Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. Just when you think you’ve got your career all figured out; something pops up to remind you that the road to stardom is often paved with banana peels. Take Bryan Cranston, for instance—our beloved Walter White almost found himself in a bit of a pickle thanks to a scene from his previous gig, Malcolm in the Middle.

Yes, this transformation almost hit a roadblock thanks to one particular scene that had executives second-guessing their choice. They were still picturing him in the silly, lighthearted scenes from Malcolm in the Middle, particularly a memorable moment where he hilariously shaves his body. This left them struggling to see him as a dramatic figure capable of playing a drug lord in Breaking Bad.

Mads Mikkelsen has played many villains over the years. From cannibalistic serial killers to Bond villains, and even an evil lion, there is no denying that the man has talent. From his first big role as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, he captivated audiences in a way that very few villains have been able to in the Bond franchise.

Since then, he has become Hollywood’s top pick for an antagonist. Although this means that he has gained an immense amount of success, it also seems to have affected his image in some way or another. During the filming of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, something quite odd happened between Mikkelsen and Harrison Ford that made things seriously awkward for the Hannibal actor.

Gillian Anderson is one of the most respected actresses in British television. Although the world best knows her for her performance in shows like X-Files, The Fall, Sex Education, and The Crown, she has done several other works that deserve just as much, if not more, recognition. There is no better example of an award-winning performance from her side than Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal.

The series is critically acclaimed for several reasons, ranging from its unique stylistic approach to its breath-taking performances, and impressive writing. The series manages to flush out every single character to their fullest degree, and a side character like Bedelia Du Maurier was no different.
During an interview, Anderson revealed the reason why she joined the cast of the series, even though she was playing a side character.

The 2019 royal interrogation of Prince Andrew has become one of the most talked-about interviews ever. The heated Newsnight interview saw BBC journalist Emily Maitlis question the Duke of York about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his possible involvement in it. The exchange in Buckingham Palace was Andrew's chance to prove his innocence... and it backfired, enormously.
The interview, which the 3-episode miniseries chronicles, was chased down by Maitlis and willingly sought after by Prince Andrew to clear his name and public image. The 50-minute exchange famously backfired for Andrew, after some rather peculiar alibis, and questionable statements -- the fact that he doesn't sweat and that he could perfectly recall exactly what he was doing on one random day from decades ago.

Jared Leto’s Method acting ways on everything from Suicide Squad to Morbius have generated so much attention that when Jeff Bridges reported for work on Tron: Ares, he didn’t quite know what to expect.
“I hadn’t met him before. I’m saying, ‘What’s it gonna be like?’ because he was also a producer of the show, big fan of the original, working on it for 10 years. I came in, and you know how each set has a different vibe?” Bridges asked Rob Lowe during an appearance on his podcast series, SiriusXM’s Literally! A quarter century after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” Angelina Jolie is hoping to pick up the Best Actress trophy for her performance in “Maria.” In terms of Oscar history, she’d join Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Zellweger, who all won for featured performances before prevailing again for star turns.
Jolie’s role, that of real-life opera singer Maria Callas, has already been proven to be awards-worthy and won Jane Seymour an Emmy nearly four decades ago. This English rose featured in the 1988 TV movie “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World,” opposite Raul Julia as Aristotle Onassis and Anthony Quinn as his father, Socrates. This remains her only Emmy win from five nominations.
Zellweger won Best Actress for her sensitive portrayal of Judy Garland in the 2020 flick “Judy.” Back in 2001, Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis took home Emmys for their work...

Amazon enthusiastically announced the Sept. 19 release date for A Very Royal Scandal with the declaration, “The critically acclaimed A Very … Scandal anthology is back!”
My primary questions include: Was “Scandal” included so that nobody would think A Very Royal Scandal was, in some way, a part of a franchise that perhaps started with 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel? Does your average television viewer even accept the existence of the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise? And, perhaps most sincerely, even if we acknowledge that the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise exists, what does it mean? What are the unifying characteristics between 2018’s A Very English Scandal, 2021’s A Very British Scandal and now A Very Royal Scandal, a trio of limited series without an overlapping character, star, writer or director?

