Looking back, can we imagine a bright-eyed Rebel Wilson stepping onto the set of Paul Feig’s 2011 comedy flick Bridesmaids, ready to dive into the challenging waters of Hollywood? Who could have predicted the bittersweet symphony that would follow her joy at receiving her first American paycheck?
Recently, this cheery Australian actress, known for her exceptional wit and comedic timing, humbly shared her success story and the financial struggle during the Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett. Despite being cast in a hit 2011 comedy that catapulted her into the spotlight, Wilson revealed that the joy was tempered by the harsh reality of a $3,500 salary being swallowed up almost entirely by SAG-AFTRA “union” dues.

Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund may be most celebrated for his extensive music video and concert film output, collaborating with everyone from Madonna to Metallica, Roxette to Rammstein, the Smashing Pumpkins to the Prodigy. His movies, however, brim with an equally intense aesthetic and off-the-cuff kineticism: Spun, Åkerlund's delirious 2002 debut feature, is now widely considered a pinnacle of drug-culture–cinema epics; Small Apartments, his 2012 movie about an outsider searching for his place in the world, would probably attain similar cult status if only it'd reached a larger audience. (In between, he also made the crime-thriller Horsemen,...

In development since at least 2009, alleged real-life story Lords Of Chaos is now back on a faster track thanks to Ridley Scott’s Scott Free company. He has Small Apartments' Jonas Akerlund preparing to direct Caleb Landry Jones and Rory Culkin in a tale of black metal, madness and death.Described this time as based on real events, the new script, which Akerlund co-wrote with Dennis Magnusson, is once again drawing from Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind’s eponymous book which charts the wildly changing fortunes of 17-year-old Øystein Aarseth, who was determined to escape his traditional upbringing in 1980s Oslo. He began playing Norwegian black metal under the name Euronymous with his band Mayhem and drummed up publicity by putting on shocking stunts. But things quickly spiral out of control and his contact with Varg Vikernes, Aka 'The Count', of one-man-band Burzum led to a tragic turn of events.

Though he's one of the most iconic comedy stars of all-time, Billy Crystal has laid pretty low key over the past decade. With the exception of voice work in Monsters University, the actor has only starred in a handful of films. We would say that he's picky, but those films have been the terrible comedies Parental Guidance and Small Apartments. But we're rather interested in a new project Crystal has lined up as Variety reports the When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers star will write, produce and star in Which Witch, a new animated film at The Jim Henson Company with Brian Henson in the director's chair. More below! The film is based on Eva Ibbotson’s 1979 book which follows a wizard who holds a contest among the seven witches of Todcaster to determine which one of them he will marry. It's almost September, which means a whole new slew of titles on Netflix! August proved pretty lucrative on the quality title front, but it looks as though September it's going to blow the rundown out of the water.
TV takes spotlight this month, with the latest full seasons of "The Walking Dead," "New Girl," "The League," "The Blacklist," "Arrow," "Bones," and "Parks and Recreation" primed and ready for streaming before their fall premieres. And fans still mourning the loss of "How I Met Your Mother" (in more ways than one) can rewatch the ninth and final season to their heart's content. Ah, memories. Showtime's recently departed "Californication" can be seen in its entirety (Seasons 1 -7) as well, starting September 1. That's a lot of TV.
Movie fans have plenty to look forward to from Netflix in September, too. Sam Raimi's undersung 1998 thriller "A Simple Plan" hits the streaming service September...

Earlier this week, James Franco got a lot of people buzzing when he publicly called out the producers of Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, a sequel to the Harmony Korine-directed cult hit. The actor alleged that the follow-up was not being done with Korine’s permission and denounced it on his Instagram page, saying it would be “a terrible film.” Now, producers Chris and Robert Hanley of Muse Productions, and Jordan Gertner of Hero Productions, all three of whom are collaborating with Wild Bunch on Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, are firing back.
Speaking exclusively with Variety about the subject, the trio didn’t pull any punches in dissing Franco for his comments. Referencing the actor’s long track record of sequels or reimaginings, including Oz the Great and Powerful, Spider-Man and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Chris Hanley had none too kind words for Franco:

