Back in 2018, while presenting Best Director alongside Ron Howard at the Golden Globe Awards, Natalie Portman created a meme: “And here are the all-male nominees,” Portman said, pointedly underlining the omission of presumed contenders like Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird” and Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman.”
Speaking a month after the ceremony, Portman said she wanted to bring attention to the disparity in the directors’ field without throwing the male nominees under the bus. “It’s not their fault, and they all made great work. You don’t want to not recognize them,” she said to BuzzFeed. “It’s just, why aren’t we recognizing the people who aren’t part of this exclusive club?”
But, Portman added, her goal was to make clear the obvious. “We have to make it weird for people to walk in a room where everyone’s not in the room,” she said. “If you...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Picture and the lack of an outright frontrunner.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! *Mr. Burns voice* Release the hounds! We’ve officially rang the bell on Oscar season — even though we’ve been ringing the bell since our ridiculously early Oscar picks in March — and this is already shaping up to be one of the most formless Phase 1s we’ve had in quite a while. In keeping with the theme of the 2024 presidential election, the buzzword I’ve heard from so many people about the race so far is “weird.” Last year at this time, many had already seen the 10 movies that would wind up getting nominated for Best Picture, with “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” leading the charge...

I recently reported that Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”) had taken the lead in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor, based on the combined predictions of thousands of our users. But “A Real Pain” co-star Kieran Culkin said, “Hold my beer,” and climbed up to tie him at the top. Now both men are dead even with odds of 5/1.

As of September 19, there are six Expert journalists forecasting a victory for Maclin and six forecasting a victory for Culkin, making this a dead heat. In the 12 weeks since Gold Derby’s 2025 Oscars predictions center launched, over 3,800 users have made their nominee picks in nine major categories. The season’s most significant period of change so far coincided with the conduction of the annual Venice, Telluride, and Toronto film festivals, the awards portions of which have given the general public a clearer idea of which movies will ultimately appeal to academy voters.
One of the past week’s most interesting developments was the surprising coronation of “The Life of Chuck” as the Toronto festival’s newest People’s Choice Award winner. Many believed runners-up “Anora” and “Emilia Pérez” had better shots at the coveted prize, but neither ended up in the position to directly follow “American Fiction” as the 13th such honoree in a row to earn Best Picture and Screenplay Oscar nominations. Since being added to our predictions center last Sunday, “The Life of Chuck...

The State of the Race
If there is one major Oscar race that has changed the most due to the Academy’s push to become more globally-minded, it is the Best Director race. Recent surprise nominees, from “Anatomy of a Fall” filmmaker Justine Triet last year to “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund and “Drive My Car” director Ryusuke Hamaguchi the years prior, have often been directors that appealed more to the tastes of international voters.
Fast forward to now, and that sort of Cannes crowd really is leading the conversation...

In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

With the first round of fall film festivals coming to an end, the reality is settling in that 2024 just has not been the best year in film so far. There’s no Oscar front-runner for Best Picture this year as clear and as strong as “Oppenheimer” was at around this time in 2023, so we’re bound to see fluctuation in our odds for Best Picture as the season progresses. That’s especially true now after a glut of film festivals around the world from Venice to Toronto to Telluride have unveiled many of the fall’s top contenders. But the new front-runner for Best Picture and Best Director in our odds is a film that had its world premiere back in May: Cannes Film Festival champ “Anora.”
The film, about the whirlwind romance between the title character (current Best Actress favorite Mikey Madison) and the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn), made its grand entrance onto the awards stage at the Cannes Film Festival. There it became the first American film since “The Tree of Life” (2011) to win the Palme d’Or.

Casting for Spielberg’s film appears to be ongoing at a decent clip, with Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor said to be in the running for lead roles in recent months. Most recently, Irish actor Eve Hewson, who previously appeared in Spielberg’s Bridge Of Spies, was also singled out as a potential addition to the growing roster, which may also include Colin Firth.

