Bank of Sweden Prize in Economics

[edit]

There is no such thing as a Nobel Prize in Economics. Nobel never instituted a prize for economics, nor would he. Economists have free-rided the event to enhance their profession. The Bank of Sweden Prize for Economics was instituted with public money, tipical, and they forced their hand to be given at the same date. The marketing ploy is in the "In Memory of Alfred Nobel", which belies a laugh. Not even the most liberal economist would honor a monopolist business man, warmonger, inventor of Dynamite, suplier of the military. Only wikipedia can tell the truth. Britanica hires economists to write about the Nobel Prize in Economics and spread the small lie around.

I disagree with your comment. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel is commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Economics. There is no 'marketing ploy'. And, one more point: please suggest ways to improve this list. Wikipedia is not a social networking site. Masterpiece2000 (talk) 03:04, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spurious names?

[edit]

It seems that list is growing ever faster. It has outgrown its description as a list of "well known" economists, and I guess that's fair enough, but I'm particularly skeptical about the value of adding names too obscure to have their own wikipedia pages by now. I'll list them here in the hope that someone will find the motivation to check them out and add a note of justification (or otherwise).

I think most of these economists are reasonably well known (my definition of reasonably well known is that I have at least heard of them!) - so I'm happy with leaving them on the list. I agree however that there is not much point in adding names to the list until we have articles about them. Enchanter

I have books on my shelves by most of these people. I say leave them in. This is a list of economists, not a list of Wikipedia articles on economists. If you look at list of business theorists, we have articles on only a fraction of them. mydogategodshat 20:10, 15 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Well that's OK then, I guess I should have trusted that some real economists were watching over this page. Pm67nz 01:39, 16 Nov 2003 (UTC)

The list is pretty strong.. but I have issues with several marketing media consultant types.. Has any one else noticed this??--Oracleofottawa (talk) 00:28, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categorisation

[edit]

I think it would be useful to categorise the economists by the school of thought that they belong to. Do such things exist in economics, or do all economists think alike? :-) Or would they be better categorised by political outlook? I think dates of birth and death would be helpful too. I may come back and add the dates myself. Mr. Jones 22:21, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

It would occur difficult to categorize the economists in a general list by school of thought, many school of thoughts are grouped geographical like the Austrian, Chicago, Stockholm school. It would seem also that those economists would have the same opinion about different aspects but that's however not always true. They were very often discussing among each other about different subjects. Also many of the economists wouldn't agree to be categorized like that. And different sources could mention some differences. It would some therefore a bit POV to categorize it this way. It would be better to refer to the specific page of the different school of thougths. --Eigenwijze mustang 16:00, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Protection ?

[edit]

Is ti possible to know a little more about the reasons of the current "protection" status ? I have made a request for unprotection as it seemed to me from the history section that a suitable period had elapsed, but I am ready to change it if there is good reason. --Étienne 5 July 2005 12:14 (UTC)

Why does this list exist?

[edit]

Doesn't this list duplicate the content in category:Economists? --EGalloway 19:30, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This list predates the relatively new category system. The list of economics topics and list of economists is not used very much now that the category system is operational, however some people prefer the old system of lists. In the last two years we have gone from no effective navigation system to three of them. In addition to the old system of lists, and the category system, there is also a new system of portals. We seem to have gone from too few systems of navigation to too many. mydogategodshat 02:08, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lifespans

[edit]

It would be helpful to have the birthyear and so on listed to the right of the names —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.229.113.252 (talk) 18:27, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

the purpose of the list is to link to existing articles for the noted economist, where those details would reside. unfortunately, some don't have articles, which is problematic at best. Anastrophe 18:44, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas Friedman

[edit]

Should Thomas Friedman be added to this list since he is a best selling author of The World Is Flat??? -User:Noneforall 22:15, 8 November 2007

No. Friedman is not known for his contributions in economics. Masterpiece2000 (talk) 03:06, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redlinked economists who were deleted

[edit]

A recent edit deleted some of the most important economic theorists today because they do not yet have Wikipedia pages. Please contribute by starting pages for these highly notable people! --Rinconsoleao (talk) 12:04, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Or check the revision of 17:49, 22 Nov. 2007 for other red links you consider notable! --Rinconsoleao (talk) 12:04, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Barbara Bergmann is red and that is a crying shame! Added line why she should remain and a call for an article ASAP! I just don't feel competent enough to write this EMINENT academics article...--Oracleofottawa (talk) 00:32, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Barbara Bergmann article exists. I've fixed the link. CronopioFlotante (talk) 18:07, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A warming sense of completeness surrounds me....Thanks..--Oracleofottawa (talk) 00:39, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of Female Economists

[edit]

Could someone compile this list? I feel it would very useful —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.6.100.254 (talk) 21:55, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest deletion

[edit]

I suggest deletion of this list. It adds nothing compared to using a category instead. Furthermore, if only notable economists are included, we have a very different problem of who should be included and who shouldn't. Ulner (talk) 20:13, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, and the recent additions make it worse, as politicians were added with no mention of any economic research and achievement. Pgreenfinch (talk) 15:16, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Xavier Sala i Martín should be in S, not in M list

[edit]

Spanish (Catalan) economist Xavier Sala i Martín is currently listed in M. But, according to Spanish naming customs, he should be listed in S, because his first surname (probably father's first surname) is Sala, not Martín (his second —mother's first— surname). So his complete surname, used in alphabetical order in Spanish, starts with S.

Thanks a lot. 81.61.56.116 (talk) 18:03, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
