The "Resident Evil" video game franchise is vast and complicated and has more entries than even its most hardcore fans might be aware of. As a compliment to the games' expansive pop culture presence, they have also been adapted into seven live-action feature films, four animated feature films, and two TV shows. The most recent "Resident Evil" adaptation was the high-budget, high-profile Netflix TV series that was released on July 14, 2022. Viewership was middling, reviews were warm, and the series was swiftly canceled after only eight episodes. While the series was wild and weird -- like the games -- it didn't find a good focal point, spreading its story over two timelines that didn't always organically intersect.
Half of "Resident Evil" took place in 2036, years after a viral infection leaked out into the world, creating zombie hoards, giant mutant animals, and the collapse of society; only 300 million humans remain alive on the planet.

Sometimes tragedy begets opportunity. Case in point: Henry Selick’s The Shadow King being unceremoniously scrapped by Pixar. It was supposed to be his follow-up to Coraline and buzz was strong before things went south. So while Selick took a creative step away in the aftermath, he found Key and Peele debuting on Comedy Central. The director would ultimately finish its five-season run and declare Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele the “boldest, bravest, and funniest” comedy duo of his lifetime, vowing to reach out and broach the subject of collaboration in the future. While that inevitable meeting’s purpose was to enlist their vocal talents, Peele turned the tables to ask if he might also produce whatever Selick did next. And there in the drawer sat Wendell & Wild.

It’s been a long time since writer/director Henry Selick has graced audiences with a spooky, stop-motion animated feature. More precisely, it’s been almost thirty years since he helmed the beloved classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s been thirteen years since his last effort, Coraline, a gateway horror movie for many. Selick finally makes his long-awaited return with Wendell & Wild, a collaboration with Jordan Peele that matches the revelry and family spirit of Nightmare but with an edgier and darker style.
The story, co-written with Peele, opens with a tragic sequence that leaves our protagonist Kat Elliot (Lyric Ross) an orphan at eight. Cut to five years later, where a much harder and more troubled Kat gets deposited at a Catholic school in her hometown of Rust Bank for a tax credit. It isn’t just Kat that’s gone through turbulent times, but the entire town...

In one of the best collaborations of all time, we’re getting a new film from the director of the incredible stop-motion animated Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, this time starring Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael-Key as demon brothers in Wendell & Wild.
Peele just dropped a new trailer for the film, which is coming to Netflix.
This classic macabre art style is the signature of the legendary director Henry Selick, who hasn’t released a film since Coraline in 2009. It wasn’t for lack of trying, as Selick recently said he had been working on two films for Disney that were canceled after other stop-motion animations made middling box-office returns.
Selick first pitched this film to Peele while he was establishing his company Monkeypaw productions, and the first meeting even took place before Peele had shot his acclaimed debut, Get Out. They eventually secured support from Netflix which...

Henry Selick is a one-of-a-kind filmmaker. In the world of stop-motion animation, he's in a league of his own as the acclaimed director behind greats like "James and the Giant Peach" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas." After a 13-year gap, Selick is returning this year with his first film since 2009's "Coraline," the Neil Gaiman adaptation that scarred a few kids for life but mostly, enchanted them with dreams of another world. This time around, Selick is adapting the words of a book that he penned himself, alongside Clay McLeod Chapman ("The Boy"): Their highly anticipated Netflix fantasy film "Wendell & Wild" will arrive on our screens in October, just in time for spooky season.
If you're about the right age, then you probably remember the wonder and terror of seeing "Coraline" for the first time. Well, now the next generation can experience the joys of watching onscreen magic from between their fingers too!

Resident Evil actor Lance Reddick shared a message to fans of the cancelled Netflix show.
It was announced last week that the streaming service had swung the axe on the videogame adaptation after just one season.
A contingent of fans were left upset by the decision, and shared messages of sadness on social media. Reddick, who called out the “haters and the trolls”, shared a video addressing the cancellation.
“I want to do this video because I wanted to do some acknowledgments and some thank yous,” he said in the clip shared on Twitter.
“As all of you are well aware by now, our show Resident Evil on Netflix has been cancelled. And the haters and the trolls notwithstanding, I want to give a special thank you to all the fans who watched the show, got what we were doing, and really loved it because there are a hell of a lot of you.

