Just beneath the surface of placid, prosperous neighborhoods, lies can fester into betrayal and violence born of resentment or lust. Such is the backdrop of Dakota Gorman’s darkly comic thriller, The Girl in the Pool.
Gorman takes the reins of a story simmering with domestic tensions. In his affluent but passionless marriage, Freddie Prinze Jr. portrays Tom, a man concealing hurts on all sides. As he hides more than infidelity from his wife Kristen, played with steely poise by Monica Potter, a perfect life cracks under hidden pressures.
Before the film grants clues to its mysteries, Tom’s world tilts sideways at a birthday party gone wrong. With guests arriving and a dead woman stowed nearby, one man’s deceptions were imperial. And so the film invites us in as cracks widen between neighbors, masking storms beneath smiling exteriors.

“The Girl in the Pool” is a laugh riot, delivering sitcom-style shenanigans rather than a sincere sense of tension. Whether it’s intended to be funny or not is debatable. Director Dakota Gorman’s Hitchcock-inspired, psychological thriller about marital infidelity and a fracturing family takes a few of its cues from “Rope,” hiding a key figure in a trunk as a party transpires and a mystery murderer remains in their midst. But the similarities end there. Regardless of whether we’re supposed to chuckle at our hero’s crumbling sanity or empathize with his strife, it’s empty-calorie viewing designed for viewers to either mock or embrace its hijinks. Those who do celebrate its tawdry twists and turns, however, are assured to have a good time.

"So what kinda gal are you lookin' for?" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an awkward romantic comedy movie called Running on Empty, being released this summer starting in August (eventually on VOD later in August). Marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Daniel André, this was originally titled Mort in Sherman Oaks before the new title change, since it's set in the San Fernando Valley. The film follows an odd young man named Mort who discovers he has less than a year to live. After hearing the news, his fiancé leaves him, then he meets Kate using a dating service that matches people by their death dates, all while being stalked by a disturbed pimp. Definitely sounds kooky! Mort sets out on a spirited quest to find meaning in his existence and hopefully the girl of his dreams along the way. The film stars Keir Gilchrist, Lucy Hale,...

"Just stop and admit to my daughter what you're really upset about." Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for an indie thriller titled The Girl in the Pool, directed by Dakota Gorman. This is another one of these low-rent, junk thrillers being passed off as something true crime obsessed audiences of today might want to see. How long has it been since we've seen Freddie Prinze Jr. in anything? So he's back? Prinze Jr. stars as Tom, who "reflects on one final rendezvous with a woman he is having an affair with — shortly before that same woman is found dead in his pool. To complicate matters, Tom's wife and his family throw him a surprise birthday party in the same backyard. At the party, Tom's shock is noticed by those around him, including his father-in-law and a man who arrives at his home saying he is looking for his wife.

Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left is regarded by many as a classic of the horror genre, and by others as one of the most vile films committed to celluloid. The 1972 film remained blacklisted in the UK, where it was banned for nearly 30 years (finally seeing an uncut release in 2008). In 2006 Rogue Pictures made the shock announcement that Craven had agreed to produce a remake of his film. At the time, many people, myself included, were worried that any remake would have to be watered down for modern audiences – especially when the majority of horror remakes at the time were being released as PG-13. When “This Is Us” premiered in September 2016, “Parenthood” had been off the air for a little more than a year. Many dubbed Dan Fogelman’s new NBC family drama the heir apparent to Jason Katims’ critical darling, which was itself a successor to his NBC family drama “Friday Night Lights.” Some even mistakenly complimented Katims for his work on “This Is Us,” assuming it was his next big-hearted tearjerker. Of course, “This Is Us” wasn’t Katims’ project, but that wasn’t the only key difference between the two shows: “This Is Us” quickly became a ratings juggernaut, whereas “Parenthood” was never NBC’s top draw, and the large ensemble cast eventually took pay cuts in order to ensure a sixth and final season could happen.
So, a little lingering irritation is understandable, even in jest — like the quippy remarks made at “Parenthood’s” reunion panel Friday night, as part of the 2022 Atx TV Festival.

Part of the cast of Parenthood reunited with series creator Jason Katims and executive producer Lawrence Trilling on Friday night at the Atx Festival in Austin.
And while excited audience members relished hearing Dax Shephard, Erika Christensen, Joy Bryant, and Monica Potter share memories, Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, and Mae Whitman were certainly missed.
Among the highlights was insight from Katims as to how the 1989 film of the same from Ron Howard and the series Friday Night Lights played a role in Parenthood‘s inception.
“I was very much inspired by Friday Night Lights in thinking about what the show could be,” Katims, who executive produced the sports drama, shared. “One thing I was enjoying about Friday Night Lights was the big ensemble cast—many, many people with different points of view. So I thought, ‘What if I did a show like that focusing on family and extended family?...

When the Emmy nominations were announced in July, one of the biggest snubs was the omission of “Better Call Saul” lead Bob Odenkirk, this after nominations for the previous four seasons of the series. Also criminally snubbed was his onscreen partner Rhea Seehorn.
The two have delivered some of the most acclaimed and layered performances on television. The fifth season saw Jimmy and Kim get entangled in the workings of a drug cartel as their relationship faced new challenges and opportunities. Now, with Golden Globe nominations looming, they both have a chance at awards redemption.
There is precedent for Emmy snubs to be honored at the Globes. Last cycle, in the drama actor category, Brian Cox scored a nom for “Succession” after missing out at the Emmys. Cox won the Globe and then got an Emmy nomination in July. However, the Globe win and Emmy nom were for the same...

JoAnna Garcia Swisher will replace Monica Potter as the lead of Netflix’s upcoming romantic drama “Sweet Magnolias,” a Netflix spokesperson told TheWrap on Thursday.
Swisher joins previously announced stars Brooke Elliott (“Drop Dead Diva”) and Heather Headley (“Chicago Med’s”) on the 10-episode show, which is based on a book series by Sherryl Woods about three women who have been best friends since childhood in the fictional charming small town of Serenity, South Carolina. Jamie Lynn Spears was also cast on the drama.
The “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” alum will play Maddie Townsend (the role was originally given to Potter), who Netflix describes as “a low-key but resolute, warm and loving woman with a vocabulary like Southern poetry. She finds herself at a crossroads in her life and her best friends are trying desperately to convince her that now is the time for reinvention.”