Steven Spielberg has been putting together quite the cast for his next major project, and Deadline reports that Colman Domingo (Euphoria) is in early talks to join up.
Should Domingo sign on the dotted line, he would join a cast that includes Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and Eve Hewson (Hedda). As for the project itself, we don’t know much about it, only that it’s said to be a UFO movie based on Spielberg’s own original idea, with David Koepp (Jurassic Park) writing the screenplay. A UFO movie from the man who gave us Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and War of the Worlds is pretty much all I need to know. Bring it on. Universal Pictures has already slated the project for a May 15, 2026 release.
Domingo has been enjoying a hell of a run over the last year.

Exclusive: Steven Spielberg isn’t done adding to the A-list ensemble for his next event film as sources tell Deadline Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo is in early talks to join the untitled film from Spielberg, Amblin and Universal. Domingo joins a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson.
The pic is based on a story by Spielberg and has the filmmaker’s longtime collaborator David Koepp penning the script.
Universal and Amblin had no comment.
Kristie Macosko Krieger is producing. Plot details have been kept under lock and key.
Universal has dated the film for May 15, 2026, landing it in the summer tentpole zone Spielberg practically created decades ago with such films as Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It would mark his fist major summer release in quite some time.
Domingo has been on quite a run that started last fall with his critically acclaim role in Netflix’s Rustin.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Nothing like a little decapitation to ring in the spooky season! Expanding on one of its most beloved showcases, “Mind F*ck Night” the Lower East Side Film Festival is unveiling a new, three-day pop-up festival called “Off/Season.” The series will focus on terrifying, mind-altering, genre-defying cinema and feature a curated selection of advanced screenings, retrospectives, short films, as well as filmmaker Q&As and receptions, all held at the Alamo Drafthouse, Lower Manhattan location from October 2-4.
In honor of the film’s 60th anniversary, “Off/Season” is proud to present “Strait-Jacket” from B-Movie horror master William Castle. James Bond. Benoit Blanc. Joe Bang. These characters have become synonymous with Daniel Craig’s career. Now, Craig adds William Lee, a drug-addicted gay American expat, to that list in Luca Guadagnino’s sexually charged and fantastical love story, “Queer.” The film made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, where Guadagnino and co-star Drew Starkey participated in a post-screening Q&a.
Craig’s sensitive and transformative portrayal of a emotionally fractured man could be his greatest performance yet. It might even land him at the center of the Oscar race for best actor — if the more conservative Academy voters aren’t squeamish about the film’s sexually graphic scenes or put off by its non-traditional narrative.
Based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel, “Queer” follows Lee, an American expat living a life of near isolation, save for brief encounters with a small group of acquaintances. When...

The US actor heads a cast largely made up of former inmates in Greg Kwedar’s low-key tale about the redemptive power of theatre
Colman Domingo is at the peak of his considerable powers in Greg Kwedar’s inspirational, fact-based prison drama Sing Sing. The actor, who was Oscar-nominated last year for his lead performance in Rustin, and who has given eye-catching supporting turns in If Beale Street Could Talk, The Color Purple, Zola and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, to barely scratch the surface, has an effortless magnetism that draws the eye and makes him the focus of every frame. The kind of performer who doesn’t need to say a word to speak volumes, he is, without doubt, one of the finest actors currently working. All of which makes his casting in this small-scale, intimate, ripped-from-reality tale an unexpectedly risky decision.

The packaging and financing of drama films has become increasingly challenging, a panel of experts told Winston Baker‘s inaugural Film & Television Finance Forum Venice on Friday afternoon. “Dramas have gone from being difficult to very difficult,” Benjamin Kramer, co-head of the media finance department at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), said during the panel entitled “State of the Industry: State of Finance.”
Still, “there are plenty of dramas of all budget tiers that get made … even $30 million,” noted Kramer, who has been involved in the packaging, financing, and sale of such films as Sing Sing, Nyad, and The Revenant. The funding and level of funding will always be “depending on the filmmaker, depending on the cast, depending on if it’s based on something significant,” he added.
Kramer’s comments came in response to a question from fellow panelist and Italian producer Lorenzo Gangarossa (Conclave).