Netflix's Resident Evil will not return for a second season.
Deadline reported Friday that the streamer had canceled the zombie drama after just one season.
The news comes around six weeks after its debut on the service.
It kicked off with 72.7 million hours viewed, but didn't grow much from that when it had a full week of release factored in.
Netflix shows typically surge in their second week on the service because more days are accounted and word of mouth usually moves the needle.
Resident Evil logged 73.3 million hours viewed in its second week.
The reaction from critics and viewers was not strong, either.
It has a 55 approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes but just 27 from audiences.
"Year 2036 – 14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by the blood-thirsty infected and insane creatures," reads the logline for the series.

The Umbrella Corporation will be closing its doors as Deadline has reported that Netflix has canceled Resident Evil after just one season.
The Resident Evil series was released a month-and-a-half ago, and although it debuted at the #2 spot with 72.7 million hours viewed, it dropped off of Netflix’s Top 10 after only three weeks. Combined with the cost of the series and lackluster reviews from critics and audiences, the cancelation of Resident Evil isn’t a huge surprise.

The first live-action series in the Resident Evil franchise will be a short-lived one.
Netflix has canceled the series after a single season. The decision comes six weeks after Resident Evil’s July 14 debut and after both the streamer’s own metrics and external measurements showed the series didn’t have a long shelf life with viewers.
The series was the first live action show in the media-spanning Resident Evil universe after a host of video games and movie adaptations and a Netflix animated series that premiered in 2021. It’s set primarily in 2036, 14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, and centers on a young woman (Ella Balinska) fighting for survival amid hordes of zombies and other monsters.
The cast also includes Lance Reddick, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, Paola Nuñez, Ahad Raza Mir, Connor Gosatti and Turlough Convery.

Netflix has canceled “Resident Evil” after one season, TheWrap has confirmed. The eight-episode horror series, based on the game franchise of the same name, premiered on the streamer July 14.
The cancellation is unsurprising given the series’ mixed-to-negative critical and audience response: On Metacritic, “Resident Evil” holds a critics’ consensus score of 53 and an overwhelmingly negative user score of 1.5. The show holds a similar 55 critics’ score and 27 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Upon its debut, “Resident Evil” held the No. 2 slot on Netflix’s Top 10, logging 72.67 million hours viewed. It dropped to No. 3 and No. 5 in the consecutive weeks, eventually exiting the list after its third week.

The live-action “Resident Evil” series at Netflix has been canceled after just one season.
The eight-episode first season premiered on Netflix July 14. The show was originally ordered to series at Netflix in 2020.
The series debuted to a mixed critical response, registering just a 55 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes coupled with a 27 audience approval rating. Per the weekly Netflix Top 10 rankings that the streamer issues, “Resident Evil” was streamed for over 72 million hours the week it debuted, making it the number two program of the week behind only “Stranger Things” Season 4. After just one season that premiered this past July, Netflix has already made the decision to cancel their live action “Resident Evil” series, Deadline reports this afternoon.
Deadline notes, “The news, which comes a month and a half after the series’ July 14 release, is not entirely surprising as the drama did not have a particularly strong showing on Netflix’s Top 10 and cost vs. viewing is the streamer’s leading renewal criterion.”
The idea behind the Netflix series was to adapt different parts of different Resident Evil games, opening up the universe and allowing anything to be possible within the show’s world. In fact, there had been hints that elements from Resident Evil Village would be making their way into future seasons, with an appearance from Lady Dimitrescu being teased by the creators.
Alas, Netflix’s “Resident Evil” is no more. The fate of many shows in the streaming era.

The big question for longtime Resident Evil fans with regards to Netflix’s new take on the franchise is whether or not it exists within the same canon as the games. Does this show continue or enhance the timeline of the video games in some way?
The definitive answer is revealed in episode 7, “Parasite,” in which we learn that the show’s Albert Wesker (Lance Reddick), father to Jade (Ella Balinska/Tamara Smart) and Billie (Adeline Rudolph/Siena Agudong), is one of several clones the Wesker from the games made of himself. We even see Reddick don the signature leather trench coat and shades for a short flashback scene in which the original Wesker physically and verbally abuses every soul in his vicinity, as only he can.

