Crime dramas can sit on a pretty broad spectrum: some are campy, cosy and even comfortingly formulaic, whereas others make you need to sleep with the light on. The one guarantee is that in the UK at least, there’s such an appetite for detectives and crime stories that TV will never run out of new cases to solve.
We’ve already had some top examples in 2023, from the Happy Valley and Endeavour finales to the excellent Belfast-based Blue Lights, but there are plenty more fresh crime dramas on the way, from police procedurals to true crime and murder mysteries. See what’s coming up below.
After The Flood
Very much what it says on the tin, After The Flood begins… after a flood, which devastates a town, but when the waters clear they leave behind an unidentified dead man in the lift of an underground car park. PC Joanna Marshall is on the case,...

The road to redemption can be difficult to walk and even harder to leave behind. Riddled with scandal and scrutiny over the past two years, the HFPA has made blundering attempts to repair its credibility. No surprise, this week’s Golden Globes nominations announcement was mostly met with an unenthusiastic shrug. While the org dropped the ball by snubbing women directors, some choices are worth applauding.
Most notable was the group’s unapologetic embrace of populist titles. It took to the biopic “Elvis” and its star Austin Butler in a big way, handing out best picture (drama) and lead actor nods to the Warner Bros. flick. The multiverse of A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” didn’t seem to confuse members, judging by the film’s strong showing. Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis’ recognition in the acting categories and the Daniels’ mentions for directing and writing are especially encouraging,...

The allegedly new-and-improved Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed its nominations for the 80th Golden Globe Awards on Monday morning. Chosen by 96 of the organization’s members (a figure that suggests some members may have lost their voting rights since a count was last made public) and 103 international voters (who, unlike members, are not all journalists, include quite a few Black people and won’t be paid a five-figure salary in the wake of the organization shifting from a non-profit to a for-profit), the announcement of the picks was not aired or streamed live. That’s a departure from tradition and not exactly a ringing endorsement of the Globes telecast from NBC, which recently found its way out of a Globes broadcasting deal with the HFPA that was supposed to run through 2026, but will now end after the ceremony celebrating 2022 films and TV shows airs on a Tuesday night,...

TV academy voters are faced with a daunting task when they fill out their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballot in that they have to consider 171 shows for Best Drama Series. This is up by 38 from last year. As has been the case since 2017, members do not have to winnow their choices down to a set amount and are instead being told to “vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Last year’s champ, “The Crown,” will not return to seek another victory, as no new episodes of the Netflix series have aired since its fourth season finale in November 2020. Of its seven 2021 rivals, three – “The Boys,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “The Mandalorian” – also did not return in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022. Another two – “Lovecraft Country” and “Pose” – ended their runs in October 2020 and June 2021, respectively.

In this edition of Career Watch, IndieWire’s occasional vocational checkup of actors and directors and those who hope to get there, we take on Johnny Depp.
As a maligned victim of slander, the 58-year-old’s most recent performance played well with the trial jury as well as the court of public opinion. He won 10 million in compensatory damages and 350,000 in punitive damages against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who wrote in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed a year after their divorce that she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The jury ruled that she failed to prove that he physically abused her.
Since then, Depp has discovered TikTok and gratefully calls his fans his “employers,” but of course they don’t write the checks. Those who do are less likely to be swayed by viral social memes — or at least, as Sony recently learned through the spectacular failure of its “Morbius” re-release,...

Jamie Dornan says it was one of the hardest roles he had performed, but “The Tourist” was worth it. The six-part limited series, which debuted on BBC before dropping on HBO Max, follows Dornan’s character, who wakes up in the hospital after an accident with no memory of his past life, which was a messy one.
Instead of homing in on the memory loss and the fact that, well, he’d done some things that have caused a lot of trouble and made a few people want to have him offed, “The Tourist” leans into the humor.
“I think the way it plays with tones, often so abruptly swinging from drama to comedy,” Dornan notes about what sets the series apart — and about what kept him interested. “Just when you think you have a handle on what’s going on, you’re proven wrong.”
As his character, mostly referred to as “The Man,...

