Michelle Obama has earned her second Grammy Award, now matching husband Barack Obama.
Michelle Obama won best audiobook, narration and storytelling for The Light We Carry: Overcoming In Uncertain Times on Sunday, beating out Meryl Streep, Senator Bernie Sanders, William Shatner and Rick Rubin. The win occurred during the 2024 Grammys pre-show, where most of the awards are handed out. Michelle Obama wasn’t in attendance.
The former first lady won her first Grammy in the same category for her memoir Becoming. Barack Obama won his Grammys for best spoken word album with Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.
Last year, both Obamas earned Emmy nominations: Michelle Obama received her first Emmy nomination alongside Oprah Winfrey for the best hosted nonfiction series or special for The Light We Carry: Overcoming In Uncertain Times, while the former U.S. President received his second...

For the most part, I agree with the combined Golden Globes predictions from Gold Derby’s Experts, Editors and Users in film and television. I mean, how can anyone bet against such heavy favorites as Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”)? However, on several occasions I’m going rogue and ignoring the consensus of my fellow awards pundits. Below, see my four “no guts, no glory” predictions for performers that I believe will walk up to the podium on Sunday, January 7 despite not being #1 in our racetrack odds.
Beware: copy these picks at your own risk, as they could win (or lose) your office pool. For my complete Golden Globes predictions in all categories, click here for film and click here for television.

Kelly Clarkson brought real Halloween spirit to “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Tuesday when she performed a rendition of singer Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” … while dressed as a vampire.
In the latest segment of the talk show’s “Kellyoke,” Clarkson belted out Rodrigo’s track from her 2023 album “Guts.”
“I used to think I was smart, but you made me look so naive,” The three-time Grammy award-winner sang. “The way you sold me for parts, as you sunk your teeth into me. Oh, blood sucker, dream crasher, bleedin’ me dry like a damn vampire.” Which are of course the song’s lyrics but they have particularly more specificity today.
While on stage, Clarkson was decked out in a black, long-sleeve Morticia-like dress, wearing black-painted nails, black-lined and red-covered lips, with fake blood drops falling from her eyes. Even her live pianist matched her swag with makeup that created a sunken...

Olivia Rodrigo has unveiled “Vampire,” the eagerly awaited lead single from her second studio album, Guts. Co-written and produced by Dan Nigro, who was at the helm of the singer’s 2021 debut, Sour, the song splits the difference between the dreamy pathos of Rodrigo’s breakout hit, “Drivers License,” and the more angsty, rock-oriented tracks of her first album.
Rodrigo’s affinity for pop music’s past is evident throughout “Vampire.” There’s an almost Beatles-esque thread that runs from the song’s pensive piano-driven intro to its symphonic rock climax. Lyrically, it traces “six months of torture,” as Rodrigo skewers her former lover for gaslighting her. At times the track’s central metaphor feels a little on the nose—“You sunk your teeth into me/Oh, bloodsucker, fame fucker”—but when the latter epithet is replaced with “dream crusher” on the clean version, it actually has more bite.

Mumbai, Feb 25 (Ians) The issues and problems affecting women in sports in the country came up for discussion with Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat focussing on sexual harassment faced by women sportspersons and badminton star Jwala Gutta pointing at the lack of a proper attitude towards female athletes.
Former sprinter and Olympian Ashwini Nachappa pointed at the need for change in the mindset of administrators and in the governance of sports.
All these issues were raised during the ‘Fight like a Woman – Guts, Grit and Glory’ session during the second edition of Abp’s ‘Ideas of India’ summit here.
Speaking on the occasion, Arjuna Awardee and Commonwealth gold winner, Vineesh Phogat opened up about her own struggles of sexual misconduct that goes unnoticed in the field of sports.

"Army of Darkness" turns 30 this week and enjoys a well-earned reputation as a horror-comedy classic. Indeed, the influence of Sam Raimi's filmmaking stretches beyond the Pacific Ocean. Kentaro Miura, the late, legendary manga artist responsible for "Berserk," named Raimi and Tim Burton as his favorite filmmakers. In an interview (transcribed into English), Miura praised these directors as "offbeat," noting, "it's strange that a person can be that offbeat and big at the same time."
Miura would know; "Berserk" is one of the bleakest, most violent stories you'll ever read. Some of its splash pages are less action spreads and more ethereal tableaus. However, it's often cited as the crown jewel of fantasy manga. He and Raimi were so alike, in fact, that Miura started to get concerns about copyright. He recounted:
"Back then [the late 1980s] I was still in college, it was the day I finished the first episode of 'Berserk,...

