With 2023 Emmy Awards voting to begin in just a days on June 15, Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that “Documentary Now” will be in the limited series categories. It’s a shocking move from the television academy since previous seasons have brought nominations for Best Variety Sketch Series. That specific category has been renamed as Scripted Variety Series, and that is where AMC awards campaigners asked for the show to be placed for the 2023 ballot. That petition was ultimately denied.
The fourth season debuted on October 19, 2022, and finished on November 16 for AMC+. The series pretends to be a long-running documentary series but is actually a mockumentary of famous documentaries from the past. Dame Helen Mirren provides the narration for the program.

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
When Cate Blanchett first guest-starred in “Documentary Now!”, the two-time Oscar-winner played a part suited for her elite status. Directors Alex Buono and Rhys Thomas needed to cast for Izabella Barta, a Marina Abramović-inspired performance artist whose renowned work includes everything from sitting inside a rotating clothes dryer to flinging her paint-soaked body against a blank wall. Blanchett, no ordinary thespian, was the logical choice. If she can bring immediate veracity to both Lydia Tár, a pseudo-fictional character, and Katharine Hepburn, a very real Hollywood legend, then she can instill comedic credence to a legend of the art world, while perfectly serving the episode’s winking parody.
Her return to “Documentary Now,” however, somehow extends the actor’s range even further.

“Hawkeye” marked Eric Steelberg‘s first venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the cinematographer couldn’t have asked for a better show to make his MCU debut. “I loved that they were doing [a Hawkeye show]. I loved that they were kind of making fun of him in the show for being a forgotten character. ‘A branding issue.’ Such a funny line,” Steelberg tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “There were lots of fun opportunities on this project that I never really had an opportunity to do — scale and scope and visual effects but even the storytelling was really interesting, focusing a character for ability and sharing their ability is something I don’t think I’ve explored in other kinds of films I’d done. I had just come off of ‘Ghostbusters’ right before I did ‘Hawkeye,’ so a very different kind of project, different kind of VFX,...

As fun as the lyrics to Rogers: The Musical — the Broadway show within Disney+’s Hawkeye — are, they do invite the question: What layman lyricist possibly knew that Steve Rogers was known to say, “I could do this all day,” or that the team inhaled some shawarma following the Battle of New York?
On the latter matter, I for one assumed that the shopkeeper we saw in the background of The Avengers‘ shawarma scene simply ran to Page Six once the dust literary settled, to drum up business with tales of their “super” customers. But we have only seen Cap boast,...

Hawkeye isn’t as buff as Captain America, as obnoxiously sexy as Iron Man, as beautiful and mysterious as Natasha Romanoff, as boyishly charming as Spider-Man, as brawny and brainy as Hulk or a himbo god like Thor — he’s just a regular dude with Jeremy Renner’s rugged looks and above-average archer skills with zero superpowers. Many were skeptical at first of a standalone “Hawkeye” series at first, but the Disney Plus show proved critics and audiences wrong.
Currently boasting a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% score with audiences, it is evident that Hawkeye won over less-enthused Avengers fans with his salt-of-the-earth humility, his own tortured, morally questionable grieving process, his unfailing determination to spend Christmas with his family and his new need for hearing aids. Rhys Thomas, who directed the first two episodes and the grand finale, says that’s the point of Clint Barton’s...

A review of the Hawkeye season finale, “So This Is Christmas?,” coming up just as soon as I call you from a Christmas tree…
When you add up the individual episode lengths, the Disney+ Marvel shows have each been roughly three times as long as an MCU movie. In theory, that allows each series to spend more time with the characters — many of them third-stringers who barely got anything to do in the films, some of them wholly new to the franchise — and to weave together more story threads than...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline was hard to keep track of before a universe-changing event occurred in Avengers: Endgame, prompting the main chronology of the series to skip five years ahead mid-movie. Now we’re on the other side of “the Blip,” and the five-year time jump it prompted, but what does that mean for the latest MCU movies and TV shows, including Spider-Man: No Way Home? Let’s break it down, year by year.
MCU: 2018
Endgame begins in 2018, not too long after the events of Infinity War where half the universe was “blipped” out of existence with a snap of Thanos’ fingers.
MCU: 2019-2022
While we have gotten some glimpses into life in the MCU during the Blip, for the most part, none of the MCU stories take place during this time. Many have compared this fictional period to the real-life experience of living during a pandemic, especially during...

Photo: 'Hawkeye' As someone who is only lightly invested in the MCU, the past year I have felt a tad overwhelmed by the amount I need to watch just to keep up. While they almost all received glowing critical acclaim, it’s not necessarily enough to make me want to watch. From ‘WandaVision’ to ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’ to ‘Loki’, I just don’t feel like I have the time to watch everything that the empire puts out. To my surprise though, after watching the first episode of ‘Hawkeye’, I found myself wanting to know more and clicking to the next episode. It was an entertaining and fast-paced watch and despite what I thought before, maybe I am ready to delve into the complex world of the Avengers. Spoiler Warning: This story discusses plot points in Episode 3 and Episode 4 of Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye,” currently streaming on Disney Plus.
For its first four series for Disney Plus, Marvel Studios hired a single filmmaker to direct every episode of the season (including Matt Shakman for “WandaVision” and Kate Herron for “Loki”). On “Hawkeye,” however, Marvel split director duties between Rhys Thomas (“Documentary Now!”), who helmed the first, second and sixth episodes of the season, and the team of Bert and Bertie (“Troop Zero”), who helmed Episodes 3 through 5.
The process meant that Bert and Bertie had to step to the head of a train that was already stocked and well on its way — and the duo’s initial episode, “Echoes,” starts with a bang, involving a lengthy car chase sequence in which Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) fend off goons called the Tracksuit Mafia. The sequence opens with an extended,...

