Egyptian superstar Yousra over the course of a four-decade career has starred in a multitude of Arabic film and TV milestones comprising classic movies such as Youssef Chahine’s “Alexandria: Again and Forever” and Marwan Hamed’s “The Yacoubian Building,” and hit Ramadan series “Public Opinion Case,” which was instrumental in changing Egypt’s rape victim legislation.
But while Yousra has appeared in several co-productions, she recently had the first-time experience of working on the Mbc series “Rose & Layla” with a non-Arabic writer-director duo: British screenwriter Cris Cole, creator of the BAFTA-nominated series “Mad Dogs,” and Adrian Shergold, who directed “Mad Dogs.” “Rose & Layla,” which is produced by Maged Mohsen and Safa Aburizik, will be distributed internationally by veteran Brit exec Stewart Till’s Till Entertainment.

Exclusive: Seoul Street is adapting Suzanne Park’s bestselling novel Sunny Song Will Never Be Famous for the big screen.
The Sourcebooks Fire novel follows a Korean-American female social media influencer Sunny, who is shipped off to a digital detox summer camp. While her big summer goals are to make Rafael Kim her boyfriend, hit 100,000 followers and have the best last summer of high school, what’s not on her list is accidentally filming a PG-13 cooking video that goes viral (#browniegate). Extremely not on her list: being shipped off to a digital detox farm camp in Iowa for a whole month. She’s traded in her WiFi connection for a butter churn, and if she wants any shot at growing her social media platform this summer, she’ll need to find a way back online. However, as Sunny is forced to disconnect, she makes a connection with an alarmingly cute farm boy.

If you loved Amazon's Mad Dogs, then I've got some bad news for you ... maybe: those 10 episodes are all you're going to get. The show, which premiered last month, has been cancelled. But that's probably for the best. Executive producer Shawn Ryan made the announcement on Twitter yesterday, and followed it up with an explanation as to why. His take on it is that, though the show was one of Amazon's best-reviewed dramas and "some Amazon employees" told him it had "better streaming stats" than "many other" Amazon shows, he and creator Cris Cole couldn't come to an agreement with Amazon about the direction of the second season. And that's okay with Ryan and Cole, Ryan says, because they didn't want a second season anyway (and some critics *ahem* Hitfix's own Alan Sepinwall *ahem* didn't see how it could work as a multiple-season show in the first place). So perhaps...

Amazon's "Mad Dogs," the U.S. remake of the British dark comedy that ran for three series, has met the fate of many trans-Atlantic show remakes - cancelled after one season.
Ben Chaplin, Michael Imperioli, Romany Malco and Steve Zahn starred in the story of a longtime, forty-something group of friends who reunite in Belize at a crossroads in their lives.
Producer Shawn Ryan announced the news on social media today saying:
"A decision was made not to make any more episodes of Mad Dogs... we were lucky to be one the best reviewed dramas on Amazon, if not the best. A lot of critics got what we were going for, so thanks."
Ryan says the decision came down to a disagreement between Amazon Studios head Roy Price and the creative team about the direction for the second season following a meeting last week in which Ryan and co-creator Cris Cole...

On Friday, I posted my review of Amazon's "Mad Dogs," avoiding the spoilers even as I discussed my feelings based on the whole season. As promised — which may be especially handy for anyone who watched the whole season during the weekend blizzard — I have a few more specific, and spoiler-filled, thoughts on the first season, coming up just as soon as the ice cream's made from rosehip... * As discussed Friday, the inevitability of the guys screwing up every task — and/or for acts of God to happen on the rare occasions when the guys did what they were supposed to — created a sameness to some of the episodes when watched closely together, and I at least had about a week in between when I finished the sixth episode on a screener and when I watched the last four. I'm curious how others who marathoned the whole thing in shorter order felt.

(This post has no significant spoilers for "Mad Dogs," even though it's informed by a viewing of the entire first season. The comments section is a place where it's okay to discuss the full plot if you've finished it, but I'll be doing a separate post on Monday touching on a few developments from later in the season.) Late in the first episode of Amazon's newest original series "Mad Dogs," the show's four main characters — played by Romany Malco, Michael Imperioli, Steve Zahn, and Ben Chaplin — witness an act of violence. By the standards of modern TV drama, what they see isn't particularly extreme. But they're not watching it on TV, nor are they the sorts of jaded tough guys who populate the shows where this kind of thing might happen. They're just ordinary middle-aged guys on a vacation gone tragically awry, and as they consider the blood in front of them,...

Premiering this Friday, Amazon’s sunny, sinister and often outrageously funny new crime comedy Mad Dogs drops you in the middle of a never-ending “Choose Your Own Misadventure” story. By page 30, you’re lost in a foreign city, desperately looking for somewhere to stash your rental car. You can’t use your phone to help you because your idiot friend threw it away – he thought it was being tracked (it wasn’t…right?). If the car’s not safely hidden, someone might notice that it contains $5 million in stolen drug money, which you’re trying to return to a notorious crime lord before he kills you. Of course, he might just kill you anyway, because your other idiot friend (he’s dead now) left the gangster’s yacht somewhere in the Caribbean. It’s a long story.

The Us adaptation of Mad Dogs will be its own unique story, executive producer Shawn Ryan has claimed.
Ryan stated that although the Amazon Studios pilot shares similarities with the British original, the American series will deviate from the source material.
"The pilot, while having many similar story beats to the UK version, also has some significant differences and those differences will only grow bigger until episode five, when it will be a completely new story with only the occasional nod to the original," he told HitFix.
Ryan - who is working on the Us Mad Dogs with Cris Cole, the creator of the original UK show - also discussed how the Amazon project came about.
"[Sony] asked Cris and I if we would like to do an American version," he recalled. "Cris and I talked.