When Prince Andrew invited BBC current affairs show “Newsnight” to interview him at Buckingham Palace in 2019, neither he – nor his interviewer Emily Maitlis – had any inkling that it would not only result in the British royal’s public disgrace, including being stripped of his titles and patronages, but would spawn two dramatizations within five years. (And it’s likely they won’t be the last).
The interview was, to put it plainly, seismic. Not just personally catastrophic for Andrew, who found himself effectively barred from public life after it aired, as well as paying out a multi-million-dollar settlement to his accuser Virginia Giuffre, but reverberated through the royal family all the way up to the monarch.
The outsize impact of that interview is something that Michael Sheen, who plays the prince in Prime Video’s “A Very Royal Scandal,” out on Thursday, has had ample time to contemplate. To get into the role,...

For decades, the British Royal Family managed to maintain a certain mystique and allure. Tabloid fodder and salacious stories leaked occasionally, but in the 1990s, the scandals surrounding Princess Diana and King Charles’ marriage almost caused the entire enterprise to collapse. However, the royals seemed to hit new heights in popularity in 2018 when Prince Harry married Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Yet, just a few short years later, it all crumbled. Queen Elizabeth II was ailing, Prince Harry and Meghan exited the royal family and Prince Andrew’s long relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced. Created by Jeremy Brock, Prime Video’s limited series “A Very Royal Scandal” is a frank and engaging examination of the shocking interview between Prince Andrew (Michael Sheen) and journalist Emily Maitlis (Ruth Wilson) that would lead to the Duke of York’s ousting from public life and define Maitlis’ career.

Is there anything to be gained from watching a second take on Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 interview about his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein? Surprisingly, the answer is yes.
Prime Video’s three-episode series A Very Royal Scandal premieres Sept. 19. It arrives just months after Netflix’s Scoop, released in April 2024. But even though the two cover similar ground, the new drama offers a fresh interpretation of the one-on-one conversation that effectively ended the Duke of York’s royal career. It digs deeper into the prince’s motivations for sitting down with Newsnight, delivering a compelling portrait of a deluded and isolated man fighting not just public opinion but his own extended family as he tries to defend his indefensible actions.

There’s not much that needs to be said while introducing Bryan Cranston as his work in front of the camera has always proven that he’s one of the greatest actors in modern history. Cranston made his acting debut at the age of 8, which isn’t a commonly known fact about him. It was during the 90s that his career began to pick up.

The Los Angeles native landed the role of Tim Whatley on the hit 90s sitcom produced by Jerry Seinfeld himself, Seinfeld. Whether it was his ability to deliver hilarious dialogues or the on-screen romance that boiled between Whatley and Elaine Benes, Cranston’s role made him extremely popular. But not nearly as much as Breaking Bad did in 2008.

In Coralie Fargeat’s body horror shocker The Substance, Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister who is unceremoniously fired from her fitness TV show by a loathsome studio boss, played by Dennis Quaid. Feeling defeated, Sparkle can’t resist the draw of an experimental new drug called that promises to reveal a younger and even better version of herself.
If you’ve seen the trailer, then you know what happens next: Sparkle takes the leap, injects herself with the mysterious liquid and literally births the new and improved Elizabeth Sparkle — known as Sue and played by Margaret Qualley — out of her spinal cord. The only rule for the body swap is that they must spend one week in one body and one week in the other with no exceptions. Needless to say, drama and shocks unfold in quick succession.

Toronto – The difficult journey of the couple at the center of “The Salt Path” doesn’t seem like a true story at first. There is a lyrical flow to their revelations. So much so that each stop on their 630-mile hike seems crafted as an allegory to how perilous life can be. Assuming you were unaware of Raynor Winn‘s best-selling autobiographical novel of the same name, the end cards may be something of a surprise.

