If you’ve been on the internet for any length of time since about 2013, you’ve run into the “Florida Man” meme, premised on the idea that, at any given moment, a Florida man is wilding out in a way that’s possibly criminal and definitely irrational. If a man is almost dying getting a lap dance from his housekeeper, snorting coke to hide evidence after fleeing a traffic stop or jogging shirtless in defiance of Hurricane Milton’s imminent landfall, he’s a Florida man. He’s been immortalized in a website, an Instagram feed, a subreddit and quasi-Olympic “Games” where competitors wrestle in muddy water and tussle while holding pitchers of beer. He used to be the subject of a Twitter feed collecting kooky stories, but its curator, Freddie Campion, retired it in 2019. As he told Logan Hill for a piece in the Washington Post that year, Campion shut it down after wondering,...

Fox’s adult-oriented Flintstones update is history.
The animated sequel series Bedrock is no longer in development at the network, sources tells TVLine, though Fox is open to redeveloping the project at a later date. The new take on the classic cartoon would have caught up with the “modern Stone Age family” twenty years later, with Fred on the brink of retirement and twentysomething Pebbles embarking on her own career. Elizabeth Banks was set to voice Pebbles and also serve as an executive producer. (When reached by TVLine, a representative for Banks’ production company Brownstone Productions had no comment.)

In the aftermath of Must-See TV, there was a stretch of time when it seemed like NBC was doing comedy outreach for TV critics, constantly renewing shows like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place and Superstore not because they had huge audiences, but because the audiences they possessed were fervent and vocal.
With the initial success of the Night Court reboot and the cancelation of the ostensibly edgier or more niche — some, like me, might say “better,” but to each their own — American Auto and Grand Crew, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for NBC to think that the way forward is broader and more traditional comedies.
If NBC’s new Extended Family is an example of that way forward, there are, at least, worse fates. This is a multi-camera family sitcom of the most traditional type, with a premise so thin it’s barely a premise at all. In...

NBC took a big swing in 2023 in not only reviving Night Court but in bringing it back with the aim of returning to the classic sitcom style.
Seriously, how long has it been since we've heard a proper laugh track? An entire generation of TV viewers has never experienced the joy of a well-timed pratfall shared with a hundred faceless "live studio audience" members. It's a darned shame, it is.
That big swing connected with audiences and ratings, and NBC renewed the fledgling series a scant few weeks after its premiere in January. But with that jaw-dropping, game-changer finale, where will they go with Season 2?
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Night Court Season 1 Episode 16.
With the universal agreement that John Laroquette is the comedic foundation upon which the revival is built, it came as a shock on the finale when he follows through on his intention to leave Manhattan for a judgeship in Louisiana.

What’s NBC nowadays?
Even before the ongoing writers strike scrambled the network’s fall schedule, its identity — historically quite strong as a place for chewy, grown-up dramas and chic, cerebral sitcoms — had seemed hazy. Promising comedies, the sort that might have grown to fulfill the role recently played by “30 Rock” or “Superstore,” got unceremoniously booted from the air after barely a chance to thrive; new dramas, from “Ordinary Joe” to “The Thing About Pam,” seemed painfully undistinguished.
It’s been a tough few years. And as much as the departure of Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, a career TV executive previously known for her work at Warner Bros.
Television, is just latest bit of media industry consolidation, it’s also a moment to observe that the legacy network and its corporate siblings have struggled to find a way forward. In the years...

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2023 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 95 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 23 contenders from last year. After six years of there being no restrictions on the amount of entrants they could vote for, each member’s selections can now not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which, in this case, will be eight.

“Young Rock” is done.
NBC made the decision official on Friday, canceling the half-hour comedy series inspired by Dwayne Johnson’s life after three seasons.
“Young Rock” followed young Dwayne Johnson as he navigated his rise from unknown wrestler to Hollywood superstar. Together, Dwayne and his unorthodox family faced locker room politics, new rivalries and the perils of burgeoning fame as he found his voice in the WWE as The Rock. Told through stories from his own life, the show followed Dwayne’s journey to the top and the characters that kept him grounded — even as he set his sights on ever-bigger arenas.
Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant and Uli Latukefu played young Dwayne during various stages of his childhood. Joseph Lee Anderson portrayed Dwayne’s late father, Rocky, while Stacey Leilua played his mother, Ata.
The show wrapped its third (and now final) season Feb. 24, averaging less than 2 million viewers per episode.