2023 marks another year where the Academy Awards have shuttered horror from the competition, but genre fans know better than to expect anything less. Although there have always been exceptions in the past, such as "The Exorcist," "The Fly," and "Get Out," the Oscars' track record speaks for itself. But the truth is that horror folks don't really need the attention of the prestigious awards body when they have a better outlet to see their favorites receive some industry recognition.
If you're a horror nerd, then the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards is where you want to be paying attention. Although the famed magazine started this back in the '90s, it's only been in the past few years that they've started making it a yearly tradition. On top of that, the one-hour ceremony, which usually airs on Shudder, is curated for horror folks by horror folks. Where else are you going to...

With even most features struggling to get the big screen limelight they so often deserve these days, it’s harder still to get shorts played big and loud. Once again FrightFest delivers though, with another three feature-length showcases of short-form goodness, giving a platform to some of the most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers on the planet.
Here’s this writer’s stand-outs, from another densely packed year:
Kicking things off with Chris McInroy’s tonally perfect, and utterly disgusting workplace splatter comedy Guts; a bold and terrifically performed sketch about what it means to have guts (in every sense of the word) that milks a single joke for all it’s worth beautifully.
The same can be said for smartly devised and shot black comedy Cruise, from director Sam Rudykoff, a tight one room concept that builds wonderfully to a laugh-out-loud kicker of a punchline.

Astrid and Lilly faced off against the final monster: The Guardian.
The final battle commenced, but not before an emotional goodbye rocked the girls' grasp on the truth in Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10.
Astrid and Lilly got hit with a big slap of betrayal with the Guardian on his way to destroy everything.
In Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 2, we theorized that Brutus was hiding much of the truth from the girls.
Shortly after that, we dumped that theory because we saw how his relationship evolved with the duo to something akin to family.
Sadly, our original theories were correct: Brutus was hiding something this whole time.
Brutus admitted to stretching the truth with everything while acknowledging that he provided them with the wrong orb.
This betrayal is devasting for the girls and us!

While every gamer who grew up with a Snes will waste no time telling you about those nights spent with Zelda, Mario, and all of the console’s other all-time great games, every gamer knows that the true Snes experience involved suffering through some of the absolute worst games ever made.
The Snes wasn’t the last home of truly bad games (not by a long shot), but it was the centerpiece of a particularly…special era for terrible games. Developers were not only still trying to push barely playable (if that) games on unsuspecting consumers but some were bold enough to try to make technically ambitious games that even the best studios in the world couldn’t have pulled off. The result is some of the biggest swings and misses you’ll ever see.
These aren’t the Snes games you’ll remember most fondly, but I hope that...

Another documentary, Kier-La Janisse’s doc, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror got a runner-up nod, along with Japanese sci-fi comedy Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes. Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of Sammo Hung’s groundbreaking Hong Kong hit wherein comedy, horror and martial arts elements are brought together in a wholly successful way. This show has it all: kung fu action, duelling mystics, hopping vampires, hungry zombies, haunted mirrors and a sympathetic everyman whose danger-fraught narrative trajectory is littered with moments that are genuinely funny. Excellent production values complete this near perfect picture.

We’ve been suffering from a Twd drought for the past few months, thanks to the pandemic holding up production and post-production on the three TV series in the franchise. We’re almost out of the woods, though, as all three will return to our screens this October. Ahead of that, then, AMC is preparing to reintroduce fans to the post-apocalyptic universe by hosting The Walking Dead Season 1: Beginnings marathon this Sunday.
As the title spells out, the Beginnings programming block means the network will be rerunning all six episodes of the hit zombie drama’s first season, which originally aired a whole decade ago in late 2010. The marathon kicks off on AMC at 6/5c on Sunday, August 30th and “Days Gone Bye,” “Guts,” “Tell It to the Frogs,” “Vatos,” “Wildfire” and “Ts-19” will air back to back through to 12:51 am.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 10
Intentionally or not, “210 Words Per Minute” raises a very interesting question about mortality. In the zombie apocalypse, does a terminal illness carry the same weight it once did if death is always just around the corner? Unfortunately, Fear the Walking Dead doesn’t do much with this intriguing premise, not that it’s honor-bound to do so. I just wish these sorts of thought experiments held more intrigue for the show’s writers. Sure, devising more novel ways to kill walkers is entertaining enough—this is a zombie show, after all. But our main cast is so expert at dispatching the undead that the danger never generates enough suspense to truly keep viewers...