It is a deceptively simple premise for a two-hour feature film. A married couple who had planned their retirement in a B&b are, due to dire financial circumstances and bum luck, forced out of their home at a point that is, on the surface at least, completely devastating. With their kids now off at school, they make the decision to pack up what they can in their backpacks and take off on the Salt Path, a 630-mile stretch from Dorset to Somerset on the Southwestern English Coast. To make matters worse, the husband has just been diagnosed with a terminal neurodegenerative disease, but they are bound and determined to complete this adventure, perhaps the last of their lives because they have no other choice.
Oh, and it is a 100% true story.
Exquisitely directed by four-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott with a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (She Said) based on Raynor Winn’s 2018 memoir, The Salt Path is an inspiring story of love and resilience in a situation that might otherwise break most people, especially a couple entering their later years with little hope against an unforgiving system. This is certainly not the first film based on someone setting out on an ambitious walk for various personal reasons. Martin Sheen starred as a man tackling El Camino de Santiago trail in 2010’s spiritual The Way; Reese Witherspoon played the depressed Cheryl Strayed in Wild, the 2014 true story of her 1100-mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail; and Mark Wahlberg starred in another true story, 2020’s Joe Bell, about a father who walks across America in protest of the bullying of his son.
All of these films, and other similar stories of determination against all odds, were admirable attempts but not always successful movies as sometimes dramatizing the journey can be a little repetitive. Where Elliott succeeds with a fine Lenkiewicz template, is getting us instantly engaged in the travails of Ray (Gillian Anderson) and Moth (Jason Isaacs), a couple who could be you or me as life hits them hard in the gut and the Salt Path becomes somehow a cure, a spiritual redemption however temporary, to set them on a new path (literally and figuratively) in life. Is it an adventure? Is it insanity or an existential mid-life crisis? In some ways, it is reminiscent of the premise of John Cheever’s The Swimmer and its film adaptation, in which Burt Lancaster swam from one neighbor’s pool to another, encountering various people along the way. But moreover, it is the tale of these two born to come together to experience life together, no matter how hard that gets.
After unreasonably being evicted from their B&b, having their bank account dried up due to legal expenses and losing their farm, this likable couple decides to fullfil a dream and live off the land as it were by embarking with just chump change on an ambitious walk covering 630 breathtaking miles, even as Moth has had a pretty devastating diagnosis. This might stop most people in their tracks, but in this case only sets this couple off in theirs.
The story from this point on becomes episodic as they make their way, stopping at various points and towns, interacting with the locals and relatives, bleeding an Atm dry just for enough to get food, and even for Ray getting a job shearing sheep. Nothing hugely life-threatening happens along the way, no sudden tidal wave or earthquakes, none of the usual movie tropes, but rather a love story of two people making the most of where life has brought them to this point. Of course to make this work, you need actors of the extraordinary grace and talent of Anderson and Isaacs who are entirely believable as this pair staring down nature as an antidote to the cards life has dealt. Both are excellent in essentially a two-hander, although they get support along the way from various people they meet or stay with.
With Helene Louvart’s excellent cinematography a real plus, The Salt Path is a cinematic journey worth taking. It had its world premiere Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival. Producers are Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley, Lloyd Levin and Beatriz Levin.

From the very first moments of the “The Salt Path,” frantically capturing the vestiges of one middle-aged couple’s life swept out to sea by a turbulent tide of saltwater and sorrow, director Marianne Elliott’s inspirational drama chooses a deliberately deceptive path and gets off on the wrong foot. It’s not until later that it’s discovered that this in-media-res attention grabber, which has shaded our view of these downtrodden souls’ transformative journey, is a distorted reality. It’s used to manipulate us into anticipating that their watershed moment will be dire, when it’s really their saving grace. Yet with understated performances from Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, as well as immersive land and soundscapes that enhance the thematic pull, this portrait of loss, humanity and rebirth makes it worth the emotional investment.

Emily Maitlis has now watched both Gillian Anderson and Ruth Wilson portray her onscreen in the space of just six months.
The former BBC Newsnight presenter is renowned in British journalism but to many around the globe, she might be more recognizable as the woman who sat down with a seemingly nervous Prince Andrew in 2019 to probe the royal family member on his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Prime Video’s A Very Royal Scandal, airing exclusively on Amazon on Sept. 19, follows the infamous interview, how it came to fruition, and the aftermath. The three-episode series — which, unlike Netflix, boasts Maitlis as executive producer — more closely follows the two characters at the heart of the story: a reporter intent on unearthing the truth in Maitlis and the late Queen’s second son, who finds himself desperate to broadcast his version of events and unwittingly further derails the public’s relationship with the monarchy.

