Lo, the enduring miracle of the film awards year. Just when things begin to look hopeless—and it was looking pretty bleak a month ago—intriguing, maybe even watchable, prospects suddenly sprout. The movies are like Osiris, that old Egyptian resurrection god: You just can’t keep ‘em down.
As August arrives, more than a few adult viewers, unattuned to the ongoing fantasy-and-animation boom, are now peeking around the corner at Saturday Night, Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live origins story. The film was scheduled last week by Columbia Pictures for release on Oct. 11—the 49th anniversary of NBC’s first SNL broadcast, back in 1975.
As historical moments go, that may or may not impress the film Academy’s growing body of foreign-based Oscar voters. But for the domestic crowd, especially those in upper age brackets, the birth of an American comedy phenomenon, still alive some five decades later, is compelling.

Bob Newhart, the comedian and actor whose deadpan manner and laconic approach led to a series of best-selling comedy albums and starring roles in two long-running sitcoms, died Thursday at the age of 94.
Newhart’s longtime publicist confirmed the TV icon’s death in a statement, adding that Newhart died at his home in Los Angeles after “a series of short illnesses.”
Understated in his delivery and physically small of stature—he looked like the former accountant that he was–Newhart nonetheless left a sizable footprint on comedy. His first album,...

President Jimmy Carter was asked to pick his favorite Beatles song, and he chose a song from John Lennon’s solo career. The former president discussed how much the tune in question affected audiences around the globe. John once said some listeners didn’t understand the tune’s message.
President Jimmy Carter likes a John Lennon song that’s against nationalism
During a 2007 interview with The News–Times, Carter was asked to name his favorite Beatles song. The song in question was not actually a Beatles tune, but it fits in with the band’s hippie image. “My favorite is ‘Imagine,'” he said. “When I go to a strange country, Cuba and other places, in some of those nations, ‘Imagine’ has become a national anthem. If you go to Havana, for instance, you’ll see a statue of John Lennon.” Carter was referring to Lennon Park in Cuba.

Don Murray, the venturesome actor who earned an Oscar nomination for playing a rodeo cowboy smitten by Marilyn Monroe in Bus Stop, then spurned Hollywood’s attempts to mold him, has died. He was 94.
Murray’s son Christopher announced his dad’s death to The New York Times without providing details.
The actor was also known for the interesting parts he went after in such serious films as A Hatful of Rain (1957), The Hoodlum Priest (1961) and Advise & Consent (1962).
Fresh off a starring role in a 1955 Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, Murray was sought by director Joshua Logan to portray Bo Decker, the naive Montana man who falls for the chanteuse Chérie (Monroe), in Bus Stop (1956). It was his first movie, and he was 26 at the time.

In early January, comedian Katt Williams went on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast and took aim at Cedric the Entertainer for stealing “my very best joke.” The bit in question — which involved a pantomime of driving with music blasting — was first performed by Katt in a 1998 appearance on ComicView, then reproduced by Cedric (according to Katt) for his set in Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric called the accusations “revisionist history” on Instagram.
We’ve been down this road many times before. For much of the 20th century, joke stealing was an open secret. “All comedians steal from all comedians,” the legend Stan Laurel once mused. Richard Pryor did more than reinvent comedy, he changed culture, and not only in America. The five-time Grammy Award-winner, actor, writer, director, and standup icon underwent a series of self-discoveries which he revealed to audiences from the inside out long before co-writing Blazing Saddles, and conquering every aspect of showbiz. He did it without compromise. Listeners can study the growing genius of his most transformative years, 1968 through 1973, on newly remastered vinyl reissues of Pryor’s early live albums released through Stand Up! Records along with Omnivore Records and Pryor’s production company Indigo. Richard Pryor (1968), ‘Craps’ (After Hours) (1971), and the vinyl debut of Live At The Comedy Store, 1973, along with the bonus material, shows the artist’s evolution into a revolutionary force.