ABC has opted not to give series orders to four pilots, including legal drama “Public Defenders” starring Anthony Anderson, but will decide the fate of three other pilots, including “The Good Doctor” spinoff “The Good Lawyer,” at a later date, the network confirmed Friday.
The other pilots that won’t move forward to series include the medical drama “The Hurt Unit,” starring Benjamin McKenzie and Melissa George, the Ellie Kemper-led comedy “Keeping It Together” and “Judgement” with “Sex/Life” star Sarah Shahi.
ABC Signature will shop “The Hurt Unit” to other platforms and 20th Television will try to find new homes for “Public Defenders” and “Judgement,” Deadline reported.

ABC is passing on its pilots.
The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.
The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

Hours after NBC made decisions on the bulk of its bubble comedy fare, ABC has passed on nearly all of its remaining pilots.
The Disney-backed broadcaster has passed on dramas The Hurt Unit and Judgment as well as comedies Keeping It Together (formerly Drop-Off) and Public Defenders, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Of the four drama and two comedy pilots that ABC developed this season, only the Good Doctor spinoff, The Good Lawyer, remains in contention. (Kaitlin Olson drama High Potential was previously ordered to series.)
Also remaining on the bubble are comedy Home Economics (awaiting word on a fourth season) and The Rookie spinoff, Feds (awaiting word on season two). Sources say producers ABC Signature is expected to shop medical drama The Hurt Unit, which counts Ben McKenzie and Michelle Ortiz among its cast.
Reps for ABC declined comment.

Network TV just can’t quit Wendi McLendon-Covey! NBC announced a series order for the new comedy series “St. Denis Medical” Friday, which will bring the actress back to primetime shortly after wrapping a 10-season run on ABC’s “The Goldbergs.”
The mockumentary-style show from “Superstore” writers Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin follows “an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity,” per the show’s official logline. McClendon-Covey stars as Joyce, the hospital’s administrator. The show also stars David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Mekki Leeper and Kahyun Kim.

It will be a quick return to network primetime for Wendi McLendon-Covey. NBC has picked up to series St. Denis Medical, its single-camera workplace comedy starring The Goldbergs alumna and veteran David Alan Grier.

The first pickup is not a surprise: St. Denis Medical, written by the Superstore and American Auto duo of Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin and to directed by Superstore’s Ruben Fleischer, was an early front-runner, getting enthusiastic reception in network screenings.

As part of NBC’s comedy moves Friday, the network has handed out a series order to the mockumentary series St. Denis Medical. There is no word yet on the fates of NBC’s three remaining pilots, comedy Non-Evil Twin with Amber Ruffin and dramas Murder by the Book and Wolf.
St. Denis Medical, in the vein of ABC’s breakout Emmy darling Abbott Elementary, is described as a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity. Wendi McClendon-Covey stars in the Universal TV series, marking her first role after she wrapped a 10-season...

“We have to love the creative and we have to love the business model.”
That’s what Fox CEO Rob Wade told reporters Monday ahead of his network’s upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers, as he and his fellow broadcast network executives usher in a harsh new reality that confronts the nearly flatline linear ratings for pricey scripted originals.
That’s also how Wade described the decision to let 911 — Fox’s highest-rated scripted show — move to ABC for the upcoming 2023-24 broadcast season while still keeping its lower-rated spinoff, Lone Star.
Wade, who took over as CEO for Charlie Collier in October 2022, is one of few broadcast execs who carved out time for the press during upfronts week. What has historically been a busy week lined with numerous press calls and presentations for television trade press has now become an afterthought of sorts as Fox, for the second year in a row,...

Viewers won’t get six hours of Dick Wolf dramas in the fall of the 2023-24 season. NBC has released its fall schedule, revealing which new shows are joining the lineup — Jesse L. Martin’s The Irrational, Shanola Hampton’s Found (originally part of this season’s midseason lineup), and Jon Cryer’s Extended Family — and those being held for the midseason, including a couple returning favorites. The network also announced that it had renewed Lopez vs. Lopez and Password for second seasons. Not returning until the midseasons are Law & Order: Organized Crime (Found is taking its slot), La Brea, Magnum P.I., Lopez vs. Lopez, and Password. New unscripted shows to come include an Untitled America’s Got Talent Series and Deal or No Deal Island. NBC is the second broadcast to announce its plans for the fall, and unlike CBS, some significant changes are on the horizon.
Quantum Leap is vacating its Mondays at 10 p.m. slot and will move one night later to Tuesdays.
Replacing the reboot is The Irrational, a new drama series.
Night Court will remain on Tuesdays but will lead into Extended Family.
Wednesdays remain unchanged, with the One Chicago franchise remaining intact into next season -- assuming the writers strike doesn't continue for more than a few months.
Law & Order: Organized Crime is being held for midseason, and the new drama series Found will get the Svu lead out.
The series is very compatible with Svu.
We got to watch two episodes, and we'll share more details on that one nearer to the premiere.
If the strike is not hashed out in the coming months, NBC does have options.