Horror Afraid leads the new titles at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend, launching in 450 locations for Sony.
Directed by Chris Weitz, Afraid stars John Cho and Katherine Waterston as devoted parents who get selected to try a new smart home AI device. The device quickly becomes overprotective of the family and begins interfering in their lives.
It is the latest feature from horror juggernaut Blumhouse, this year’s titles of which include Imaginary (£2m) and Night Swim (£1.4m). The film will have stiff competition from Disney’s fellow horror Alien: Romulus which was up to £8.8m at the end of last weekend.

We sat down with director Greg Kwedar for a long chat about his powerful film Sing Sing, starring Colman Domingo and an alumni cast of people previously incarcerated at the titular prison.

It’s late August. Do you know where (and what) your Oscar contenders are?
In the past, I would have answered that question by saying, “No, but in about three weeks I will.” That’s because the end of August brings the beginning of the three fall film festivals that for decades have been the most fruitful ground for premiering Academy Award winners and nominees.
For 14 years between 2007 and 2020, from “No Country for Old Men” to “Nomadland,” the Oscar Best Picture winner screened (and in all but three cases premiered) at the Venice International Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival or the Toronto International Film Festival, and in many cases in more than one of those festivals. And for most of that time, the majority of Best Picture nominees came out of the Venice-Telluride-Toronto axis.
But then things changed. The 2021 winner, for the first time ever, was a Sundance movie,...

Colman Domingo leads an impressive ensemble cast in Greg Kwedar’s affecting drama. Here’s our Sing Sing review.
Grew Kwedar’s powerful Sing Sing begins in the blinding lights of a stage. Colman Domingo’s Divine G is performing and the camera observes his face as he runs through his dialogue with conviction.
From the opening shots, you’d never guess Sing Sing takes place inside prison walls. Kwedar’s film, which he wrote the script for together with Clint Bentley, is based on the real Rehabilitation Through the Arts program in Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, which has been running for several decades. John “Divine G” Whitfield and Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin have also contributed to the story and Maclin also appears in the film, playing himself.

“Succession” star Kieran Culkin is poised to make the journey from the Emmys to the Oscars thanks to his role in the red-hot film, “A Real Pain.” From Searchlight Pictures, “A Real Pain” is written and directed by actor Jesse Eisenberg, who made his debut as writer-director in 2022 with the acclaimed “When You Finish Saving The World.” This one follows Eisenberg and Culkin as a pair of mismatched cousins who tour through Poland in an attempt to honor their grandmother. Their journey is threatened to be derailed, however, when old tensions and family history, rear their head once more.
The trailer for the film promises a smart, witty comedy-drama that seems perfect for the quick-fire delivery styles of both Eisenberg and Culkin. Culkin, in particular, could really shine here in his role as Benji Kaplan. In fact, we are so excited about this film that Culkin is currently in our...

Denzel Washington has consistently delivered standout performances — including as a director in recent years! — across his decades-long career. He already has two Oscars to his name and could be on his way to a third Academy Award with his role in Ridley Scott‘s “Gladiator II.”
This follow-up to the 2000 Best Picture champ stars Lucius (Paul Mescal) as Lucius, the grandson of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. Lucius is forced into slavery but resolves to fight as a gladiator under the leadership of power broker Macrinus. And that’s where Washington comes in. The titanic Washington plays Macrinus, who is the mentor figure to Lucius and also opposes the rule of emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).
We are predicting that Washington will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor alongside Samuel L. Jackson (“The Piano Lesson”), Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), and Stanley Tucci (“Conclave...

“No one can tell you not to create. You must create,” Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo told a crowd of Arkansas-based filmmakers and fans during Variety’s Southern Storytellers panel at the Filmland festival and conference in Little Rock.
Co-founder of Filmland (and director of 1960s motorcycle club saga “The Bikeriders”) Jeff Nichols presented Domingo with the event’s inaugural Southern Storytellers Award, before joining Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge in steering a wide-ranging conversation about the craft with Domingo and half a dozen other writers, directors and producers.
On the prison-set, rehabilitation-through-art drama “Sing Sing,” which screened the same day, Domingo served as a producer alongside fellow panelists Clint Bentley and Monique Walton. All three shared how their careers had started, explaining that while storytelling may not be the most stable career, they’ve all learned to “hustle” to sustain it.
