Katherine Kiernan Mulgrew se narodila 29. dubna 1955 do rodiny uznávané malířky Joan a úspěšného obchodníka a politika Thomase. Přišla na svět jako druhé nejstarší dítě a své dětství strávila společně se sedmi dalšími sourozenci v iowském Dubuque. Když opustila domov, aby mohla v New Yorku studovat herectví, nebylo jí ani dvacet let. Přijali ji na Konzervatoř Stelly Adlerové.
