He was a regular performer at the Salzburg Festival and the Glyndebourne Festival (UK). He was praised for his performances of the Evangelists in Bach's "Passions" under director Karl Richter.
He sang in Bach's "St John Passion" and "St Matthew Passion" in New York, Boston, and Washington DC.
He sang Tamino in "The Magic Flute" at Chicago's Lyric Opera in 1966.
