The start of the broadcast television season also marks the return of my favorite broadcast television archetype, the antisocial genius who solves crimes/medical mysteries/legal quandaries by alternatingly squinting or staring off into the middle distance.
We know the best shows in this genre when we see them — let’s see how many times I can reference House in this review — and the worst tend to be so instantly interchangeable that even those who’ve dutifully watched six or 12 episodes might not be able to tell one from the other.
NBC’s new hospital procedural Brilliant Minds is far from that bottom tier. Yet the network is already going out of its way to cause the series to descend into the miasma, rather than achieve clarity as the watchably unremarkable thing that it is.
It all starts with the title, which isn’t to be confused with the Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind,...

When Josh Gad joined the voice cast of Disney's animated movie "Frozen," which came out in 2013, he probably didn't think that he was about to become part of one of the biggest pop culture juggernauts in recent history. Both the original and its 2019 sequel, "Frozen II," made buckets of money at the box office, while the first movie also scored an Academy Award for best original song (thanks to the inescapable earworm "Let It Go"). Plus, Gad's character Olaf, a living snowman who wants to experience summer, became a breakout success on his own. So does Gad have any regrets about his "Frozen" experience? Yes, actually. He wishes he'd changed his voice a little more for the character.
"If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would've created a different voice," Gad said while participating in an interview at Fan Expo Canada,...

Josh Gad reveals the “big mistake” he made when it came to voicing Olaf in Frozen.
“If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would’ve created a different voice,” the actor shared during a recent interview at Fan Expo Canada. “It’s very weird being in a supermarket and having a little child go like this …” slowly turning his head to the side.
“That was my first big mistake,” Gad added. “But, you know, people tell me I have a very unique voice. People seem to like my voice, so I try to give it to them when I can.”
The Beauty and the Beast actor lent his voice to Olaf, the wildly popular snowman, in 2013’s Frozen as well as its 2019 sequel. He has also voiced the character in several Disney shorts. Gad is expected to join Kristen Bell...

From Blumhouse and visionary writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man, comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man.
Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte, fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger.
But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to...

The first trailer for the best-named horror film of 2024 is finally here, and "Nightbitch" is poised to be one hell of a ride. It's also the latest bold career move from much-loved actor Amy Adams, who stars alongside "Halt and Catch Fire" alum Scoot McNairy in the movie based on Rachel Yoder's 2021 horror-comedy novel. "Nightbitch" has a provocative title, a striking red-on-red book cover, and a cheeky movie tagline ("Motherhood is a b***h"), but what is it actually about? With this first trailer, the cat –- or dog, rather -– is out of the bag: yep, this is a story about a stay-at-home mom turning into a canine.
First announced in 2022, the big-screen adaptation of Yoder's satirical debut novel is directed by "Diary of a Teenage Girl" and "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" filmmaker Marielle Heller, and is set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival in September,...

In M. Night Shyamalan’s tense but psychologically spurious 2016 film “Split,” a group of young girls were trapped by a serial killer in a tiny, secluded room, and forced to figure out how to escape. Shyamalan’s new film “Trap” cleverly reverses that premise: A serial killer, trapped in a giant public building and surrounded by police officers at every exit, is also trying to escape — but do we even want him to?
“Trap” stars Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a firefighter taking his teenage daughter, Riley to see her favorite musician, Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). As they work their way inside the crowded venue, Cooper notices police stationed everywhere, a lot more than usual, and given Lady Raven’s incredible popularity that’s saying something.
It’s only when Cooper makes nice with a friendly merch salesman that he finds out this is all a trap to catch a notorious murderer,...

With Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and the awesome might of Mother Nature out in front of the marketing for Twisters, many may not know about the additional treats swirling in Lee Isaac Chung’s legacy sequel to the original 1996 hit. Among Powell’s group of YouTube-streaming weather junkies are Brandon Perera, Katy O’Brien, Sasha Lane and, most exciting to music fans of the aughts and 2010s, Tunde Adebimpe, best known as the frontman for TV on the Radio. Adebimpe plays a technobabble-spewing weather weenie named Dexter, and while he doesn’t get tons of screen time, he kind of steals every scene he’s in.
Adebimpe, of course, is no newcomer to film, having starred in the 2001 indie Jump Tomorrow (based on a short completed at NYU) before his band made its first recordings. He also appeared in Jonathan Demme’s 2008 winner Rachel Getting Married (he was the guy Rachel was getting married to!