Though Harmony Korine’s neon-soaked crime drama Spring Breakers was one of my favorite films of 2013, I was just as shocked and suspicious as anyone when producers Wild Bunch revealed that they were moving forward with a sequel to the cult favorite, titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming. One immediate cause for alarm was that Korine, whose bold visual style and brilliantly story made Spring Breakers so fascinating, would not be involved.
Now, what I most feared when the project was announced has come to light. According to James Franco, who co-starred in Spring Breakers as the gonzo rapper/gangster Alien, Wild Bunch never even got Korine to give a sequel his blessing. Given Franco’s bizarre social media outbursts over the past few days, maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that the news came via an Instagram vid posted by the actor in character as Alien.

Spring break really is foreverrrr — as evidenced by the news that there’s going to be a sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2012 satire about the latest MTV generation all grown up. Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, Small Apartments) will tackle the role of director, while Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) will script the project. We don’t know much...

Look at my shee-yit... again. Yep, what started as iffy-sounding, blog-based rumor a couple of months ago seems now to have become a real thing: Harmony Korine's girls-gone-wild provocation "Spring Breakers" is getting a sequel. French sales and production company Wild Bunch this morning revealed an intriguing slate of titles that they'll be hawking this month at the Cannes market -- the parallel universe of low-profile and/or unproduced projects that runs busily alongside the film festival itself. Among them were a number of exciting-sounding ventures from name directors, including Gaspar Noé, Paul Verhoeven, Arnaud Desplechin and reigning Palme d'Or winner Abdellatif Kechiche. Naturally, however, the project that has grabbed all the headlines is "Spring Breakers: The Second Coming." A follow-up that will reportedly feature a mix of old and new cast members -- don't count on Selena Gomez returning, at least -- it will follow the original Breakers...

Heads will turn. Wild Bunch just announced their slate of films in the works for the Cannes marketplace, a portion of the Cannes Film Festival where producers, distributors and investors can take a peek at potential projects. Wild Bunch is packing new intense pieces including Paul Verhoeven's revenge thriller, a "Maniac Cop" remake, Gaspar Noe's latest, and the "Spring Breakers" sort-of sequel. We'll break it down for you: "Spring Breakers 2: The Second Coming": It sounds like a horror movie, but let's be honest: you really don't know what to expect. Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval told ScreenDaily, "It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," plus a mix of old and new cast members. What we do know is a team of bikini babes will do battle with a militant Christian converting sect, and "Filth" writer Irvine Welsh is on board.

Production company Wild Bunch has announced plans for Spring Breakers 2 and a Maniac Cop remake.
Of the companies announcing their slates ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, Wild Bunch is the first to announce something of a surprise. For it's announced a rather unexpected sequel: Spring Breakers: The Second Coming.
Harmony Korine, who wrote and directed the first movie, won't be back for the second. Instead, Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) will write the script and Jonas Ackerlund will direct. Ackerlund is most famed for his music video work including, er, The Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up, but has directed features such as Spun, Small Apartments and the rather good Horsemen.
The film will see the bikini-clad criminals going up against a bunch of extreme militant Christians who attempt to convert them. It certainly sounds interesting.

Production company Wild Bunch has announced plans for a sequel to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. The follow-up will form part of the company’s upcoming slate at Cannes.
From the brief synopsis offered up, this time around the Breakers in question will do “battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.” Blimey. Sounds as mad as the first flick. Expect bikini-clad teens wielding an arsenal of weapons.
Tentatively titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, intentions are to generate interest prior to selling the film at the prestigious festival this month. And by the looks of the talent attached, they should have no problem there. Set to direct is Spun and Small Apartments director Jonas Akerlund, confirming star James Franco’s comments that original director Korine had no interest in revisiting the material.

