The PC, PS4 and XONE release of The Evil Within 2 is a survival horror action game, which picks up the story 3 years after the events from the 2014’s The Evil Within. Both titles have been developed by Tango Gameworks led by legendary Shinji Mikami – the creator of such series as Dino Crisis, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, and Resident Evil.

Plot

Players get to assume the role of detective Sebastian Castellanos, who also happens to be the main protagonist of the first installment. This time around, detective Castellanos discovers that his daughter did not disappear during the fire at their house after all. In order to save her, Sebastian travels to a seemingly idyllic town called Union. Upon getting there, he learns that the town hides the door to an alternate reality. Interestingly enough, Sebastian’s daughter was kidnapped in order to create this terrifying dimension. To get her back, Sebastian has to leave the reality he knows and embark on a journey through a nightmarish realm created by an organization, which goes by the name Mobius.

Mechanics

The PC, PS4 and XONE release of The Evil Within 2 expands the gameplay mechanics from the original installment. Once again, players get at their disposal a third-person survival horror action game, building on exploration, puzzle solving and combat.

During the game one has to face numerous monsters, however it is up to the player to choose the method of dealing with them. The first option is to launch an open assault using heavy firearms. Players also may choose to sneak about the shadows and dispatch enemies with a crossbow or silent takedowns. There are also situations, where the best choice is to run for it, especially due to the fact that the ammo is scarce.

Like the original installment, The Evil Within 2 features claustrophobic locations, however this time around, players get to explore open and non-linear levels in accordance with their preferences.

Moreover, Sebastian’s equipment has been extended by a comlink device, which allows him to occasionally contact his former protégée – Julia Kidman – who remains in the real world. Her guidance can help Sebastian to overcome the obstacles he encounters in this nightmarish realm he has to investigate. Additionally, the device can be used to track objects, materials, and pieces of information and side missions.

Technical aspects

The game stands out in terms of its 3D visuals with a dark setting and creative, yet terrifying monster character models.