If J.B Smoove had it his way, he’d cast himself as the lead in a biopic about the late comedian Dick Gregory. “In another world, another life, if I was 20 years younger, I would love to play that man,” says the Emmy-winning actor and stand-up comic. “He really had an amazing, fascinating life.”
Smoove (né Jerry Brooks) did a deep dive on Gregory’s life when he narrated the six-part Audible Originals podcast Funny My Way, uncovering the lives of six Black comedy legends: Gregory, Flip Wilson, Paul Mooney, Moms Mabley, Rudy Ray Moore and Redd Foxx. His performance has earned the Curb Your Enthusiasm star an Ambie nomination for best podcast host.

For James Baldwin, leaving the United States was a matter of survival. “I didn’t know what was going to happen to me in France, but I knew what was going to happen to me in New York,” the writer said in a 1984 Paris Review interview. Despair pervaded the streets of Harlem, where the towering literary figure was born and raised. It appeared in the struggle to make a living, to secure housing and to dodge the hawkish gaze and brute force of police officers. In 1946, two years before Baldwin made his way to Paris with 40 dollars in his pocket, his best friend killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge. Moving out of the city — out of a country that insisted he was nothing — was his only chance at a life.

On the surface, biting jokes can generate laughter. They can also cut deeper in meaning and impact as seen in Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution. An upcoming two-part A&e documentary chronicles the evolution and social awakening of black comedians over decades. These fearless entertainers have used and continue to use their respective stages to take a stand and shine a light on atrocities of the time and racial stereotypes, possibly sparking change in the process. Executive produced by Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions and Time Studios, viewers are taken on a journey through history from the early days from the likes of comic turned civil rights activist Dick Gregory and character performer Moms Mabley right to those who carried the torch since. Rain Pryor, daughter of another pioneer Richard Pryor, was happy to participate alongside family and top industry names to further bring awareness of what her dad and others have done.

Almost three months after the Oscars, Will Smith’s on-stage slap of Chris Rock continues to spark a discussion.
Asked what the Oscar smack means for the future safety of comedians during a panel Thursday at Tribeca Festival, Alonzo Bodden said he isn’t worried.
“I’m not going to get slapped on stage,” he said. “That (Will Smith slap) is the ultimate outlier situation. At the comedy clubs, we are still talking and still doing comedy, so nobody is going to a club and worried about that happening.”
Meanwhile, comedian-host-director W. Kamau Bell claimed a Black Carrot Top could never exist.
“You can be a white comedian and never talk about what’s going on in the world,” Bell told the audience. “But it’s pretty hard to be a Black comedian and never talk about what’s going on in the world without the crowd being like ‘Where’s this dude from?...

Editor’s note: Colman Domingo is one of many Black actors whose careers were inspired by Sidney Poitier who broke racial barriers to become Hollywood’s first Black movie star and the first Black man to win Best Actor Oscar. In an essay for Deadline following Poitier’s death at age 94, Domingo writes about his meeting with Poitier and about the profound impact that encounter — as well as Poitier’s life and career — have had on him.

In the 21st century, it seems that a near-unlimited supply of entertainment is at our fingertips, or at least at the click of a mouse. That flow seems constant with a staggering variety of options. But what did folks do around 75 years ago? Sure, radio was still dominant, though this new “gizmo” called television was making inroads. And of, course the movies were there. As for live entertainment, many performers played at regional venues like state fairs and auditoriums. If you were looking for something more intimate, the big cities had nightclubs. It’s very early to be talking about documentary contenders for next year’s Emmys, but The One and Only Dick Gregory certainly should be part of the conversation.
The film written and directed by Andre Gaines at last gives the late Gregory his rightful due—as one of the most significant figures in the history of comedy, a hero in the Civil Rights Movement and a pioneer in nutrition, health and wellness. It’s hard to separate each of the areas where Gregory made an impact, because they all sprang from a common impulse, to redeem America from its savage racism and to help his fellow human beings.
“It was within the first five minutes of meeting him that I was confident and assured in my belief that I needed to tell his story myself,” Gaines tells Deadline. “And that belief and confidence and the enthusiasm for it just built continuously over time.