Considering the story of last year's outlandish Spring Breakers doesn't really lend itself to a sequel, we're a little bit perplexed about this report from ScreenDaily saying that Wild Bunch is bringing the title Spring Breakers: The Second Coming to Cannes. But then again, since director Harmony Korine, who actually made a poignant statement in the film that wasn't legitimately glorifying guns and girls, isn't involved, it makes perfect sense. Instead, the project has Small Apartments director Jonas Åkerlund on board to direct with a script coming from Trainspotting and Filth writer Irvine Welsh. What's the story? Well, in what sounds like Red State meets Spring Breakers, the logline describes the film following, "the Spring Breakers doing battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them." With a script from Irvine Welsh, this has the potential to be a subversive sequel, but at the same time,...

There are really two different Cannes Film Festivals. There's the Cannes we know and love, the place where the filmmakers walk the red carpet and some of the biggest films of the year make their world premiere. And then there's the Cannes marketplace, where producers, distributors, investors and more all get the next wave of movies in front of people who can sign checks and make deals. And today, production company Wild Bunch has revealed the movies they'll be bringing to wheel and deal, and there's some surprising stuff. Easily the one that will get folks talking the most is a sequel (of sorts) to Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers." Cheap cash in? That's what we thought, but you don't hire someone like Irvine Welsh ("Trainspotting," "Filth") to write the script if that's the case. Sick Day will mark Garelick’s sophomore outing as a director, following his upcoming comedy The Wedding Ringer. Cahan previously wrote My Best Friend’s Girl,...

Man is there a lot of new content on streaming services this week. There are literally hundreds of new titles available for your viewing pleasure, I couldn’t possibly have written about all of it because I would be writing into next week! Just know that there is something there for everyone whether your bag is comedy, drama, action or horror.
Most impressively this week, Netflix have stepped up to the plate and unleashed a full load of good stuff. They have also announced that they are going to add an audio commentary to their original show House of Cards, which can only be good news for those holding on to their physical media love and may mean that this most valuable of DVD extras is not going away but will instead be reborn in a different guise.

Franklin Franklin (Lucas) plays the alphorn and dreams of Switzerland. His crazy brother sends him fingernail clippings in the mail. One of his neighbours is a forgetful pot-head, the other a gruff busy-body who doesn’t miss anything. Across the street live a mother and her fifteen-year-old daughter, whom he likes to watch from his window, but none of these are Franklin’s real problem. The real problem is his landlord; lying dead on the kitchen floor. Switzerland seems further and further away.
Small Apartments was written by Chris Millis and based on his novel. It was produced by Ash R. Shah,

Hard to believe it’s been nearly 30 years since Dolph Lundgren burst onto the scene as Rocky IV baddie Ivan Drago. Since then he’s gone on to a steady career in action movies, mostly the B-level, direct-to-dvd variety but with occasional forays into A-list territory. He recently re-teamed with Sylvester Stallone for the all-star Expendables flicks, and has also made a point to take on more offbeat roles in unexpected projects like the quirky comedy Small Apartments. It’s all part of an effort to hold the interest of the Swedish native, who in addition to being able to kick your [...]

Most of us understand that as we age, it's important to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Go for a jog (or a "yog" if you're Ron Burgundy) once in a while. Maybe opt for a salad sometimes instead of a few slices of pizza. If you work at a desk, perhaps you make sure you walk around your office for five minutes every hour. Feel that burn.
Then there are others who take that notion to extreme lengths, who hear "maintain a healthy and active lifestyle" and think "lift enough weights every day of my life to tear a horse in half with my bare hands and have a laughing fit in its blood."
That last part may have been an exaggeration (though for some reason I can especially see Vin Diesel laughing maniacally in horse blood), but the following nine Hollywood actors would probably tell you that, yes,...