When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 10, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. Here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

Exclusive: Movie producers in Hollywood and London would court three-time Tony-winning director Marianne Elliott and ask her what she wanted to do. She’d reply that what she really wanted to do was to film a story about an older woman who’s a protagonist. “They’d smile at me, and then I’d never hear from them again,” she says with a mischievous grin.
Let’s mark, then, The Salt Path — her film directorial debut, which was screened to press today at the Toronto Film Festival and will have its world premiere September 12 — as a win and a sock to those who rebuffed her efforts to tell stories about women who no longer are ingenues but something much more interesting: They’ve experienced and lived life.

"I was only ever hoping to ask the right questions..." Prime Video has revealed the first official trailer for a mini-series called A Very Royal Scandal, premiering for streaming later in September. This is another new cinematic take on the 2019 "interview that sent shockwaves around the globe." It's the same interview also featured in the Netflix film Scoop with Gillian Anderson earlier this year, and now we have a 3-episode series about it as well this fall. Follow Emily Maitlis journey as a News night journalist and Prince Andrew's disastrous interview with her. The story will examine the actions of Maitlis and Prince Andrew in the lead-up to the interview, the groundbreaking event itself, the questions left in its wake that changed lives forever. Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson star as Emily and Andrew, with Joanna Scanlan as Amanda Thirsk, Alex Jennings as Sir Edward Young, Éanna Hardwicke as Stewart Maclean,...

The latest Prince Andrew project has dropped trailer.
A Very Royal Scandal, which launches in a fortnight, stars Michael Sheen as the disgraced Prince with Ruth Wilson playing the role of his interviewer Emily Maitlis.
A Very Royal Scandal is a three-part TV series as opposed to Scoop, the Netflix feature that starred Rufus Sewell and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles. It is the third in the A Very… series that Amazon has previously co-produced with the BBC, although this one will only air on Prime Video. Unlike Scoop, Maitlis is involved with this one as an EP.
In the trailer, Wilson’s Maitlis can be seen pursuing the story that would make her a global household name and destroy the Prince’s reputation in a pivotal moment in British history, which saw him buckle under questions around his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and make a sea of humiliating utterances.

Since Olivia Colman is a Best Comedy Guest Actress Emmy nominee this year for “The Bear,” it’s a great time to look back to 2021, when “The Crown” swept the drama field for Best Series, directing, writing, and all four acting categories.
While most of the wins in the drama field were correctly predicted in our Gold Derby odds, the biggest surprise of the night was Colman winning Best Drama Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II on “The Crown” over co-star Emma Corrin, who was favored to win for their portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales. Colman was fourth in our odds, which made her the night’s biggest acting upset. So how did she win? Let’s look at five reasons why the actress pulled off a royal upset.

Coming a full 15 years after Tron: Legacy, next year’s Ares stands as one of the most anticipated movies of 2025. We still have well over a year before it hits the big screen, but Jared Leto is already hype for the Tron sequel, taking to Disneyland to ride the Tron Lightcycle / Run.
In a new Instagram post, Leto – who at the time was in Florida for a couple of stops on 30 Seconds to Mars’ Seasons Tour – is seen approaching the Tron ride and declaring, “We gotta go, we gotta do this, man. Holy sh*t! I feel like I’m home!” He also insisted on being on the front cycle, something fans of the ride say is well worth the wait. Judging by the clip, Leto had a pretty damn good time, although some followers did rib him for not taking his grip off the handlebars.

With more than a year until Tron: Ares hits theaters, Jared Leto appears to be homesick for his onscreen digital kingdom.

“When in Florida,” he captioned a video of the trip, adding: “Ps this ride goes pretty hard has anyone tried it?”
As he and a friend approached the ride, Leto declared, “We gotta do this, man. Holy s—, I feel like I’m home! … I gotta be in the front, man.”