One of the first things you notice when watching the new Marvel series Hawkeye is the time and place in which it is set.
The show is located in New York City, and the time is some point after the events of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far from Home — meaning it’s taking place at the end of either 2024 or 2025, since the former took place in 2023 and the latter in the summer of 2024. And yes, we said “the end” of whichever year it’s in, because as one can glean pretty quickly, Hawkeye takes place just a few days before Christmas.
Yes, for the first time since 2013 — when Iron Man 3 was the first and, to date, last entry to take place during this part of the year — a Marvel Cinematic Universe story is set at Christmas time.

“Your whole thing is that you’re low-key,” Kate Bishop tells Clint Barton midway through the second episode of Hawkeye. “It’s a very hard brand to sell.”
This has been Clint’s burden throughout a long fictional life going back to his days as a third-rate Iron Man villain in the mid-Sixties.

Hawkeye Episodes 1 and 2
After more trailers, TV spots, and exclusive clips than you can shake a stick at, the first two episodes of Marvel’s Hawkeye are now streaming on Disney+.
But who asked for it? Hawkeye has steadily maintained his place in the Avengers line-up since 2012’s first team-up movie, and has been dutifully played by the double Oscar-nominated Jeremy Renner over the last decade, but Clint Barton is still a supporting character that the MCU itself has regularly mocked as being surplus to requirements.
Arguably, fewer MCU fans were as hyped for this series as they were for other supporting character Disney+ projects like Loki, but fans of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s spectacular 2012-2015 Hawkeye Marvel Comics run – which thankfully this series borrows from liberally – tentatively got their hopes up.

For more than a decade, Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton, aka “Hawkeye,” has been the odd man out in the Avengers squad. Now, he’s getting his own television series that both eschews the straightforward superhero script and looks exactly like what you’d expect from the Marvel machine.
Unlike most of his peers, Clint has zero superhero powers to speak of beyond an uncanny ability to hit a mark with his bow and arrow. The other exception to the rule was his best friend Natasha (Scarlett Johansson), aka “Black Widow,” who’s dead by the time Clint gets his own show. Now, Clint is still Hawkeye to the point that someone might ask for a selfie at the urinal, but he’s still apparently not famous enough to inspire many double takes even in the middle of Times Square. (Clint’s notoriety appears to shift in every other scene as the script demands.

"Hawkeye" is nearly upon us, with the first two episodes of the Marvel Studios series arriving on Disney+ on November 24 this week. Before the series premieres, we spoke with director Rhys Thomas ("Documentary Now!") about stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with experience from "Saturday Night Live" helping him. In our discussion, Thomas reveals the lessons he learned at "SNL" that ultimately prepared him for working at Marvel Studios. Plus, we talk about creating "Rogers: The Musical" and crafting the show's impressive, blockbuster-level opening sequence that ties directly into an MCU moment that fans will be all too familiar with.

With each of its Disney+ series — just like with many of its movies — Marvel Studios has attempted to accentuate a different genre or tone depending on the story, the themes and the characters, not to mention each show’s place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. WandaVision and Loki go for a surreal, cosmic, universe-bending vibe, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier operates on the level of a geopolitical thriller. So where does that leave the latest Marvel limited series, Hawkeye?
“Every time we start developing a project, we are always talking about how we set it apart from everything else that we’ve done,” says Hawkeye executive producer Trinh Tran in an interview with Den of Geek about the six-episode series.
“With Falcon and Winter Soldier, with WandaVision and Loki, they’re all different,” she continues. “In terms of Hawkeye, how can we set that apart from everything else?...

Over the years since his brief introduction in 2011's "Thor" and particularly his mostly brainwashed role in "The Avengers" the following year, Hawkeye has been cast as something of an underdog amid the much more powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clint Barton even hangs a lampshade on this in "Age of Ultron," laying out the absurd facts that, "The city is flying and we're fighting an army of robots. And I have a bow and arrow. None of this makes sense."
You might be mistaken to take that same mentality and apply it to the upcoming Disney+ "Hawkeye" series, however. Not...

Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas made his first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe late on a Friday night in 2014. Thomas had a short window to film with Chris Pratt, that week’s host of Saturday Night Live, where Thomas was a director. The whirlwind shoot resulted in a Guardians of the Galaxy parody trailer, the conceit being that audiences would show up no matter what Marvel did (including making a film centered on a random woman named Pam).