From Tribeca: "Dick Gregory was an icon for Black America. Showtime Documentary Films has acquired the rights to “The One and Only Dick Gregory,” the directorial debut from producer Andre Gaines.
The documentary, premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 19 and debuting on Showtime on July 4, explores the career of Dick Gregory, the legendary comedian and activist who was at the forefront of the fight for civil rights.
Gaines and his team amassed more than 300 hours of archival footage of Gregory, whose own voice bookends the documentary. Work on it began prior to his death in 2017 of heart failure, and it will show his early career as a comedian as well as the impact of his work as a self-described “agitator.” “The One and Only Dick Gregory” features interviews with Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Wanda Sykes, W. Kamau Bell and more, along with original music from Black Thought.

Andre Brown was leaving his sister’s house on Memorial Day when he misjudged the location of a railing and fell down a flight of stairs. A friend jumped over the railing to prevent the 56-year-old from hitting his head. While Brown damaged his right ankle, he laughed off the unfortunate slip as just another embarrassing moment.
Yet the accident would kickstart a dangerous new phase of his life. A doctor who was treating his ankle noticed an infection forming and told Brown to go to the hospital. “The infection...

With a Republican president running for re-election, leading Black activists and artists assemble to map out political challenges and to demand representation from the two major parties. The year in question, however, is 1972, as a new 4K restoration of William Greaves’ documentary “Nationtime” arrives in virtual theaters via Kino Marquee.
Filmed at the 1972 National Black Political Convention in Gary, Indiana (and unseen at its complete length for decades), this documentary captures a specific moment in time and a political struggle that continues to this day. The war in Vietnam may be long finished, but the governmental clout of corporations that profit off the subjugation of poor communities of color remains as strong today as it ever was.
Assembled as a response to having Black issues overlooked by both parties in an election year, the convention sought to establish a national unity platform in advance of the 1972 Republican and Democratic conventions.

"We are a mighty nation!!" Kino Lorber has revealed a trailer for a long lost, finally-found-and-restored documentary film from 1972 titled Nationtime. The film, made by acclaimed Black filmmaker William Greaves, is a report on the National Black Political Convention held in Gary, In in 1972, a historic event that gathered a powerful selection of Black voices from across the political spectrum, among them Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Coretta Scott King, Richard Hatcher, Amiri Baraka, Charles Diggs, and H. Carl McCall. A cut down 60-minute version aired on TV years ago. The original version was found in a Pittsburgh warehouse in 2018, restoring the film to its original 80-minute length and colorful visual quality 48 years after the convention took place. It's narrated by Sidney Poitier, combined with poems recited by Harry Belafonte. Bobby Seale said at the Convention, "Revolution is about the right for the humanity of Black people in this country here...

Best known for his avant-garde meta-documentary “Symbiopsychotaxiplasm,” pioneering award-winning documentarian of Black history, culture, and politics, the late William Greaves directed over 100 films. However, his library of work still remains largely undiscovered in the mainstream, partly due to availability and access.
One such film is “Nationtime,” a documentary on the 1972 National Black Political Convention. The film was considered too radical for television broadcast at the time and has since only existed in an edited 60-minute version. But thanks to a new 4K restoration from IndieCollect, the film has been returned to its original 80-minute length, which Kino Lorber will release later this month. The film’s resurgence couldn’t be more timely, as the U.S. heads into a rather significant election against the backdrop of racial justice protests.

The 1965 March on Washington was a galvanizing moment for the American civil-rights movement of the ‘60s, but in terms of media coverage of American race relations of that era, it happened in the middle of almost daily news reports, public interest programming and lively — sometimes incendiary — radio and television interviews and discussions.
The Feb. 18, 1965, debate between acclaimed novelist James Baldwin and noted magazine editor/pundit William F. Buckley was especially significant because it featured two articulate speakers addressing centuries-old problems and the challenges to a solution — it’s the history of the civil-rights struggle distilled to a one-hour, one-on-one exchange.
The Cambridge Union Society, observing its 150th anniversary, invited Baldwin and Buckley to debate “Has the American Dream Been Achieved at the Expense of the American Negro?”
The result is significant because of its historic interest, but even more so because it’s so alarmingly contemporary. The March on Washington...

