Why do we love kaiju movies so much? Is it the sight of an enormous creature stomping its way through a metropolis, tapping into our secret desires to see them leveled? Or the representation of nature’s wrath against humanity for its mistreatment of the planet?...

You didn't have to be a horror aficionado to appreciate the enormity of "Freddy vs. Jason" in 2003. This was two of the titans of the slasher genre finally going head-to-head in a bloody free-for-all. Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees had slashed, stabbed, and otherwise punctured our collective pop cultural consciousness for years by then. As a young kid who had yet to see any of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Friday the 13th" films, even I knew exactly what was being referenced the first time I saw the scene in "Christmas Vacation" where Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) dons a hockey mask while taking a chainsaw to his gigantic Christmas tree.
Crossover films of this ilk have largely gone the way of the dodo since "Freddy vs. Jason" came out. We're now 80 years removed from Frankenstein's monster meeting the Wolf Man for the first time in Universal's Og Dark Universe,...

If there's one thing we can take away from modern blockbusters it's that, with rare exceptions, special effects just don't feel "special" anymore.
That's not to say that there aren't beautiful and convincing visual effects being produced in the world of cinema. "Top Gun: Maverick" seamlessly blends real aerial footage with CG recreations, to the extent that it's nearly impossible to tell what was really in front of the camera. "Avatar: The Way of Water," whatever its other flaws may be, is a sumptuous spectacle for the eyes, at once vibrant and colorful and creative.
But what so very many modern visual effects films have in common is that they take imagery that should be astounding for granted, treating the most incredible and impossible things the human mind could devise, and acting like it's just something everyone deals with every day. And the new superhero film "Shazam! Fury of the Gods...

As a string of serious dramas underperform at the box office, silliness has instead taken over Hollywood from M3gan to Cocaine Bear
It wasn’t the big-budget bullishness of Christopher Nolan that lured understandably wary audiences back to the multiplex after Covid struck. The director tried harder than most to be Hollywood’s head cheerleader for the cinema experience, insisting his sleek thriller Tenet be seen on the big screen and the big screen only back in the cursed days of 2020, but it was too much and too soon, and ultimately his film was too bad for it to work too well.
The film was by no means a flop, but it was a concerning under-performer, caveats and all, and it wasn’t until the following March that we found out what it took to truly lead the masses from their couch. Rather than style or sophistication, as Nolan had offered,...

Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) screenwriter Jimmy Warden has said that he has ideas for multiple sequels to the film, and some movie-goers have already let it be known that they’re hoping and waiting for a movie that would be called Cocaine Shark. But while we wait to see if Cocaine Bear is going to spawn a franchise, the mockbuster masters at The Asylum have unveiled a poster of the mockbuster they have made to cash in on the Cocaine Bear hype: a movie called Attack of the Meth Gator! An exact release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect to see Attack of the Meth Gator sometime this summer.
We can only assume that Attack of the Meth Gator is going to be about an alligator going on a killing spree after consuming meth, much like Cocaine Bear is about a bear going on a killing spree after consuming cocaine.

Godzilla feature films can be separated into six separate, distinct continuities. From Toho's 1954 original "Gojira" until "Terror of Mechagodzilla" in 1975, there were 16 films in the "Showa" era. Beginning in 1984 with "The Return of Godzilla" and running until "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995, was the "Heisei" era. Roland Emmerich's 1998 American film was, after the fact, folded into a new rebooted continuity which began in 2000 with "Godzilla 2000." That was the "Millennium" era. That era ran until 2004 and closed out with "Godzilla: Final Wars," a film where Godzilla fights just about every monster imaginable. In 2014, America took a crack at kaiju films again with a new "Godzilla," now part of a multi-film "MonsterVerse" era. Perhaps in response, Japan made "Shin Godzilla" in 2016, the only film to date in the "Shin" era. Shortly after "Shin Godzilla," there was also a trilogy of animated films on Netflix. Call those films the "Netflix" era.

In 2005, Hollywood did the unthinkable—it launched a remake of the 1933 cinematic masterpiece, King Kong. This was not the first attempt to do so, although if anything the previous attempts were cautionary tales about why you should never attempt to remake King Kong.
The first, in 1976, replaced the original’s groundbreaking stop-motion effects with a guy in a gorilla suit and a hugely expensive, life-sized mechanical gorilla that provided a total of 15 seconds of usable footage. The second was an attempt in the late ‘90s to remake the film with an up-and-coming indie horror director better known for what the press at the time called “video nasties” than big, family-friendly blockbusters. However, with a Godzilla remake in the works, alongside the rival big gorilla movie remake of Mighty Joe Young, the project was canned and the director moved on to adapt a series of fantasy novels.