The X-Files is an iconic sci-fi series that has become a touchstone in the history of television. Picture the scene. It’s November 2019, and I’m sitting in Buckingham Palace in England. I’m on an ornate golden chair, pushed up against the wall of the south drawing room, staring nervously at the slightly frayed but elegant red-and-gold carpeted floor. The room is larger than most London flats, and I’m just 15 feet behind the chair of the Queen’s “favorite son,” Prince Andrew. He’s seated with his back to me, his left foot tapping over and over on the palace floor.
In my line of sight is renowned BBC Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis, who is about to conduct the interview of her life about Prince Andrew’s friendship with prolific sex offender and trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and about the allegations of sexual assault made against him by Virginia Giuffre. It’s an interview that will effectively topple a prince. The atmosphere is electric. There’s...

When the actor asked women to share their erotic secrets for a new book, she found herself rethinking her own relationship with desire - and deciding to have more fun
• The sex files: read an extract from Anderson’s book
In the early stages of researching Want, a book about women’s sexual fantasies, the thing that shocked Gillian Anderson the most was the prevalence of shame. The book, which is based on My Secret Garden, the 1973 classic by Nancy Friday, is a compilation of anonymous letters by women sharing their sexual fantasies, and many of them, observed Anderson, still need permission to voice a desire – not just in public, but, “more shockingly, even in our private worlds”. To her amazement, the 56-year-old discovered she was not herself immune to this inhibition. Called upon to submit her own fantasy, Anderson says: “I kept putting it off and putting it off.

“The Crown” has always been a show beloved by Emmy voters. The Netflix period drama, which charts the backstage stories of the royal family, has won a whopping 21 Emmys across its first five seasons. That warm reception continued this year with its sixth and final outing.
“The Crown” season six reaped 18 Emmy nominations. This season retained Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret. Meanwhile, the series depicted several key events (as usual) including the death of Diana, the marriage of Charles and Camilla, and the premiership of Tony Blair.
But while the future could be an exciting end to the life of “The Crown,” let’s take a look, as the show does, at history. Below is a complete record of the Emmy record of “The Crown,” including all Creative Arts Emmys nominations.

Assuming no other streamer comes to its rescue, we have to accept that Evil, our pick for the best Paramount+ original series, is ending with its August 22 episode. The supernatural drama follows a trio — Katja Herbers’ forensic psychologist, Mike Colter’s priest, and Aasif Mandvi’s tech whiz — investigating demonic possessions, miracles, and other mysteries for the Catholic Church. The good news is that there are many other TV shows of its ilk to fill an Evil void. Here are ones that will leave you possessed — in a good way! 1. The X-Files A man who wants to believe? Check. Viewers discovering Homicide: Life on the Street, now streaming on Peacock, will note Det. John Munch’s (Richard Belzer) penchant for conspiracy theories. This may not have always been the case. The Baltimore murder cop may have gotten the bug while on duty at The X-Files for season 5’s “Unusual Suspects.” The flashback episode to the creation of the Lone Gunmen supplies origin stories to much of the science fiction series’ canon, including how Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) was initially infected with his unique brand of governmental paranoia.

Few people know the highs and lows of fandom experience quite like fans of "The X-Files." One of the hottest shows of the '90s was also one of the messiest, featuring retconned central mythology, a sizzling will-they-won't-they relationship that culminated mostly in vaguely implied hookups, and way too many Mulder-less latter season episodes. The show also features a surprisingly complicated release order, with two movies, a revival series, and one spinoffs.
When "The X-Files" fans reminisce about the show, they typically seem to be talking about the seven seasons that ran between 1993 and 2000, when David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully were on the hunt for aliens, monsters, and cigarette-smoking men week after week. But while it might be easier to cordon off the "simpler times" section of the show and call it canon, the fact remains that the official "X-Files" story doesn't end...

And the films just keeping on coming as the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival has announced 20 movies to its official selection, taking its count to 278 titles.

