Hours after Amazon MGM Studios announced that María José Rodríguez has departed as head of Spanish Originals, The Mediapro Studio has announced that she will take up the post of managing director of Globomedia, one of the jewels in its Spanish production house crown.
Rodríguez will take up her new position on Sept. 1, with oversight of Globomedia content strategy and production operations, reporting directly to Laura Fernández Espeso, The Mediapro Studio CEO.
A historic production house founded in 1993 as independent production lifted off in Spain looking to feed the prime time ambitions of newly created commercial networks Telecinco and Antena 3.
Creating massive hits such as its first series “Médico de Familia” (1995-99), “7 Vidas” (1999-2006), “Los Serrano” (2003-08), “The Boarding School” (2007-10)” and “Paco’s Men” (2005-21) which knocked U.S. shows out of primetime, fired up front and original sales abroad, forged a Spanish TV style which remains to...

Madrid — The 3rd Conecta Fiction, Europe’s biggest Latin American TV co-production forum, wrapped last week in Pamplona after four days of dealing, debate and gastronomic delectation. Following 10 Takeaways from an intense and buoyant event, driven by the unfaltering growth of high-end production in Spain and most of Latin America:
1.Platform Pivot
The writing was on the wall, or more precisely the big screen of an auditorium at Pamplona’s luxurious Baluarte congress center, from the get-go of Conecta Fiction. Drama and mini-series production near tripled in Germany over 2014-18, according to Spain’s Gabinete de Estudios de la Comunicación Audiovisual (Geca). It near doubled in France last year, up to 27 titles, from 13 in 2017. Yet traditional TV viewing is still falling among young audiences, down 28.4% and 20.1% among 14-12s and 13-24s in Spain, for example, said Geca’s Luis de Zubiaurre Wagner, citing Kantor Media. The real money shot...

The Mediapro offices in Madrid’s Fuencarral district have for years boasted the logo of Globomedia, Spain’s premier scripted series production house.
But in the second half of April, a new logo, the Mediapro Studio, will replace the old. The change marks a near-total reinvention of the company’s scripted series production paradigm, says Mediapro partner Taxto Benet.
For years, Globomedia produced content for Spain’s three nationwide broadcast networks. Now its production partners span the globe, from many of the most important U.S. companies such as HBO and Netflix, to Mexico’s Televisa, Sweden’s Dramacorp, Italy’s Palomar, Finland’s Yle, Argentina’s two biggest broadcasters Telefe and Artear, plus Spain’s Mediaset España, Atresmedia and Tve. Mediapro also has four shows in development with U.K. producers, says Laura Fernández Espeso, the Mediapro Studio co-head of TV.

Madrid — Pol-ka’s banner titles straddle telenovelas and international-length series. Here are highlights, projects, productions and shows now screening packing one of the most ambitious slates of any Latin American company:
‘Argentina, Land Of Passion And Revenge’ (Pol-ka)
The big one, at least for free-to-air. A period piece, so far more expensive to shoot, so rarer as a production, and a potential event series. A portrait of Spain’s diaspora to Argentina after its Civil War, the tawdry ethics of the new (and old) homeland, betrayal, passion, poverty and ill-gotten gains. A big play by Pol-ka to snatch Telefe’s ratings crown for El Trece. Overseas co-production potential.
“The Bronze Garden 2” (HBO Latin America, Pol-ka)
A HBO Latin America original, and directed by Pablo Fendrik (“Ardor”) and Hernán Goldfrid (“Thesis on a Homicide”), a missing daughter thriller. Elevating the father of the child into a tragic hero via meticulous character development and cinema-standard direction,...

Cannes — Two of the power axes on the new worldwide TV production scene, Argentina’s ElTrece, Pol-ka, Cablevision on one hand and Mediapro Group-Oficina Burman on the other, have pacted to produce together a brand new dram series, scheduled to air from 2019.
The series turns on the campaign of a man who runs for the presidency of his country. Humberto Ortega, who co-wrote with “La Casa de Papel’s” Alex Pina on series such as “El Barco” and “Los Serrano,” is writing the screenplay for the series.
“Dominated by imposture and pressures, both self conceived and external,” a press statement reads, the candidate will suffer deep transformation, discovering his true self, as his ambitions conflicts with traditional ethics. Corralled, seemingly facing inevitable defeat, or so his team thinks, he will find a way, however, to face up to adversity.
That solution will no doubt cast caustic comment on the way...

Actress Belén Rueda had built up a strong résumé in Spanish TV before she decided to leave the popular series Los Serrano to focus on feature films. It wasn’t long before she broke out in 2007’s The Orphanage, the supernatural thriller that brought her the attention of movie audiences around the globe. She returns to the genre in Julia’S Eyes, directed by Guillem Morales and (like Orphanage) produced by Guillermo del Toro.
