This is another one of these low-rent, junk thrillers being passed off as something true crime obsessed audiences of today might want to see. How long has it been since we've seen Freddie Prinze Jr. in anything? So he's back? Prinze Jr. stars as Tom, who "reflects on one final rendezvous with a woman he is having an affair with — shortly before that same woman is found dead in his pool. To complicate matters, Tom's wife and his family throw him a surprise birthday party in the same backyard. At the party, Tom's shock is noticed by those around him, including his father-in-law and a man who arrives at his home saying he is looking for his wife.

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. Quiver Distribution announced today that they have partnered with Blacktop International to launch sales on psychological thriller The Girl in the Pool, starring Freddie Prinze Jr (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scooby-Doo). The news comes with a first look image from the film.

Exclusive: Keir Gilchrist (Atypical) and Lucy Hale (The Hating Game) will topline Daniel André’s debut feature, Mort in Sherman Oaks—an offbeat romance that will also star Francesca Eastwood (Old), Jim Gaffigan (Linoleum), Jay Pharoah (SNL), Rhys Coiro (Paradise City) and more.

The film written by André is about a down-and-out mortician living in near-future Los Angeles, where individuals can receive their Ldc (life day count) by using a specific scientific method. When Mort (Gilchrist) finds out he has less than a year to live, his fiancé Nicole (Eastwood) leaves him and he’s forced to accept his fate. Mort joins a dating service that matches people by their death dates and meets Kate (Hale), all while being stalked by a deranged pimp named Simon (Coiro).

When “This Is Us” premiered in September 2016, “Parenthood” had been off the air for a little more than a year. Many dubbed Dan Fogelman’s new NBC family drama the heir apparent to Jason Katims’ critical darling, which was itself a successor to his NBC family drama “Friday Night Lights.” Some even mistakenly complimented Katims for his work on “This Is Us,” assuming it was his next big-hearted tearjerker. Of course, “This Is Us” wasn’t Katims’ project, but that wasn’t the only key difference between the two shows: “This Is Us” quickly became a ratings juggernaut, whereas “Parenthood” was never NBC’s top draw, and the large ensemble cast eventually took pay cuts in order to ensure a sixth and final season could happen.

So, a little lingering irritation is understandable, even in jest — like the quippy remarks made at “Parenthood’s” reunion panel Friday night, as part of the 2022 Atx TV Festival.

And while excited audience members relished hearing Dax Shephard, Erika Christensen, Joy Bryant, and Monica Potter share memories, Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, and Mae Whitman were certainly missed.

Among the highlights was insight from Katims as to how the 1989 film of the same from Ron Howard and the series Friday Night Lights played a role in Parenthood‘s inception.

“I was very much inspired by Friday Night Lights in thinking about what the show could be,” Katims, who executive produced the sports drama, shared. “One thing I was enjoying about Friday Night Lights was the big ensemble cast—many, many people with different points of view. So I thought, ‘What if I did a show like that focusing on family and extended family?...

Exclusive: The Falcon And The Winter Soldier actor Wyatt Russell is to star in and executive-produce new action podcast series Classified.

Created by producer-writer-director duo Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (Distant), Russell will star as “Ivan” alongside Brent Jennings (All American), Monica Potter (Parenthood), Oliver Cooper (Mindhunter), Angela Sarafyan (Caged), Edwin Hodge (The Tomorrow War), Dohn Norwood (Mindhunter), Holland Roden (Mayans M.C.), Eugene Lee Yang (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Kyle Kinane (Paradise Pd).

QCode and Automatik will executive-produce along with Russell and Cohen and Halberg, who will also serve as writers and directors for the series.

Classified follows Ivan, who arrives at the mysterious Ravenholm Institute to be treated when Lark, the voice in his head, says he can help Ivan break out. He and Lark then organize the other eclectic patients to escape and take down Doctor Bell, the shadowy woman in charge of their “recovery.”

Netflix has released the official trailer for Iliza Shlesinger‘s latest comedy special, “Unveiled,“ premiering Nov. 19. In the special, Shlesinger dishes newly-wed lifestyle, wedding planning and the dangers of a zombie bachelorette army. The special will be Shlesinger’s fifth Netflix original.

Atx Television Festival has announced its first wave of programming for its ninth year. Following the success of past reunions for “Gilmore Girls,” “The West Wing,” and “Battlestar Galactica,” the Atx TV Festival is readying multiple anniversary panels for its 2020 lineup, along with more special screenings and industry-focused discussions.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of its premiere, the “Parenthood” gang is getting back together, including cast members Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen, Mae Whitman, and Craig T. Nelson. Creator and executive producer Jason Katims, long a fan-favorite at the Austin-based festival for his role in “Friday Night Lights,” is also scheduled to participate in the panel with fellow writer and E.P. David Hudgins. In addition to a conversation about the series’ enduring legacy, the cast will perform a live script reading of one of the series’ episodes.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher will replace Monica Potter as the lead of Netflix’s upcoming romantic drama “Sweet Magnolias,” a Netflix spokesperson told TheWrap on Thursday.

Swisher joins previously announced stars Brooke Elliott (“Drop Dead Diva”) and Heather Headley (“Chicago Med’s”) on the 10-episode show, which is based on a book series by Sherryl Woods about three women who have been best friends since childhood in the fictional charming small town of Serenity, South Carolina. Jamie Lynn Spears was also cast on the drama.

The “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” alum will play Maddie Townsend (the role was originally given to Potter), who Netflix describes as “a low-key but resolute, warm and loving woman with a vocabulary like Southern poetry.