Seth Rogen took the opportunity to roast The CW Network during the Critics Choice Awards – which was broadcast on The CW.
The Critics Choice Awards took place on Sunday night (15 January) at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by Chelsea Handler and broadcast on US network The CW.
Rogen, 40, presented the award for Best Comedy Series, which went to Abbott Elementary.
Noting that the Best Supporting Actor/Actress award had been combined, the Knocked Up star joked: “That was weird. Why do they do that? Are we crunched for time? Get another hour! It can’t be that expensive.
“You know how I know that? This show airs at 4pm on The CW. That cannot be a pricey timeslot, from my understanding of how this all works.”
Continuing to mock the award’s host network, Rogen said: “I’m not saying The CW is bad.

The culmination of the first wave of MonsterVerse films, "Godzilla vs. Kong" delivered on the title's premise and then some. In addition to having Godzilla slap Kong around (and vice-versa), the film expanded the kaiju-filled world by introducing the Hollow Earth. Indeed, the center of our planet was revealed to be a lush environment that literally flipped the world on its head, laying out an expansive origin story for Kong and his fiercest competitor along the way. Just don't compare it to Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
A sequel is well on its way, but "Godzilla vs. Kong" already did the heavy lifting when it comes to laying the foundation of its monster-ridden universe. The Hollow Earth once housed the large creatures that now terrorize the surface land, including Kong's deceased relatives. The giant ape's return to his homeland is a turning point in the story,...

Hong Kong’s box office managed to stage a partial recovery in the second half of 2022, despite cinemas being closed for nearly four months earlier in the year, due to US titles including Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way Of Water and a strong line-up of local movies.
Total box office for 2022 came in at HK1.14bn (US146.41m), according to figures from Hong Kong Box Office Limited, which was only 5 down on 2021. However, these figures were more than 40 down on the 2019 pre-pandemic box office tally of HK1.92bn (US246.17), prompting Hong Kong Box Office to state that “the situation of the film industry is still very severe”.
Hong Kong cinemas were closed from January 7 to April 20 in 2022, wiping out the lucrative Chinese New Year and Easter periods, compared to a shutdown of 48 days in 2021. When cinemas finally reopened last year, they were subject to a 50 seating capacity for one month,...

A succession of locally-made hit films released in the second half of the year helped the cinema box office in Hong Kong to stage a remarkable comeback in 2022.
Aggregate box office for the year was HK1.14 billion (147 million), some 40 lower than pre-pandemic 2019, according to new data from Hong Kong Box Office Limited. In its annual assessment, the organization echoed its earlier alarm and described the situation in 2022 as “very severe.”
The full year total was only 5 lower than in 2021 and was achieved despite cinemas being closed for 104 days on government orders in 2022, following local authorities’ attempt to limit the spread of Covid.
Closures meant that Hong Kong cinemas were dark during the 2022 Chinese New Year and Easter peak periods.
And even after cinemas were allowed to reopen in late April 2022, the government continued to intervene in the sector, maintaining seating limits on cinemas for almost all of the year. Theaters...

Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie is making headlines for reasons other than Chris Pratt’s distracting portrayal of arguably the most iconic character in video games. According to a new promotion from McDonald’s, an upcoming Happy Meal toy line includes a surprise character not featured in trailers for the film. At least not yet. The character’s name is Lumalee, a cyan-colored Luma who appears in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Lumalees act as shops in the Mario Bros. universe, selling Life Mushrooms and 1-Up Mushrooms. Players can interact with various Lumas throughout Mario’s universe-spanning adventure.

Over the course of 144 minutes, Philip Yung’s true-crime drama Where the Wind Blows covers an awful lot of ground. An epic in the style Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in New York, it pairs Asian superstars Tony Leung and Aaron Kwok in a story spanning several decades of police corruption in Hong Kong during its time as a British colony. The detail is sometimes dense, but the tone turns playful and refreshingly light at times, and there’s even a memorable musical routine for “The God of Dance” Kwok.
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders International award-season event Saturday, Yung explained his reasons for wanting to make the film. “Hong Kong ended its colonial era in 1997, so it’s been 25 years,” he said. “Many changes have happened since then, and many people who lived during that time have gotten old or passed away. Guillermo del Toro spent decades dreaming up his stop-motion version of “Pinocchio.” Now that he’s finally made his animated debut, he has no plans to slow down. Unlike many auteur passion projects given the greenlight by Netflix, this one could open the floodgates for a director keen on making up for lost time.
Over 30 years ago, del Toro was a young makeup and special effects artist in Guadalajara, Mexico, preparing to direct his first feature. The project was a wild, stop-motion animated sci-fi story called “Omnivore,” and the premise read like a rough audition for the revisionist genre epics he would make years later. He was inspired by Mexican stop-motion sculptor Marcel Delgado, whose credits include “King Kong,” to make a very different kind of monster movie.
“It was a very late teens, early 20s, underground comix type of story,” the 58-year-old filmmaker recalled in a recent interview with IndieWire.