Amazon released its latest batch of pilots a couple of weeks ago, in the midst of press tour, so it took me a while to get to them, and I still haven’t had time to watch “Point of Honor.” But I saw all the other adult scripted series, and two clearly stood out as the ones I hope go to series: “The Man in the High Castle,” about a reality where the Axis powers won WWII, and “Mad Dogs,” about four middle-aged friends (played by Steve Zahn, Romany Malco, Michael Imperioli and Ben Chaplin) whose vacation to visit a fifth old pal (Billy Zane) goes terribly awry. The pilots will include hour-long shows Cocked, Mad Dogs, The Man in the High Castle, and Point of Honor, half-hour shows Down Dog and Salem Rogers, and the half-hour docu-series The New Yorker Presents. Now, Paxson returns with his liberal family to the dysfunctional family he left behind,...

Fans of ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” have one heck of a season ahead of them. Hayley Atwell (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) will reprise her role as Agent Peggy Carter in a guest-starring spot in the season premiere on September 23rd. An “Agent Carter” spinoff is also set to debut in early 2015 as well, so it's probably safe to say this will all tie together. As for 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' George Stephanopoulos, of all people, will also cameo in the opening episode as himself. Agent Stephanopoulos? We’ll find out in two weeks. [THR] Casting for the quartet of leads in Amazon’s “Mad Dogs’ is nearly complete. Ben Chaplin (“The Thin Red Line”), Romany Malco (“Think Like A Man”) and Steve Zahn (“Treme”) will play former frat buddies who travel to reunite with another college friend and run afoul of a dangerous drug lord. Steve Zahn, Romany Malco and Ben Chaplin are set to star as three of the four key characters in Shawn Ryan's adaptation of the British series "Mad Dogs" for Amazon.
The story follows four former frat brothers who travel to Belize for a reunion with their wealthy old college friend Milo only to have their luxury vacation interrupted by murder, conspiracy and a psychotic gang lord out for their hides.
Zahn plays a married financial adviser trying too hard to retain his youth. Malco plays a former attorney turned struggling antiques dealer in the midst of a divorce. Chaplin plays the oldest of the group, a teacher trainer estranged from his family suffering from depression.
Chaplin actually starred in the original but in a different role, that of the wealthy friend. That role in this version hasn't been cast. Philip Glenister, John Simm, Marc Warren and Max Beesley played...

The quartet subsequently realize that losing their virginity might provide the best route to survival." Shooting will take place in Scotland.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard much from Ed Speleers, who had the misfortune of his “big break” being fantasy flop Eragon. Since then, he’s notched up a few film roles, and will be seen in this week’s thriller A Lonely Place to Die alongside web chat subject Melissa George. But he’s also aboard a slightly less sensible movie, having nabbed a role in Andy de Emmony’s horror comedy Love Bite.Bite, which will also feature The Borgias’ Luke Pasqualino and Piranha’s Jessica Szohr, follows what happens when a small, dead-end town is thrown into chaos after a werewolf starts snacking on the residents. It would seem that the beast is targeting the local virgins (who, let’s face it, usually, get a bad run of things in horror movies) and four friends decide that if they’re going to survive, they...

Pelican Blood
Stars: Harry Treadaway, Emma Booth, Arthur Darvill, Emma Clifford | Written by Cris Cole | Directed by Karl Golden
A film about a couple who bond over bird watching may sound like a rather tame affair, possibly the kind of movie your grandma would enjoy on a Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea and a biscuit. Pelican Blood (named for reasons that become apparent at its conclusion), however, is a story as black as jet and is at times a difficult and troubling to watch. And while it is a good film, it is highly unlikely grandma is going to enjoy it.
Nikko (Treadaway) is a self-harming, suicidal, recently bereaved twenty-two year with an obsession with bird watching and is nearing five hundred sightings, or ‘ticks’ as he refers to them on his list. Sky’s newfound commitment to original drama continues with the sun-kissed thriller Mad Dogs, where four middle-aged friends — Woody (Max Beesley), Quinn (Philip Glenister), Baxter (John Simm) and Rick (Marc Warren) — fly out to Majorca to spend a week at their mutual pal Alvo’s (Ben Chaplin) luxurious villa, at his invitation, to get reacquainted and relive their youth. A simple setup for a ribald comedy-drama about midlife crisis, but Mad Dogs has more sinister and surreal things playing on its mind.
It perhaps reveals its hand too soon, in a prologue where each of the four friends were seen looking bloodied and bruised speaking into a camcorder, before the story jumped back in time to reveal how this situation comes about. But the buildup after that worked well, with escalating omens of trouble ahead (a beetle scooped from Alvo’s swimming pool, hours before a dead goat was found...

Brit-flick “Pelican Blood” is a film pretty obviously aiming for hip cult appeal, attempting to match the not exactly obvious combination of romance, angst, suicide and bird watching. Directed by Karl Golden (“The Honeymooners”, “Belonging to Laura”), the film was based upon the popular novel by Cris Freddi, with a script from Cris Cole (“Mad Dogs”, “The Good Times Are Killing Me”). Featuring a cast of up and coming British talent including Harry Treadaway (“Fish Tank”), Emma Booth (“The Boys Are Back”), Arthur Darvill (“ Robin Hood”) and Christopher Fulford (“Whitechapel”), the indie production also boasts a perky soundtrack that includes The Coral, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Crystal Castles, The Do, Little Hell and The Specials. The film lands soon on region 2 DVD via Icon Home Entertainment in a standard bare bones edition. Treadaway takes the lead as Nikko, a fairly unbalanced young man trying, and pretty much failing, to...