Some people might have forgotten that Mike O’Malley, who played Kurt Hummel’s dad and made you cry with his fatherly talks during six seasons of Glee, used to be a Nickelodeon game show host.
“I took the job very seriously,” O’Malley tells Et about hosting the ‘90s sports competition series Guts, now celebrating its 25th anniversary. O’Malley, 50, was 24 years old when he landed the job. “I looked at the part like I was playing the role of an older brother. Like a cool camp counselor. I loved working with the kids.”
Each episode filmed on Stage 21 at Universal Studios Florida featured three teenage athletes competing against each other in four "extreme" versions of athletic events.
In the final round, they raced up a “mountain” called the Aggro Crag, later renamed to Mega Crag. The show aired on Nickelodeon during a tween programming block that also included Legends of the Hidden Temple and Nick...

Do-do-do-do you have it?!
Twenty-five years ago today, ‘90s kids discovered something they didn’t know they needed: a piece of the Aggro Crag.
Alas, no one could simply circle it in the Toys ‘R’ Us holiday catalog. If you really wanted a piece of the mountain, later called the Mega Crag in season three, you had to don the blue, purple, or red uniform as a competitor on Nickelodeon Guts.
Flashback: Revisit Your Favorite Pop Culture Moments With Et
Amongst the tween programming block that also included Legends of the Hidden Temple and Nick Arcade, the series has come to represent an era of a specific genre of TV that has yet to be successfully replicated. An action competition show, young players were given the chance to perform in a literal sports fantasy, provided they didn’t mind doing it on national television. Today, nostalgia for the series is alive and well within its original demographic...

For those of us of a certain generation, tonight's new episode of Sanjay and Craig is going to hit us right in the nostalgia sweet spot. The Nickelodeon animated series is taking it back to the 90s with a Nickelodeon Guts-themed episode, featuring the voice talents of none other than former host Mike O'Malley and his referee sidekick Moira Quirk playing themselves. And wait until you get a look at the animated Aggro Crag. Who among us didn't want to take home a piece of the Crag for ourselves when we were kids? Who?! In the episode, Sanjay (voiced by Maulik Pancholy) and his anthropomorphic pet snake pal Craig (Chris Hardwick) run into Mike and find themselves convinced to compete in a revived road-show...

When I think comedy and the Miami Heat’s big three, I’m generally looking at Chris Bosh interview-bombing Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, but James has bigger aspirations than fooling around between quarters. I mean, naturally. He’s the King. James, in association with Mike O’Malley, Tom Werner, Maverick Carter, and Paul Wachter, now have a six episode series order by Starz for their basketball-centric half-hour scripted television project, Survivor’s Guilt. To be written and executive-produced by O’Malley, the show will focus on young basketball prodigy Cam Calloway, who moves to Georgia with his cousin Reggie Vaughn after signing a multi-million dollar contract to play for their pro basketball franchise. They contend with his sudden fame and fortune, family hangers-on, and Cam’s struggles to hold on to the community from which he came. Many will recognize O’Malley for his role as Burt Hummel, father of Chris Colfer’s Kurt on Glee...

Justified continued its strong fourth season with the help of some of its friends in "Kin."
Whether it was those we knew, a la Agent Barkley and Constable Bob, or fresh faces like Mike O'Malley and Gerald McRaney, the onslaught of guest stars was a welcome treat as the search from Drew Thompson continued.
Also back in attendance was Natalie Zea as a very pregnant Winona. While I am enjoying her presence much more on The Following, this return put the biggest smile on my face.
It wasn't anything Zea did, but rather seeing Raylan being there for Winona and the baby, and then getting a kick out of feeling kicks, couldn't have made me happier.
And then all the happy times stopped... quickly.
With Arlo ready to give up Drew Thompson for a deal that would let him walk, everything went into hyper speed as Raylan had about 24 hours...

15. Jeff Goldblum
Goldblum once said "fantastic" 72 times in 9 minutes as a guest on Jimmy Fallon. Saw it with my own two eyes.
14. Kristen Stewart
Just kidding.
13. Kristi Yamaguchi, Former Ice Skating Legend
Nobody has any reason to hate The Gooch. Just wanted to see what she was up to. Miss ya Gooch.
12. Jyoti Amge, Worlds Shortest Woman
18 years old. 2 feet tall. I love her. I love you, Jyoti.
11. Ellen
Actually watched an episode of Ellen the other day. Funny dude.
10. Wilson, Home Improvement
How's that for a statement. We like a guy whose face you can't even see, more than Dwight.
9. Ben Curtis, "Dude, you're getting a Dell" guy
Curtis was arrested for buying weed on the Lower East Side, and no I didn't find out from Snapple.
8. Paul Reubens, Pee Wee Herman
Pee Wee was arrested for wacking it in a movie theater. Yup. Still better than Dwight.
7. Peter Greene,...