Stone age story bashes Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz the Great and Powerful to take the top spot ahead of Easter weekend
The winner
After the relative disappointment of Rise of the Guardians led to significant job losses at DreamWorks Animation, the outcome for the company's follow-up The Croods was always bound to receive extra attention. What's more, The Croods is the first film going out internationally through new distribution partner Twentieth Century Fox, following a long association with Paramount. The result – a £5.37m UK debut including £1.85m in previews – is a happy outcome for all parties, especially when you consider that snow and bitter cold over the weekend provided one less reason to leave the house, leading to significant drops for many films already on release.
For comparison, Rise of the Guardians debuted last November with £1.97m. Madagascar 3, which benefited from an inherited audience, kicked off with £6.03m including £2.39m in previews.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s back! The actor turned governor has come back to action movie starring roles with The Last Stand.
Schwarzenegger (The Terminator) plays Ray Owens, a former Lapd narcotics cop who, after bungling an operation, goes to work as the sheriff for the sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. He has to get his big guns out again when the notorious leader of a drug cartel (Eduardo Noriega, Vantage Point) escapes an FBI prisoner convoy.
The R-rated film also stars Forest Whitaker (Pawn), Peter Stormare (Small Town Murder Songs), Luis Guzman (The Count of Monte Cristo), Johnny Knoxville (Small Apartments) and Harry Dean Stanton.
The Last Stand was largely ignored by moviegoers when it was in theaters, grossing a not great $12 million in wide release. Drama Promised Land grossed more than half that on far fewer screens.

Chris Mills, who adapted the screenplay for Small Apartments from his novel of the same name, considers this film a black comedy; but there’s very little humor to be found. Set in a seedy apartment complex, the characters who reside in these small apartments are too trashy and depressing to be very funny. However, this doesn’t stop the characters from being surprisingly engaging.
Take, for instance, the lead character Franklin Franklin—played by Matt Lucas (remember Kristin Wiig’s weird roommate in Bridesmaids?). Franklin is a socially awkward man who never wears pants, preferring to show off his white briefs and green clogs. As he decides how to deal with his dead landlord’s body that is lying on his kitchen floor, we get insight into his peculiar mind and that of his crazy brother Bernard (James Marsden). Dolph Lundgren has been the consummate action star since the 1980s, when he burst onto the film scene in the Bond flick, "A View to a Kill," before playing Rocky's Russian nemesis Ivan Drago in "Rocky IV" and He-Man in "Masters of the Universe."
He took on a different-than-usual challenge recently, playing the famous psychologist Dr. Sage Mennox in the ensemble comedy-drama, "Small Apartments."
Lundgren talked briefly with NextMovie about black hair dye, being honest with yourself, and which cast member of "The Expendables" would pose a threat to him in a fight.
Congratulations on "Small Apartments." You're obviously known for taking roles that show off your ability, you know, to beat the crap out of people.
(laughs) Exactly.
How much fun was it to play a guy who manipulates people mentally?
It was cool. Yeah. One of the first times I've played a guy who's educated, or at least he pretends to be.

Neighboring Groans: Akerland’s Tone Deaf Latest Cranks Manic Quirk
Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund returns with his third feature, Small Apartments, based on a novel by Chris Mills which was the top prize recipient in a Canadian Three-Day Novel Contest back in 2000. Akerlund’s 2002 debut, Spun, may have generated a sort of cult audience, but his last narrative directorial effort was a dismally received 2009 Dennis Quaid apocalyptic thriller Horsemen. This latest title still doesn’t even come close to outshining his best work, namely music videos for Madonna’s “Ray of Light” or Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”, and instead sees the filmmaker returning to garish, quirk oriented material, adapted for the screen by the text’s original author. While this may be miles ahead of the original source material of Akerlund’s Quaid clunker (which had been penned by Dave Callaham, best known for his Expendables screenplays), this tonally uneven...

David Koechner has become a ubiquitous presence in comedy films over the last ten years, from "Anchorman" and "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" to "Waiting ..." and "Get Smart." He recently played a detective in the offbeat ensemble comedy "Small Apartments," with Matt Lucas and Billy Crystal.
He currently stars in "Full On Koechner," a YouTube-based web series in partnership with Official Comedy and found at Koechner's YouTube channel.
Koechner recently spoke with us about tighty-whities, Malcolm Gladwell and becoming Champ Kind again.
"Small Apartments" is probably the darkest movie I've ever laughed out loud at in my life. What were your emotions while reading the script for the first time?

