The coronation of King Charles III on Saturday had all manner of bizarre rituals and moments, but perhaps one of the weirdest was revealed on Sunday night when the newly minted British monarch and his wife Queen Camilla made an appearance on American Idol.
In a pre-taped segment, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry had called into the latest episode of Idol to explain their absence as they were in London performing at Sunday’s The Coronation Concert in celebration of Charles acceding to the throne. Speaking to Idol host Ryan Seacrest, Richie and Perry appeared to be in a grand room inside Windsor Castle, where the concert took place.
Charles and Camilla then wander into the shot and rather awkwardly ask when Richie and Perry would be finished using the room they were filming the segment.

Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Tom Cruise led the American contingent joining a list of international artists performing at the UK’s first ever Coronation Concert on Sunday evening.
Katy Perry referenced her close links with the King, the pair working together on the Prince’s Asian Trust, while Lionel Richie was the first ever global ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, which has been helping young people for over five decades.
King Charles, Queen Camilla and other royal family members took their seats to watch the stars perform on a specially constructed golden stage at Windsor Castle.
Despite the A-list lineup, arguably the most dazzling part of the night came with an aerial lightshow, powered by drones, highlighting the natural world, while Alexis Ffrench sang Simple Minds’ anthem ‘Don’t You Forget About Me.’

More star power is being added to the upcoming concert following the coronation of King Charles III.
Previous reports indicated that a bevy of big-name British musical acts — including Adele, Harry Styles, Sir Elton John, the Spice Girls and Ed Sheeran — turned down the opportunity to perform at the Coronation Concert. As a result, the show will feature a roster of decidedly non-British acts, including Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Andrea Bocelli.
Now, more information is emerging about the concert, with Variety reporting that Tom Cruise, Winnie the Pooh, Nicole Scherzinger and others will also be part of the festivities.

At the beginning of 2022, Spotify shut down an internal studio that had been used to produce some of its original podcasts. 12 months later, the streaming service is promoting a different kind of Spotify studio: A fully-equipped production shop within the walls of its Los Angeles office.
Spotify laid out the creator-facing perks of its “At Mateo” facility in a post on its For The Record blog. The office is described as a “state-of-the-art music- and podcast-recording facility” filled with studios, lounges, and musical memorabilia. Visitors to the space can check out an amp used by the Stone Temple Pilots and a piano Norah Jones used to record her hit single ‘Don’t Know Why’.
Some artists have already visited this “vibey, comfortable, well-equipped recording studio,” as described by Spotify Senior Music Producer/Studio Development Lead William Garrett. Indie darlings Japanese Breakfast, Eurovision winners Kalush Orchestra, and classical pianist Lang Lang...

“The Lion King” is on track to become one of the most successful Disney live-action titles in China, according to local projections. In its Chinese debut Friday, a week ahead of its U.S. premiere, the film brought in $13.4 million (RMB92.6 million) by early evening, including midnight screenings. That already exceeds “Toy Story 4’s” three-day debut total of $13.2 million, with the weekend and family crowds yet to come.
While strong, the first-day figures did not hit the heights that might have been expected, given the film’s almost complete lack of competition this weekend in China. With the lineup of local movies decimated by Chinese censors, “The Lion King’s” only real challenger is holdover Hong Kong title “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords.” The other new titles opening this weekend are two Japanese animated films and local drama “The Rookies.” The July 5 release of Huayi Brothers’ anticipated blockbuster,...

Disney’s The Lion King will take pride of place this weekend in China where it’s bowing ahead of the rest of the world. With anticipation and a clear runway for the opening, the CGI/live-action adaptation of the 1994 classic is poised for a $50 million-$60 million three-day bow, per industry projections. The Middle Kingdom debut could notch higher, depending on where the social scores land.
Previews began tonight local time with about $500,000. As this isn’t seen as a front-loaded picture, the numbers are not indicative of the full frame which is likely to skew to families. Again, a lot depends on word of mouth.
The original Lion King (which has a 9 on reviews aggregator Douban) was the highest-grossing animated film for some years in the Middle Kingdom, having made just $5M through its run. There is high awareness for the upcoming title and reaction to the trailers has been positive.

Two of eight-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard’s three 2018 scores involved ballet and led to collaborations with high-profile artists from the concert world. Former L.A. Philharmonic music director Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted Howard’s ballet music for “Red Sparrow,” while current Phil director Gustavo Dudamel conducted his score for “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” with acclaimed artist Lang Lang at the piano.
“Red Sparrow,” the thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian ballerina-turned-spy, demanded an opening 12-minute ballet that was “distinctly Russian sounding,” with harmonies and melodic gestures reminiscent of 20th-century Soviet composers. Howard is no stranger to classical writing, having recently recorded a violin concerto and he is currently writing a cello concerto to debut next year.
He was on Disney’s “Nutcracker” for two years. “The trick with ‘Nutcracker’ was figure out how much, and where, we could the Tchaikovsky – using as much as we possibly...