Plot and character details for the series are being kept largely under wraps, though sources say the show will follow a procedural format and see Lyonne’s character working to solve different murders in each episode.
Macdonald broke out in her starring role in the 2017 film “Patti Cake,” in which she played the title role. BBC drama director Piers Wenger has stressed the “public interest” in the network’s controversial Jimmy Savile project as he showcased eight upcoming shows that “don’t fit into the convention of genre.”
Featuring Steve Coogan in the lead role, ITV Studios’ four-parter The Reckoning (working title) will air as the decade since Savile’s crimes were exposed shortly after his death approaches and Wenger told a Q&a with journalists on Monday that the show will go further than any documentary has on the subject.
“Our primary intention is to give a voice to the victims and tell stories with the utmost respect,” said Wenger at an event showcasing eight dramas separate from The Reckoning.
“Documentaries [on Savile] take you so far in showing the heinous and appalling nature of his crimes but I’ve yet to see one that shows how he was able to render his victims so powerless or hide in plain sight.

As Mipcom rolled on at Cannes, U.K. public service broadcaster BBC held a preview of its upcoming scripted titles for journalists at an event on Monday presided over by Piers Wenger, director of BBC Drama.
A hot button topic of discussion in recent weeks has been the matter of “distinctively British content.” Hours before he was removed from office, John Whittingdale, then Minister for Media and Data, told the Royal Television Society convention at Cambridge that the government intended to introduce a White Paper that includes a requirement for such content.
“If it’s set in Britain and made in Britain by our public service broadcasters, then it should be distinctively British,” Whittingdale had said.
These proposals were rubbished during a BFI London Film Festival event last week by “Succession” writer Lucy Prebble and “His Dark Materials” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” writer Jack Thorne.

Its development fund with the Safc follows funds with other state agencies Film Victoria and Screen Queensland.
Applications are open from today for the first round, taking selected projects from concept to pitch-ready stage.
Following pitching to Stan, two of the projects will then be selected for a further round of development and commissioning consideration,...

Imagine thinking you’re diverse because your 87-person exclusive club has a few people from Bangladesh, the Philippines, Japan and a smattering of other countries. That’s what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s defense for their lack of members of color has been until very recently. You might as well just say you’re not racist because you have a “Black friend.” According to HFPA member Jenny Cooney in an interview with Australia’s Today Show earlier this month, the lack of Black journalists was “not anything we focused on.”
Following an avalanche of scrutiny regarding the complete lack of Black members since at least 2002, HFPA members have continued to put their Golden feet in their mouths. The last known Black member of the HFPA was Lowell Staine, a native of Belize who died in February 1998, and no evidence has emerged to suggest any other Black members belonged to the group before that time.

Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.
On the movie side of things, Hulu is premiering Boss Level on March 5. This actioner will star the delightful Frank Grillo and the decidedly less delightful Mel Gibson. Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. This comes from Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye and features hours of footage she shot in the ’90s that will depict what...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been an organization that has had noteworthy recognitions in its history, especially in the comedy categories and undoubtedly some questionable judgment calls. Oftentimes, we look to the international group to recognize films and performances that don’t get a worthwhile look from the Academy and other major awards bodies.
Josh Greenbaum’s “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” was released on PVOD on Feb. 12, and with the hilarious turns by Academy Award nominees Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, and a scene-stealing turn from Jamie Dornan, critics and audiences seem to be buzzing about it being the perfect movie during a pandemic. Unfortunately, the film is caught in a “Covid-awards loophole” under the current rules and guidelines for the Golden Globes and SAG Awards and is not eligible for either award in 2022.

Just when this awards season was starting to look like one that might be almost bereft of surprises, a few nominations and some shortlists have thrown some wild cards into the mix. And that’s added a small note of uncertainty to a year that badly needed one.
Granted, nothing earthshaking came out of last week’s Golden Globes and SAG nominations or this week’s Oscar shortlists in nine different categories. The Best Picture front runners are still the ones we’ve known about since the fall: “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Nomadland” and a handful of others.
But in small ways, some weirdness entered the race over the past week and a half. If you’d have asked me on Tuesday morning which films would receive the most notice on the Oscar shortlists — which cover original score, original song, makeup and hairstyling and visual effects, along with international feature,...

‘Nomadland’ and ‘Trial of the Chicago 7’ Battle for HFPA’s Heart: Golden Globes Nominations Analysis
The Golden Globes have sounded off with the first big take on the film year that has included anything but stability and normalcy. Netflix ruled the nominations day as expected with 22 nods for the film side, with David Fincher’s “Mank” leading with six. Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” was also right behind with five with Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” Florian Zeller’s “The Father” and Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” nabbing four apiece.
But what does it all mean to the larger Oscar conversation? Especially with the more important and telling SAG Awards announcing Thursday, could this all be a momentum builder or a “voter cooler” for would-be contenders seeking Academy recognition? With more than a month left until Oscar voting begins, this all could mean nothing in the grand scheme of awards recognition. Academy members have always marched to their own drum, and...