Nintendo and Universal Pictures has finally delivered the big trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and this time it’s more than just two scenes and a stinger. We finally have something else to talk about besides Chris Pratt’s questionable Mario voice acting!
Now we get to see Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, some kart-driving action, and Luigi doing more than just screaming for his life. We definitely have a better look at what this movie has to offer and with this broader scope comes plenty of easter Eggs.
Mario has been in so many games, and crossed so many genres, that there’s plenty of source material for Illumination to pull from. Even through there are still a few big names from Mario lore that are likely being saved for the sequel, The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to all the background details and cameos.

Lets-a-go! Nintendo has released a new trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie which offers us much more of Chris Pratt’s Mario than the first one. The new trailer also introduces us to Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, and more, and there are also plenty of references to many of the Super Mario video-games, including Mario Kart. All in all, it looks like a lot of fun.
The Super Mario Bros Movie features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Micahel Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Anne Hathaway had to ignore her first instinct to run away from the psychological terror of filming “Mother’s Instinct.”
The Oscar winner revealed that she had to tackle her “worst fear” alongside Jessica Chastain for upcoming thriller “Mother’s Instinct,” directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse. “Mother’s Instinct” is a remake of Belgium helmer Masset-Depasse’s 2017 film “Duelles,” based on the novel “Derrière la Haine” by novelist Barbara Abel.
The official synopsis reads: Set in the 1960s, “Mothers’ Instinct” centers on best friends and neighbors Alice (Chastain) and Celine (Hathaway), who live in a suburban paradise. Both are mothers to two sons of the same age, and their idyllic domestic happiness is shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion, and paranoia bleed into their friendship as a psychological battle of wills gives way to a darker side of the maternal instinct.

The V/H/S franchise is the premiere horror anthology of its generation. Since the original’s debut in 2012, the movie spawned five sequels, one spinoff, and a Snapchat miniseries. V/H/S 99 is the latest of those sequels to arrive from Shudder, with another expected to arrive next year. The anthology followed a found footage theme before it began incorporating specific years into the mix in 2021. Doing so injected new life, as well as new horror directors, into the franchise. “I feel like V/H/S stakes a claim and really kicks off horror filmmakers in a special way,” says V/H/S 99 director and series newcomer Maggie Levin. A new animated adventure from the co-director of "Big Hero 6" and "Moana" is set to arrive on Netflix this July in the form of "The Sea Beast." The sea-faring flick is anchored (see what I did there?) by the voice talent of Dan Stevens, Karl Urban, Jared Harris, and Zaris-Angel Hator as Maisie Brumble, the film's protagonist. The trailer for the movie promised plenty of action on the high seas, run-ins with fearsome sea monsters, and a kid-friendly premise involving young Maisie stowing away on a ship and experiencing the adventure of a lifetime.

Julian Dennison (Godzilla vs Kong), Minnie Driver, James Rolleston (The Dark Horse) and Erana James are set to star in New Zealand coming-of-age tale One Winter from directors Paul Middleditch and Hamish Bennett.
The title is based on a story by Middleditch, Keith Aberdein and Sonia Whiteman, with Bennett and Whiteman adapting the screenplay. Story is set in New Zealand in 1981 when the arrival of the South African rugby team sets off nationwide protests against apartheid and racism. Josh Waaka (Dennison), a 17-year-old boy of mixed race who has been a passive bystander all of his life, is suddenly forced to stand up for himself, his family and his future.
The film, which is set to begin shooting this summer in New Zealand, is produced by Emma Slade, Sandra Kailahi, Angela Cudd, Angela Sullivan and Alberto Marzan. Troy Lum is an exec producer. Blue Fox is launching international sales here in Cannes this week.

As previously revealed, in-demand French star Pierre Niney (Frantz) will lead cast on the buzzy French-language comedy The Book of Solutions (Le Livre Des Solutions). Plot details are being kept under wraps on the hot project, but we hear it will be about a filmmaker trying to overcome creative demons.
We also understand supporting cast will include Blanche Gardin, Camille Rutherford, Frankie Wallach and Vincent Elbaz. Producer is Georges Berman.

