Ultima: The First Age of Darkness is the second project of Richard Garriot, the creator of the cRPG cycle set in the fantasy world of Britannia. The plot tells the story of the times when a warlock called Mondain unleashed terror upon the world. After killing his own father, he became immortal and began his dark reign over his lands.
To rescue Britannia, Lord Brittish calls an avatar from the Earth by opening a moon gate. The player assumes the role of that newcomer and his task is to make sure than Mondain fails, and then deal with him once and for all.
Ultima was developed in 1980. The CGA graphics and the PC speaker sounds were far from awe-inspiring. Nevertheless, as the first cRPG ever, it earned popularity and fame among the players thanks to its detailed and enthralling story. Some people go back to it even nowadays, and Origin still sells this game as a part of Ultima Collection set.
