- TriviaShari Lewis explained her goal for the audience is "participation, not passive observance". She said: "our goal is, don't just sit there - come play with me". She wanted to "attack the shorter attention span of today's children with a fast-paced show using colorful electronic effects". She said in an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer: "I know that when children watch TV, they go into a stupor. Parents think (their children) are interested, but what they really are is bored". Lewis testified that making smart content for children was not that hard to produce and should be done with increasing frequency. She explained that if children are challenged, they will be productive members of society. She said, "I don't care if you tack a prosocial message at the end of the show. You have not done a quality show".
- Quotes
Shari Lewis: Did you ever wish upon a star?
Lamb Chop: I once asked Mr. Rogers for his autograph.
- Crazy creditsDuring the credits, the puppets and children would sing several verses of "The Song That Doesn't End" while hostess Shari Lewis would try in vain to stop them. They would eventually leave (on her urging), even while beginning a sixth verse (which eventually fades away). Then the puppet character Charlie Horse would return and try to get to sing the song again. But Shari, however, stops him successfully. She puts her hand over his mouth (keeping him from singing it again, before he tries to get to sing it) and orders him to "go away". Charlie Horse does leave but slams the door before Shari could tell him to not slam it. After the door is slammed, she faces the audience with an exasperated expression and says "door", but at least is now in peace and quiet with Charlie, Lamb Chop, and the group gone.

I know it's only natural for someone to say that modern shows aren't as good as the shows he/she grew up with. It's the nostalgia factor that keeps our childhood shows sacred in our hearts. But nostalgia aside, Lamb Chop's Play-Along was still awesome. Shari Lewis and her personality-packed puppet gang were head-and-shoulders above their contemporaries like Mr. Rogers and Barney, because they went places and did things that other shows never thought to.
While most other shows were (and still are) pounding things like spelling and counting into children's brains, Shari taught her viewers magic tricks, riddles, Mother Goose parodies, drawing, boredom-busters and more. Today, the average five-year-old is wiggling around with the Teletubbies. When I was five, I was making jumping origami rabbits out of business cards. Somebody really needs to put this show back on the air. It's hard to stomach the idea that a generation will grow up without Shari, Lamb Chop, Charlie Horse and Hush Puppy.
Oh, yeah, and they also taught kids how to annoy the heck out of their parents: "This is the song that doesn't end, yes it goes on and on my friend....." ;)