The sequel to last year’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” is about to go into production and it has now found its human lead: Dan Stevens, from “Downton Abbey” and Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” remake, according to an insider with knowledge of the project. The “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel will reunite the actor with Adam Wingard, who directed Stevens in the devilish 2014 thriller “The Guest,” which become something of a cult classic in the years since its release.
Details for the “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel are scarce, although it will assuredly bring back both Kong, who at the end of last year’s movie assumed his rightful place as King of Hollow Earth; and Godzilla, who slunk back into the ocean ready to destroy peaceful cities or save the planet (whatever comes up first). Together, Godzilla and Kong defeated the evil Mechagodzilla.

Okay, you know what? I take it back. Maybe April Fool's Day isn't as bad as I've always thought it was. It's still a lowest common denominator "holiday" that only people with the absolute worst senses of humor get a kick out of, mind you, but at least it apparently has its advantages.
Before director Adam Wingard smashed Godzilla and King Kong together like two action figures in the aptly-titled "Godzilla vs. Kong," or directed the one-two punch of the "Blair Witch" sequel and "Death Note," he directed the 2014 thriller "The Guest." Warner Bros' Monsterverse seems to be doing pretty well for itself, having just greenlit two television shows for Apple, and a sequel to "Godzilla vs. Kong" after its box office success. People love seeing giant monsters do their thing. While Gareth Edwards' melancholic "Godzilla" is still my favorite of the four film franchise, I've slightly come around a bit on director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' "Kong: Skull Island." It's a flawed creature feature whose gnarly special effects are more alive than its human characters, and it doesn't exactly make its titular monster much of a compelling character, but Vogt-Roberts ("The Kings of Summer") provides enough...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. The Last Winter (2006).What I am suggesting is that the imagery of disaster…is above all the emblem of an inadequate response. I do not mean to bear down on the films for this. Yes, it’s true (and we still can’t believe we wrote that headline above): Ambulance, the new action thriller from none other than director Michael Bay, might just be the divisive filmmaker’s best effort in this century.
After spending a decade in the cinematic hell that was his Transformers series, where he churned out one unwatchable, incoherent, headache-inducing pile of crap after another—with a couple of breaks for the modestly better Pain and Gain in 2013, the politically dumbed-down 13 Hours in 2016, and the tediously awful 6 Underground in 2019—Bay has produced his most consistently enjoyable movie since 1996’s The Rock.
Now, make no mistake, this is still a Michael Bay movie; a lot of the action is still edited as if he threw the footage in a blender and put it on high, and the pile-up of plot turns and over-the-top acting in the third act...

Banijay Buys Italy’s Groenlandia Group, Maker of ‘Romulus’ and ‘The Incredible Story of Rose Island’
Banijay has acquired control of Italy’s expanding Groenlandia Group, which is a producer on ITV’s “Romulus” skein and made recent Netflix Italian original film “The Incredible Story of Rose Island,” among other titles.
The Rome-based company, headed by directors and producers Matteo Rovere and Sydney Sibilia, has been steadily growing since its founding in 2014. Besides “Romulus” — both the film and the TV series which Rovere directed, and “Rose Island,” helmed by Sibilia, Groenlandia’s recent output also includes Leonardo D’Agostini’s widely exported soccer comedy drama “The Champion,” starring Stefano Accorsi, and Ludovico De Martino’s actioner “The Beast,” co-produced with Warner Bros. and now streaming globally on Netflix.
Groenlandia also comprises Ascent Films, founded and managed by Andrea Paris, who will keep operating in the shingle, in which it has had a majority stake since 2014. Ascent is an incubator shingle focused on identifying and establishing new talent.

Ever since Godzilla vs. Kong hit the screens back in March 2021, fans of the epic MonsterVerse movies from Legendary Pictures have been eagerly awaiting news of what comes next. Studio executives have also teased plenty of options, given that the latest installment of the franchise was a huge commercial success, which makes it inevitable that plans for the future are already on the drawing board.
Legendary got the ball rolling when they launched the Godzilla reboot in 2014, introducing us to an alternate Earth timeline, featuring Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs), along with the Monarch organization investigating their existence. The huge success of Spider-Man: No Way Home was an anomaly in an otherwise disappointing season and with release dates shifting, 2022 could bring more woe
Movies are back! Or so we thought back in 2021 when, after a year of shuttered cinemas, it seemed like a dormant industry was hurtling back to life. Last spring, Godzilla vs Kong led the charge, the first genuine hit of the pandemic, and soon A Quiet Place Part II, F9, Black Widow and Free Guy followed, many of them making less than initial expectations but still more than enough to encourage studios that, despite previous fears, the cinema was not going the way of the video store.
The year closed out with the biggest hit of them all, Spider-Man: No Way Home, a record-breaker regardless of release date, already up to over $1.3bn globally in less than a month and likely to be one of...
