You can stroll past the A Nightmare on Elm Street house. You can take a picture of yourself dead at the bottom of the stairs from The Exorcist. And you can even shop inside the actual mall from the original Dawn of the Dead. But what Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Hardwick Township, New Jersey offers is something far more immersive. Their in-house tourism branch Crystal Lake Tours allows horror fans to actually camp at the real Camp Crystal Lake.
An active Boy Scouts camp to this very day, Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco was the filming location for Sean Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, the real campground playing the role of the fictional Camp Crystal Lake for the original 1980 horror classic. It’s a fact that the camp shunned up until around 2011, when they finally decided to embrace their role in horror history and give fans the opportunity to actually step inside one of...

In Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 slasher flick "Friday the 13th," Kevin Bacon plays a camp counselor named Jack who meets a memorable end. Jack and his girlfriend Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) enjoy a zesty round of marijuana and coitus while, unbeknownst to them, the corpse of their friend Ned (Mark Nelson) is stored in the ceiling above them. Marcie leaves to take a shower, and Jack lays back on the bed to relax and have a toke. A drop of blood lands on his brow. Jack is momentarily confused. His confusion doesn't last long, however, as the hand of a mysterious killer -- possibly the presumed-dead Jason Voorhees -- pops up from under the bed and grabs him by the forehead. An arrow pushes up from underneath the bed, puncturing Jack's neck from behind. The arrowhead emerges from his throat, and blood spurts up onto his face. Jack dies wearing a startled expression.

Tom Savini is a make up effects legend and an original badass. He is responsible for making the demise of hundreds of fornicating teenagers look realistic as well as bringing all sorts of disfigured monsters to life. Tom Savini was in love with horror before it was en vogue to work in genre film. He has pulled off some of the most realistic looking and insanely difficult practical effects ever. In addition to being responsible for some of the most epic impalements, exploding heads, decapitations, and stab wounds, Savini also acts and runs a make up effects school for aspiring FX artists. As a “thank you” to one of the most respected men working in fright films today, we are paying tribute by highlighting ten of our favorite special effects created by the renowned make up artist himself.

Anyone who reads this site with any regularity knows the name "Tom Savini" and knows it well. His Special Makeup FX work on films such as Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow, and Friday the 13th are legendary. His acting roles in From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror, and Land of the Dead equally so. However, as well as audiences think they know his work, the man behind the FX magic is a mystery… not unlike the great and powerful Oz.
In production now is a documentary called Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini which aims to change all of that by lifting the veil and showing who exactly Tom Savini really is. Recently, filmmaker Jason Baker unveiled a trailer for his film online and the response has been incredible to say the least. The donations to the film's Kickstarter page have yielded unprecedented results.
