these characters join forces to face an army of large monsters known as the Kikaiju.
The player takes on the role of a man or woman wandering through the ruins of Japan. The action begins near an earth defense force base around which many refugees have gathered. Soon after our character arrives at this place, it is attacked by Kikaiju forces. As a result, the entire crew, which was to steer the state-of-the-art Dreistragger ship, is killed. Desperate commanders give the unit into the hands of students and instructors of the nearby academy. Our character also joins the fight, finding an abandoned mecha in the hangar.
Mechanics
Super Robot Wars 30 is a tactical RPG, so the gameplay focuses on battles. Skirmishes are played in turn-based system and we command a team of mechs, and we observe the events from isometric camera.
Combat system is very extensive. We have a lot of robots with various features and techniques to choose from. Some of them can also transform. Pilots also have their own special skills, allowing them to perform more powerful attacks, as well as avoid hits or launch counterattacks.
Missions in the game are varied. Many of them require specific tasks, not just defeating all enemy forces. We have to occupy given locations, protect the evacuation or neutralize enemy commanders.
Between battles we use resources gained in battles to train pilots, improve robots and gain bonuses to strengthen our army.
Game modes
Super Robot Wars 30 offers a single player mode only.
Technical aspects
It features simple but pleasing to the eye 2D graphics, which effectively recreates the atmosphere of animated series about giant robots.