Matt Lucas (Alice In Wonderland, Bridesmaids) leads a hilarious allstar cast in the new comedy Small Apartments, available February 19th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Directed by award-winning film and music video director Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi”), the film premiered at the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival. Nick Nunziata of Chud.com hailed the film, saying “They don’t make them like this anymore. Actually they’ve never made them like this before.”
Lucas appears in his first leading role as “Franklin Franklin,” a clumsy recluse who embarks on a hapless cover-up after accidentally killing his landlord. Also starring in the film is Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally), Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises), James Marsden (X-Men: The Last Stand), Peter Stormare (Fargo), Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction), Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables), Rosie Perez (Pineapple Express), and Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect), with James Caan (The Godfather) and...

Later this month, the inexplicably star-studded Movie 43 ventures into theaters for some raunchy laughs, and now a new trailer for a peculiar comedy called Small Apartments, also with a strange assembly of well-known talent, has arrived. This premiered at SXSW last year, and will get a limited theatrical release in February before hitting DVD shelves a little later. British TV talent and Bridesmaids co-star Matt Lucas leads the film, joined by UK counterpart Rebel Wilson along with Johnny Knoxville, James Caan, Billy Crystal and more. This looks like a weird one, and probably a comedy dud, but see for yourself below. Here's the trailer for Jonas Akerlund's Small Apartments, in high def from Apple: When a clumsy deadbeat (Matt Lucas) accidentally kills his landlord, he must do everything in his power to hide the body, only to find that the distractions of lust, the death of his beloved brother,...

Rebel Wilson had a hell of a 2012, popping up in films as varied as Bachelorette and Ice Age: Continental Drift, as well as What To Expect When You're Expecting and Pitch Perfect. She.ll ring in the New Year with the indie flick Small Apartments, which will be hitting theaters in limited release at the beginning of February and then will continue on to Blu-ray and DVD on February 19. Based on a book by director Chris Millis, Small Apartments premiered at the 2012 SXSW film festival. Wilson appears in the film as a renter dating Johnny Knoxville. The couple lives in the same apartment building as protagonist Matt Lucas (whom Wilson also lived with in 2011's Bridesmaids), who stars in the film as a dude dealing with the problem of a dead landlord. Additionally, Billy Crystal, James Marsden, Juno Temple, Dolph Lundgren, and James Caan appear in the flick. Sony Pictures...

Trapped in his seedy La apartment with the body of the landlord on the kitchen floor, Franklin is surrounded by eccentric neighbors, including a stoner (Johnny Knoxville, Jackass: The Movie) and his girlfriend (Rebel Wilson, Pitch Perfect), a wanna-be stripper (Juno Temple, Killer Joe) and an artist (James Caan, The Gambler). To add to his problems, a drunk investigator (Billy Crystal, When Harry Met Sally) is questioning him about his landlord. But none of this fazes Franklin as he dreams of Switzerland, and waits...

Premiering last spring at SXSW, Jonas Akerlund's Small Apartments garnered decent buzz as a starring vehicle for British comedian Matt Lucas, went on its merry way to a string of other festivals, but hasn't really been heard from much since. Well, in light of a U.S. home release on February 19th 2013, we now have a trailer that, while not garnering any big laughs from me, I did find to be quite thoroughly and delightfully odd. Between Matt Lucas' vast arsenal of wigs, Billy Crystal's booze-hound of a detective, and, perhaps the icing on the cake, Dolph Lundgren as a motivational author, things look most assuredly weird, with a definite touch of Scandinavian humor transplanted to the sun-bleached bogusness of SoCal.And while there appear to...

Remember Kristen Wiig’s oddball roommates in Bridesmaids? Well, actors Matt Lucas (Little Britain) and Rebel Wilson are back together in Small Apartments, a comedy about one sad Swiss-obsessed man’s misadventures after his landlord drops dead in his kitchen. Lucas plays the sad man, one unfortunately named Franklin Franklin who plays the alphorn in his undies. Wilson pops up as another character that only she could play.
The film, which premiered at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, also stars Billy Crystal, Juno Temple, James Marsden, James Caan, and Johnny Knoxville. It arrives on DVD and video-on-demand on Feb.