And you thought Harry Styles was big at TIFF two years ago? Well, here comes Jacob Elordi with Daisy Edgar-Jones in On Swift Horses. The pic also stars Diego Calva. The Daniel Minahan-directed movie follows a woman and her husband who are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of his brother. The Toronto Film Festival has made its final lineup announcement for its 2024 edition, to include a North American premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian epic Megalopolis and a world bow for Driven director Nick Hamm’s medieval action drama William Tell.
Both movies, including the Cannes-bowing Megalopolis, will get a Gala premiere at Roy Thomson Hall. William Tell, set in 1307 and adapting Friedrich Schiller’s play, stars Danish actor Claes Bang as huntsman Tell, Ben Kingsley as King Albrecht, Rafe Spall as Stauffacher and Jonathan Pryce as Attinghausen.
Toronto, which will feature in all 278 films for its 49th edition, has also booked Special Presentations slots for another 12 titles. That includes world premieres for Daniel Minahan’s period drama On Swift Horses, to star Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi and Will Poulter; John Maggio’s Paul Anka: His Way biopic; Max Minghella’s dark comedy Shell, starring Elisabeth Moss, Kate Hudson...

Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” have been added to the lineup of the Toronto International Film Festival, which made its final programming announcement on Tuesday before posting the 2024 schedule.
The films were part of a group of 19 titles that brought the total number of movies at this year’s festival to 276.
The wildly ambitious and excessive “Megalopolis,” starring Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel, was one of the most talked-about and most divisive titles at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. “The Room Next Door” is Almodovar’s first English-language feature, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore; it will premiere just prior to TIFF at the Venice Film Festival. “Queer” is Guadagnino’s adaptation of a 1985 William S. Burroughs novel, and another Venice premiere.
Other films added to the lineup include the world premieres of Nick Hamm’s “William Tell,...

Putting together best-of lists is both a pleasure and a pain — you are always going to “leave something out” or “forget about” one of the all-time greats, and even if you’re able to cull through every possible iteration and entry, ranking and rating the merit of anything in any artistic realm is bound to draw dissent. And, yes, we just keep doing it.
This summer, we’re all about the aughts. And what a time for on-screen performances, the kind that belong not only on this list, but any list of best-to-ever-do-it. In the early 2000s, we saw all manner of breakthroughs on the big screen, be it Javier Bardem burrowing into our collective nightmares or Adam Sandler continuing to proof his salt as a full-stop Great Dramatic Actor. Heath Ledger became our most chilling supervillain.

It will continue pushing boundaries with state-of-the-art visual effects. At D23, attendees got a first look at the film through its debut trailer and announcements about the cast and creative team.

In the absence of Tron: Legacy’s composers, the legendary Daft Punk, Tron: Ares has turned to Nine Inch Nails instead for its score.
While not everybody was a fan of 2010’s Tron: Legacy, the film certainly hit in one particular regard: its incredible score was the result of what seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime bit of creative coupling. The film, which is of course largely set inside inside a digital world, was scored by Daft Punk, the electronic house duo who spent their decades-long career masquerading as synthetic beings. At least we think it was a masquerade. Who knows, really?
Anyway, the collaboration led to an excellent soundtrack but more than a few impediments lay in the way of Daft Punk returning for a reprise. The duo are now all but retired, at least as Daft Punk, while according to the studio.

At its D23 fan event in Anaheim, California on Friday night, Walt Disney Studios unveiled a first, exclusive look at footage from Tron: Ares, the third entry in what is now officially the Tron film franchise—which wasn’t a foregone conclusion after Tron: Legacy underperformed back in 2010.
Following up on the ending of that film, in which the AI character Quorra (Olivia Wilde) escaped from the Grid into the real world with Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), Tron: Ares is leaning fully in that direction with the Grid itself invading our world through the machinations of the malevolent program known as Ares (Jared Leto).
Leto and fellow cast members Greta Lee and Evan Peters came onto the D23 stage before the footage was shown, joined somewhat surprisingly by Jeff Bridges, the original Kevin Flynn, who arrived first to warm up the crowd. Even more surprisingly, Bridges also shows up at the end of the footage.