When I think about zombies — or I should say, when a zombie show is either meticulously cogent or utterly unconvincing in its depiction of the undead — I often think about their transformation. Whether long or short, the process of losing your humanity and becoming a walking, growling, flesh-eating corpse tends to end with a sudden shift; a moment where the multifaceted human being disappears and a single-minded (zero-minded?) creature takes over — like a light switch being flipped or, as intended, like moving from life to death. There is no choice in the matter. Once bitten or otherwise infected, the bite-e is doomed to their fate. Surrender is the only option.
“Resident Evil,” over its first six episodes, provides plenty of time to dwell on zombie symbolism and verisimilitude. Staring into eyes surrounded by a clear, indented division between actual skin and latex breaks the spell of a fictional horror adventure.

Netflix’s Resident Evil is kicking off a new era for the franchise on the small screen. After years of movie adaptations starring Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the franchise is shifting gears to tell a story unlike any we’ve ever seen on the big screen or in the games. This new Resident Evil series ditches Chris and Claire Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, and Jill Valentine to tell a modern-day story about Albert Wesker and his family.
Starring the great Lance Reddick as the classic Resident Evil villain, the series not only gives us a complete reimagining of the character as a family man but also introduces us to his two teen daughters, Jade (Ella Balinska/Tamara Smart) and Billie (Adeline Rudolph/Siena Agudong), who have their own issues to deal with, like having to upend their whole lives to move with their father to...

"We didn't do a screen test. We literally met the day before we were just put on set," Smart says. "We met at the pool, and we just talked for hours." Turning to Agudong, she asks, "Do you remember anything we were talking about? Because I don't remember anything, really."
"I don't, but I remember leaving and I was like, 'Oh, I know a lot now,'" Agudong says with a laugh. "No one really knows how to start that conversation. You sit down, and you're like, 'Oh, this is going to be...

Ever since AMC’s “The Walking Dead” sank its teeth into pop culture, zombie shows have been reanimating on TV at an apocalyptic rate. Netflix alone has a horde of shows and movies, like Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead,” the Korean high school drama “All of Us Are Dead,” the period horror “Kingdom” and even the dark comedy “Santa Clarita Diet.” To stand out from the rest of the pack, all of these post-“Walking Dead” shows had to reimagine the classic zombie story by experimenting with genre or setting. Netflix’s “Resident Evil” series is no different, infusing its take on the undead with multiple timelines, teen drama and a sci-fi pharmaceutical company bent on world domination.
The “Resident Evil” franchise has been around for more than 25 years, launching as a horror game in the mid ’90s that terrified players with its grotesque monsters and haunting world.

This Resident Evil article contains spoilers.
Netflix’s take on Resident Evil is unlike any other adaptation of the long-running game series. Not just in its change of format but in its approach to blending the franchise’s zombie-ridden world with a semi real-world setting in which everyday conversations run the gamut from Covid-19 to Dua Lipa. It’s a strange cocktail of a show that can be patchy and imbalanced at times, and yet oddly fun, irreverent, and surprising as well. This show is all over the place, which makes it quite similar to the game series it’s based on, perhaps unintentionally so.
Before going any further, the most important thing to note is this: If you’re a fan of the games, the show gets better as it goes. The most intriguing aspect of the story is that it builds on the lore of the games quite deliberately,...

In 2002, the first “Resident Evil” live-action film based on the zombie horror video game dropped in theaters. Although director Paul W.S. Anderson’s adaptation featuring Milla Jovovich was entertaining enough to garner a sequel, the film barely touched the original storyline and underwhelmed gamers and critics alike. 20 years, seven live-action movies, and about 12 games later, Netflix’s “Resident Evil” series is here to disappoint jaded fans yet again.
Created by Andrew Dabb (“Supernatural”), this new eight-episode Netflix series focuses on fraternal twins Jade and Billie Wesker, the daughters of scientist and Umbrella Corporation scientist Albert Wesker. The previous movies, including the recent “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,” were action-horror spectacles. But this “Resident Evil” series feels like a YA time-hopping genre mystery unfolding across two timelines.