Tiffany Haddish and John Mulaney met as young comics at the Improv in Los Angeles and have shared a mutual admiration ever since. Both are previous Emmy Award winners; Haddish for hosting “Saturday Night Live” and Mulaney for writing a song for “SNL” and his standup special “John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City.” Now the pair find themselves going head-to-head in the variety special (pre-recorded) category — Haddish for her Netflix standup special “Black Mitzvah” and Mulaney for the same streamer’s “John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch,” which also scored him a nod in the variety writing category.
At the peak of their careers, the two took time to talk to Variety about the state of comedy today, casting Jake Gyllenhaal and how a fake penis helped Haddish find her voice.

Director Bryan Forbes tries his hand at comedy. His nostalgic Victorian farce features an eclectic choice of Brit stars — established greats John Mills & Ralph Richardson, the freshly-minted Michael Caine, reigning jester Peter Sellers and even a debut for the collegiate pranksters Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. It’s a beaut of a production with a charming John Barry music score… but the result yields more indulgent smiles than out-and-out laughs.

As wisecracking J.J. Evans on the hit 1970s sitcom Good Times, Jimmie Walker swept the nation with his catchphrase "Dyn-o-mite!" But in his mind, he never became a superstar. "People think it happened to me, but it didn’t," he exclusively told Closer Weekly in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now. "People knew who I was, but they knew who Charlie Manson was. Please, I’ll call you when I’m a superstar. I’ll say, 'Hey, remember me? Goodbye!'" Perhaps it’s this kind of humility that keeps Jimmie working so hard at 71. He still tours the country as a stand-up comic and recently released a special, We Are Still Here — available on Amazon, iTunes, and other platforms — with Police Academy sound-effects specialist Michael Winslow. The title "means, despite what some people in the industry are saying — you’re too old or out of style — we’re still here,...

Hopes were high for the big screen debut of Ray Fisher’s character Victor Stone (also known as Cyborg) in Justice League – but, when the movie proved to be something of a disappointment, and Cyborg in particular felt somewhat under-used, the spinoff for the character that Warner Bros. has long had planned for 2020 seemed less than guaranteed. Now, however, a central figure in that potential storyline – actor Joe Morton – has given an update on the project, and seems to be expecting the Cyborg movie to go ahead as planned.
Morton has a three-picture deal with Warner Bros. and DC, to play Dr. Silas Stone – father of Cyborg. He’s already played that role in two DC Universe movies – Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Justice League – and the Cyborg pic was expected to be the third. As far as the actor is concerned, that apparently remains the case.

No awards show’s “In Memoriam” segment can include everyone lost in the last year, but this year’s Emmys contained some obvious omissions, including comedy icon and Civil Rights activist Dick Gregory, “Chappelle’s Show” star Charlie Murphy, Erin Moran and Harry Dean Stanton — who died Friday. Stanton is somewhat understandable, given how recently he died — there might not have been time to update the segment before the show. The same is true of “Sopranos” star Frank Vincent, who died last week. But many on Twitter were surprised and disappointed by the other omissions. Some drew a contrast between the omission.

The events of the last several weeks, while horrible, raise several issues that affect us not only as citizens, but as creative people and fans of the popular arts.
How do we respond to racism and other forms of bigotry in our government. Do we cooperate and try to change the minds of the people in power? Do we quit and make a statement? Do we resist? Do we perform non-violent acts of civil disobedience and fill the jails?
In my life, I’ve advocated (and disagreed with) all of these things. Different times in my life, different circumstances, different perspectives. Therefore, I hesitate to call out people who make different choices than I do, as long as we share the goals of a fair and just, egalitarian, non-hateful non-violent society.
