American Zoetrope's filmography is kind of mind-boggling. Co-founded by "Movie Brats" Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in 1969, the distributor and production company has stayed pretty true to its mission statement of backing not just projects by Coppola and his family, but also experimental and international cinema. The list of directors that've had American Zoetrope in their corner at some point or another is just as extraordinary. There's Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, Godfrey Reggio, Carroll Ballard, and, of course, Tim Burton. Wait, what?
It's true: At the peak of his powers in the 1990s, the ringmaster of the "macabre funhouse" (as /Film's Bj Colangelo has aptly put it) teamed up with Coppola's American Zoetrope for 1999's "Sleepy Hollow."
When you think about it, it's not so surprising that Coppola got in on Burton's creep-tastical revamp of Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

The popular 2005 police procedural series "Bones" is full of murder, gore, desiccated corpses, and ... bones. Most episodes begin with the two main characters, "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), coming across a corpse, often discovered in an unusual or disturbing death pose. The two agents, backed up by a team of passionate pathologists, will then reverse-engineer the circumstances of the corpse's death and determine the depth of foul play involved. There was typically a great deal of foul play involved.
Like other violent shows about death, murder, and corpses, "Bones" was ideal comfort viewing. Despite all the blood, violence, and misery, "Bones" often skewed tonally light, usually involving eccentric side characters and flippant gallows quips. Also, Bones and Brennan typically solved the mysteries of the rotten cadavers, displaying a police investigative system that worked as perfectly as it was designed to.

As the autumn days wear on, horror fans around the world mourn the passing of spooky season and turn their lonely eyes to November. What better film to watch while finishing off the Halloween candy than Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow?
Adapted from Washington Irving’s 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this icy film begins in an autumnal cornfield and ends on a snowy street just in time for a new century. Burton’s version of the story also features a surprising number of witches, a baffling appearance by Christopher Walken, and one of the most stunning villain reveal dresses in cinematic history.

I have fond memories of begging my parents to drive me to the library as soon as the first autumn leaves began to hit the ground. And while I’ve since grown out of R.L. Stine and Lemony Snicket, I still think there’s nothing better to welcome the Halloween season than a warm drink accompanied by a spooky book.
And with October finally upon us, I thought that this might be a good time to start a creepy book club and recommend six Halloween-themed novels that are perfect for All Hallow’s Eve reading lists. After all, there’s something to be said for the quiet terror of finding yourself engrossed by a good horror novel in between scary movie marathons and candy shopping.

The Sleepy Hollow episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Back in 1820, author Washington Irving created a short story entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It brought to life the haunting character of The Headless Horseman. This legendary tale would become the stuff of nightmares and scare people of all ages. So what was the next best thing to do? That’s right…adapt it into a movie! And not just any movie… we’re talking about Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Record Scratch)…Sorry I meant Tim Burton’s 1999 Horror film Sleepy Hollow (watch it Here). Of all the adaptations to release, this one is the perfect version. So why and how did this get made? And how...

'Pet Sematary: Bloodlines' director Lindsey Anderson Beer is to helm the 'Sleepy Hollow' reboot. The filmmaker is making her directorial debut on the Paramount+ horror prequel - which is based on Stephen King's 1983 novel - and will follow up that film by turning her attention to the remake for the same studio.Lindsey is also acting as the writer on the project, which has been delayed by the five-month strike by the Writers Guild of America. In an interview with the new issue of SFX magazine, Lindsey spilled: "I'm directing a 'Sleepy Hollow' reboot for Paramount. I am directing, producing and one day will be writing it again."I turned in the first draft a week before the strike started. So I'm really, really eager to get back on it."But I'm really excited about that. It definitely has more of a horror element to it,...

Ghost stories have been around forever, and will haunt us long after we are ghosts. Before film, most apparitional tales came from novels or short stories. Yes, there were oral traditions of the spooky place down the block or the hitchhiker on a lost highway, but usually someone put it down in a book. Some of the greatest films about hauntings originate as full cinema creations, with a director’s dark vision on the screen, others come from true cases or urban legends. These ghost stories are novel ideas.
This is by no means a complete list. Almost every Edgar Allan Poe film adaptation has a spectral presence; Charles Dickens’ nighttime visitors in A Christmas Carol are only ghosts of presents we wrap for seasonal coverage; director Lew Allen’s 1944 horror feature The Uninvited isn’t here because I haven’t read Dorothy Macardle’s Uneasy Freehold (1941), which it was...

Headless Horseman is this year’s Halloween film from The Asylum, and I’m actually surprised they gave us this and not a supernatural slasher with a title like All Hallows Eve Ends. Instead, we have what sounds like a mashup of Ghost Rider and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
To quote the film’s press release “When seconds from death, a nearly decapitated and desperate man makes a deal with the devil to protect the love of his life and seek revenge on the drug dealer who almost murdered him.” Why does it not surprise me that The Asylum’s lack of quality extends to its marketing department?

