Ed Tomney is a composer, synthesist and musician/artist based in New York. He has scored for feature film, dance, radio, television, theater, advertising and has performed as a multi-instrumentalist on numerous recordings and releases. His work in composition and acoustic-art involves site-specific sound installations and performances in museums and galleries throughout the world ("Sinfonia 60," "Sophisticated Filters," "Ecotype Transmissions," "Whispering Elms," "In a Perfect World," "The Mechanical Guitar Orchestra").
He scored the Peter Berg series "Wonderland" for Touchstone/ABC; the David Lynch/Mark Frost series "American Chronicles" for Fox; "Discover Magazine" series for the Discovery Channel; "The Elegant Universe," "Fabric of the Cosmos" & "The Bible's Buried Secrets" series for NOVA/PBS as well as various science, history and documentary specials for The History Channel, PBS, National Geographic & Discovery channels.
Film scores include the Todd Haynes feature "Safe" for Sony Pictures Classics (soundtrack released on Mute Records IONIC 14CD), "When The Bough Breaks" directed by Michael Cohn, source music contributions for Oliver Stone's "JFK," "Persons Unknown" directed by George Hickenlooper and Tamra Davis' directorial debut "Guncrazy".
A few selections from his early indie film scores consist of "Ultraviolet," "Johnny 2.0," "Running Still," "Mute Love," "Amnesia," "Sweet Underground," "Liquid Dreams" and "Getting Off." A partial list from his mid-period work comprises the following films: "Spin The Bottle" and "Bobby G. Can't Swim" for Cineblast, "Garmento" for Spanish Moss Productions, "The Pagans" for Cineblast/Luma, the Brett C. Leonard feature "Jailbait" for Belladonna Productions, "Exit 8A" for premier at Sundance, "Nicky's Game" and "Off Jackson Avenue" for Cineblast/TGE.
In addition to film and broadcast projects, he has also scored commercials in Europe for clients such as Federal Express, Mercedes-Benz, Barclays Bank, KPN, Suzuki, Stella Artois, VW, Ford Motors and The United Nations ("Spoons" PS ad).
Recent documentary scores include "How To Find Your Dragon" for Dreamworks, the 3-part science series "Building Wonders of the World" for NOVA/PBS and a biography of composer Wayne Shorter titled "Zero Gravity" for Brave World Pictures. In 2019 he received an EMMY nomination for outstanding music/score for the 4-part series "Native America" broadcast on PBS.
