Pre-Hysterical Man is Popeye's 154th theatrical cartoon, produced by Famous Studios and released on March 26, 1948.
Plot[]
Popeye and Olive are atop the highest peak in Yellowstone Park; Olive falls off into a deep hole, where a Bluto-like caveman and a dinosaur are still living. Olive almost ends up eaten by the dinosaur, but the caveman (longing for a woman) saves her. Olive falls for him, but Popeye, noticing his girlfriend's absence, comes down and saves her from the caveman. They fight it out; the caveman stuffs the sailor into a not-quite-empty spinach can and feeds him to the dinosaur, but, of course, Popeye breaks out and wins the day.
Trivia[]
- First cartoon to use the 1948 version of the Popeye theme. It is also the first cartoon to have the theme played when the spinning star appears, which would be the case for all remaining theatrical cartoons. However, parts of the 1943 theme would still be used until 1951.
- When this short was remastered in the DVD release for The 1940s Volume 3, it was revealed that the cartoon had the 1945 Paramount Cartoons logo. It is the last Popeye short to end with the 1945 version of the Paramount Cartoons logo before being edited with clouds, starting with Popeye Meets Hercules.