Many of us have people in our lives who just aren’t as into horror as we are. Come October, it is tempting to simply hide away, shunning them for a month as we indulge in our favorite genre, as we no doubt will do at least some of the time. But then, they may be open to getting into the Halloween spirit at least a little bit.
For that, there are a number of terrific movies that take place on and around the holiday that are not out of the question for the squeamish. Some fit comfortably into the horror genre and some are far from it, but all beautifully capture the essence of the season.
So, here are a few of our favorite family Halloween movies to get you and the scaredy cat in your life into the Halloween mood for spooky season…

With Disney’s animated sci-fi adventure “Strange World” (opening theatrically November 23), the studio leans into its legacy just as it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2023. In fact, legacy is the theme of this film about a racially mixed family of explorers venturing into uncharted territory. The Clade clan centers on legendary patriarch Jaeger (Dennis Quade); his farmer son, Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal); Searcher’s wife, the expert pilot Meridian; and their restless teenage son, Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White).
When director Don Hall (the Oscar-winning “Big Hero 6”) introduced a 30-minute sneak peek last week at Disney, he mentioned that “Strange World” was influenced by pulp magazines of the ’30s, authors Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs, and some of his favorite action-adventure movies. He even likened it to “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — but with a wacky family right out of “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” He acknowledged that “Strange World” looks...

Tim Burton guides this PG-rated comedy monsterpiece whose stars include Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Winona Ryder. And Michael Keaton is Beetlejuice, the ghost with the most who flings one-liners, spins into grotesque forms, gobbles insects, and who just can’t leave the ladies (living or dead) alone. In addition to taking part in the Plan 9 From Outer Space live stage reading at Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival, Jeffrey Combs is also bringing a literary legend to life on stage with his one-man show, Nevermore: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe. Ahead of his latest live performance as Poe at Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival tonight at the Tarrytown Music Hall, Daily Dead caught up with Combs (who can also be seen in the upcoming horror anthology film Holiday Hell) to discuss playing Poe for more than a decade, the genius of Poe's written works, the tragic real-life story of the Master of the Macabre, and he also discussed reteaming with Greg Nicotero for Shudder's new Creepshow series

Please note: this review is a trifle late, due to a combination of Steam updates and time distortion. It’s been hectic, trying to repair the timestream and update my copy of Stronghold 3 at the same time. Anyway.
There is seeing, there is believing, and there is doing. Oftentimes when you just see something, you cannot believe it; but when you do, you can’t believe it entirely because you’re not doing it. A lot of times, juggling those three elements can be difficult, because if you’re a creator, you don’t know what combination to put them in. You can see something but not be wanted to believe it; you can believe something but not be able to see it. It is very hard to communicate the ability to do something when you are in the confines of a film. That’s where video games play their part.

Mark uncovers the too-often-overlooked gems in the Disney animated movies catalogue...
Not all Disney feature movies get the same level of appreciation, as they're overshadowed by the better known or more rambunctious siblings.
Here are five that, in my view, deserve better...
Alice In Wonderland (1951)
Part of the impressive fifties animated feature line-up, Alice never quite got the love that was reserved for Sleeping Beauty or The Lady And The Tramp. Yet, it's as technically competent, and uniquely styled.
Disney must bear some of the responsibility, however, as, after a somewhat poor box office (by their standards) outing, they demoted Alice to being the launch vehicle for their TV ambitions in a cut-down form. This choice meant that it didn't get recycled at the cinema and moved it down a notch from its 'cinema only' screened peers.

The release of Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, one of the most hotly-anticipated albums of the year. The 13-track LP completes something of a comeback narrative for West that began with the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (when he was ostracized for crashing the stage during a Taylor Swift acceptance speech and went underground for a while) and was built up over the course of the past year with some key live performances, the "G.O.O.D. Friday" download series and the recently-released short film "Runaway." In fact, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is so dense and full of gems that it's necessary to take each song and break it down to its bare elements. Today, we begin with the album-opening track "Dark Fantasy."

Burbank - Traci Lords was the biggest name in showbiz in 1986, but for all the wrong reasons. She had become a major star in the adult industry. Her run started as Penthouse Pet of the month for the issue that exposed Vanessa Williams in September of 1984. Dozens of video titles appeared as she became the it girl noted for her youthful looks.
There was a reason for her looking so young: she’d used fake IDs to appear 20. She was under 18 in dozens of her adult films. Only one was made after she turned 18. The FBI and other police agencies poured over the valley investigating everyone connected to the industry. In the midst of this ugliness, Traci Lords still dreamed of being an actress. Luckily she found entry into the profession through the gates of Roger Corman’s studio.
She was signed to remake Not of This Earth with Jim Wynorski directing.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, has been adapted to film many times; including Tim Burton’s interesting version, Sleepy Hollow(1999), starring Johnny Depp. A memorable one for kids and adults is the classic version, Disney’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow(1949). This version of Washington Irving’s famous tale is narrated by Bing Crosby, so of course there is singing to show off the warm tone of his voice. The music is really fun and the kids will love to sing along. If you have seen Tim Burton’s version you may have noticed that he borrowed a scene from Disney; when the frog...