Hello, Idoldome. Hello, John. This is the third season of American Idol that I’ve covered in person, and by now the Idoldome — EW’s nickname for the Idol studio at L.A.’s CBS Television City — is sort of like a second home to me. Except my second home has gone and remodeled itself. The most noticeable difference between last year’s set and Idoldome 2012 is the size of the audience, which has been cut roughly in half. As a result, the noise level has been reduced from “airplane taking off” to “Gilbert Gottfried.”

When I found out I’d be writing about Guts for our ongoing 90′s retrospectives series, the first question I asked my peers was “Would you have rather been on Guts or Legends of the Hidden Temple?” While there was still a fondness for Nickelodeon’s other sporting competition series, not to mention the ongoing heated debates about which team was best (It was the Purple Parrots, duh!), the answer was still, almost unanimously: Guts!
The reasoning behind this is quite simple, really. For as much fun as Legends looked, it was a game based solely on chance, rather than skill.

Some photographs are just so wonderfully, inexplicably eye-confusing, providing them with any context is distracting and unnecessary. This photo of Mad Men’s John Slattery and Nickelodeon Guts host Mike O’Malley hanging at Fenway Park with the Red Sox’s David Ortiz is one of those photos: O’Malley is currently on Glee and has appeared in commercials as a Boston sports fan before, so his presence isn’t totally esoteric, but my brain is incapable of processing him as anything other than the host of Guts. I assume right after this photo, he proceeded to shoutingly describe an instant replay of Jason “The Ninja” Goldberg missing a crucial actuator on the Aggro-Crag, then being like, “Am I right, John Slattery and David Ortiz?” (pic via Splash News)...

There are more winter storms on the horizon this week, which means that you'll more than likely be snowed in and housebound for a little while. Conveniently, all of the talk shows are back on the air with new episodes this week, so you will have an endless amount of celebrity interviews, comedy bits and live musical performances to warm your darkened living room while the ice builds outside. The best place to start is "The Late Show With David Letterman," which will feature visits from Justin Bieber (Monday, January 31), the National (Tuesday, February 1), a rare appearance by Howard Stern (Thursday, February 3) and Martha Stewart (Friday, February 4). That's an awful lot of heavy hitters for one show, and that's not even including the "Top Ten" that will be delivered by Mitt Romney on Tuesday, the musical performances by Naughty by Nature (Thursday) and Robert Plant (Friday) and another "Top Ten" care of Bieber (Friday).

It has been quite a week here in the MTV Newsroom. We watched Lindsay and Paris in court, sat down with Tony Yayo for a heart-to-heart, argued about the new judges on "American Idol," watched a ton of television and watched a classic indie rock band in the middle of a crazy-ass lightning storm. All that activity has left us sort of run down, which is why it's time to hop into the hot tub and enjoy a little leisure time. You should do the same, but not before you take a stroll through the links below to catch up with anything you might have missed this week.
» "American Idol" has two new judges in Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, who join Randy Jackson as the show's new adjudication trio.
» While people do seem enthusiastic about the new judges, it appears nobody will ever top the show's original three-way of Simon Cowell,...

I'm not going to lie: I'm super-stoked for the second season of "Glee," premiering tonight at 8 p.m. Will the show suffer a sophomore slump a la "The O.C." or will it stay fresh a la ... actually, I can't think of any hit teen show that stayed awesome in season two. (And don't you dare say "Dawson's Creek" — those Jack and Abby story lines were a mess.)
But I digress.
I got to cover the "Glee" red carpet a few weeks ago and spoke to most of the cast, including Mike O'Malley. Teenagers might only know Mike as Kurt's father (or, if you live in the tri-state area, as the guy who is constantly telling you how great Time Warner Cable is), but I know him as the fast-talking host of Nickelodeon's kids-as-gladiators athletic competition "Guts," which he helmed in the early '90s. I devoured it every Saturday night.

From the best Rachel solos to the most ridiculous story lines, we're honoring the show's breakout moments and stars.

New Directions may not have won regionals on the season finale of "Glee," but the misfits of McKinley High certainly gave their rivals a run for their money. And since they didn't actually take the trophy, we've come up with our own way of honoring the hard-working Gleeks: Some yearbook-style superlatives that we feel perfectly sum up the first season.
Best Music
We've known Rachel could sing from the first note of "Les Miz," but with so many numbers to choose from, it's hard to decide which was her best. Mercedes also got a lot of solo time, but her greatest moment wasn't the show-stopping "Dreamgirls" number you'd expect. Puck, Artie and Kurt had fewer moments in the spotlight, but they all had memorable star turns.