Hailee Steinfeld and Jeremy Renner brought some holiday cheer to Hollywood Blvd. on Wednesday night for the launch of their new Disney plus series “Hawkeye.”
The dress code for the event was “Marvel holiday chic” and guests were certainly feeling festive, with fans rocking a mix of Christmas sweaters and Santa hats as well as Hawkeye and Kate Bishop costumes and bows and arrows.
The fabulously festive red carpet event was a warm welcome for Steinfeld, who joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old who idolizes Hawkeye (and is a pretty impressive archer herself), becoming his superhero trainee over the course of the six-episode series.
“It’s really a privilege to be able to play a character that could in any way possibly inspire anyone,” Steinfeld told Variety about embodying the beloved comic character.

On Disney+ Day, the studio dropped a lengthy piece of never-before-seen footage toward the end of its presentation with a look at its coming 2022 Marvel series — Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel — as well as a great chase scene from the upcoming series Hawkeye which debuts on November 24.
The clip, which is not available online, can only be seen on Disney+.
The streamer also made some news Friday in the Marvel universe, saying that that it has ordered animated series Marvel Zombies as well as comics-rooted X-Men ‘97 and Spider-Man: Freshman Year.
As for the new looks, there was a quick glimpse of Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight, a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him find themselves thrust into a deadly war of the gods against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt.

This evening an Avenger came to London and brought with him some new friends. Disney+’s Marvel offerings continue apace with Hawkeye, an original new series set in post-blip New York City where former Avenger Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas.
But when a threat from his past shows up, Hawkeye reluctantly teams up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a 22-year-old skilled archer and his biggest fan, to unravel a criminal conspiracy.
The series also features Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. Helmed by Rhys Thomas and directing duo Bert and Bertie, “Hawkeye” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on Nov. 24, 2021.

If there is one character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who deserves to be the center of their own series so we can learn more about them, it’s Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye. An original Avenger whose main skill is that he knows his way around a bow and arrow, Clint has been around since Phase One and yet we still know shockingly little about him outside of his close friendship with Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and that he has a secret family only a few people knew about prior to the events of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015).
Debuting Wednesday, Nov. 24 with two episodes on Disney+, the six-episode “Hawkeye” will attempt to fill in the gaps in Clint’s story the way this summer’s “Black Widow” gave Nat a complete backstory (and revealed what happened in Budapest). The show is the fourth live-action Marvel series to...

Nasim Pedrad’s “Chad” had its formal premiere on Tuesday to nearly 700,000 total viewers, according to TBS.
The comedy, which stars the “Saturday Night Live” alum as a 14-year-old boy, currently stands as the year’s top-rated scripted comedy series on cable, thanks to a sneak peek after the Syracuse-Houston NCAA game last month.
In total, the premiere episode was watched by 1.9 million viewers across the two airings, with 765,000 in the coveted 18-49 demographic.
“From the moment Nasim came to the first table read as Chad, I knew this series was bound for success,” Brett Weitz, general manager for TBS, TNT and truTV, said. “Nasim is a four-hyphen-superstar; as creator-writer-ep-actor, she Is Chad, and her work and this series reinforces our commitment to always deliver a good time and laugh-out-loud scripted comedy.”

Hawkeye is set to debut later this year with Jeremy Renner reprising his Avengers archer. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Hawkeye’s protege Kate Bishop. Vera Farmiga is her mom Eleanor, Florence Pugh reprises her Black Widow role of assassin Yelena Belova, Fra Fee plays villain clown Kazi, Tony Dalton is Hawkeye’s mentor Jack Duqesne and Zahn McClarnon is William Lopez, Echo’s dad.

Exclusive: The BBC is heading back to the Dickensian-era for its latest family comedy. The British public broadcaster has ordered Dodger from NBCUniversal International Studios.
The series is a family adventure comedy set in 1830s Dickensian London and tells the story of the Artful Dodger, the infamous pickpocket character from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
The character, whose name was Jack Dawkins, is the leader of a gang of child criminals, trained by Fagin. He was described by Dickens as a “snub-nosed, flat-bowed, common-faced boy” with the “airs and manners of a man”.
The Artful Dodger has been portrayed by a slew of child actors over the years, most recently by Wilson Radjou-Pujalte in BBC period drama Dickensian.
Dodger is written by Rhys Thomas, best known for his roles in comedies including The Fast Show, Sirens and Nathan Barley, who also co-wrote spoof music doc series The Life of Rock with Brian Pern.

Nasim Pedrad wanted to create a comedy with a Middle Eastern character that wasn’t “acting against Jack Bauer” in TBS’ Chad.
Saturday Night Live alumna Pedrad, who is starring as a 14-year-old pubescent Persian boy in the single-camera comedy, opened up the Chad panel at the Winter TCA press tour with a passionate response to a question about Iran.
Pedrad, who was born in Iran, said she didn’t think the comedic elements of the show would land any differently in light of the recent conflict between Iran and the U.S. “My heart is with the Iranian people,” she added. “I think the people of Iran are not dissimilar to us. They want freedom and peace. I’m so in awe of their resilience and strength as they continue to stand up against this regime and fight for basic human rights. I fully support them.”
She added that growing up in the U.