“May The Schwartz Be With You.”
We've been hearing rumors of a potential Spaceballs sequel for many years, and it's now been confirmed that a follow-up to Mel Brooks' '80s Star Wars spoof is officially in the works.
The movie is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Josh Gad set to star and produce alongside Brooks. Josh Greenbaum will direct the film from a screenplay by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad.
Plot details are still under wraps, but the original movie was a full-on farce, following the general plot of Star Wars: A New Hope while also making fun of other space-set or sci-fi properties such as Star Trek, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes and Alien.
Spaceballs starred Bill Pullman as Lone Star, the late John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet, and Brooks in a...

Josh Gad is attached to produce and star in a Spaceballs sequel in early development at Amazon MGM Studios, which Mel Brooks will also produce, Deadline can confirm.
Amazon declined to comment.
Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) will direct from Gad’s script written with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu). Details as to the plot are under wraps. Kevin Salter will serve as executive producer on the project.
Directed by Brooks, the original Spaceballs was a send-up of the sci-fi genre released by MGM in 1987. The film’s plot revolves around the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks), who attempt to steal the atmosphere of the peaceful planet Druidia, only to be thwarted by the hero Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), his sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga).
Others in the cast included Joan Rivers and Dick Van Patten.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 73 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 22 contenders from last year. As was the case last year, each member’s selections may not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which will be eight in this case.
On its quest for a second consecutive victory here, “The Bear” will have to fend off just two of its seven 2023 rivals: “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Last year’s remaining contenders that did not air episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 eligibility period are “Barry,” “Jury Duty,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Ted Lasso,” and “Wednesday,” the last of which is the only one known to have a new season in the works.

So, here's what you should see in the theaters in August: Cuckoo, Alien: Romulus, The Crow, and Trap. But out of all these horror movies, Trap will likely be on the first ones you see, because Warner Bros. changed the date. Instead of releasing on August 9, the new M. Night Shyamalan film will now be released on August 2.
Warner Bros. decision to move Trap up is somewhat perplexing as the film will now be in direct competition with Neon's horror film Cuckoo, whereas before it would have been up against It Ends with Us and Borderlands, neither of which is another horror movie.
Trap comes from Academy Award-nominated film director M. Night Shyamalan. He's best known for writing and directing the box office hit The Sixth Sense. In fact, this movie got him nominated for two Academy Awards. He was also behind the films Split, Glass, Old and Knock at the Cabin.

Hostel is coming to television.
Paul Giamatti has closed a deal to star in a Hostel TV series with the franchise’s Eli Roth, Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss all returning for the project from Fifth Season, the studio behind Apple TV+’s Severance.
The Hostel show, which is currently in development and does not yet have a platform attached, is described as being a “modern adaptation” and an “elevated thriller” that’s also a “reinvention” of the horror franchise that launched in 2006 and spawned two sequels.
Roth and Briggs will pen the script, with the former set to direct. Roth, Briggs and Fleiss will all executive produce the series.
The original movie revolved around three backpackers who were headed to a Slovak city that promised to meet their hedonistic expectations, with no idea of the hell that awaited them.
Giamatti will star in a key role, with character details under wraps.

We've covered quite a few actors and actresses here at TV Fanatic, and while some of them have fallen into the "familiar face in the background" roles, none have snuck up on audiences like Olivia Munn.
One of her first acting gigs was that of "Claw Hostess" in the Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy Date Night.
Although her part was small, the actress was one of the most memorable experiences of that movie—besides Mark Wahlberg shirtless, that is.
Though she looks like a model, Munn's career has focused solely on the small and big screen and live and scripted appearances.
In many ways, she's like that actor you notice when you rewatch movies from years ago, making you go, "Wait, isn't that what's her name from that thing?"
It's an extremely common occurrence with actors who turn into big names later in their careers. Don't believe me?...

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.

Exclusive: Following a major bidding battle that went through the weekend, Amazon MGM Studios has landed an untitled thriller written by Natalie Krinsky, with Kim Kardashian attached to star and produce. Bruna Papandrea is also producing through her Made Up Stories banner alongside Krinsky.
According to sources, Amazon was one of five studios in the mix. With all being sorted out, sources close to the project say a theatrical or streaming release plan is possible, though nothing is confirmed given the early nature of the project.
Not much is known about the pic other than it being a thriller developed specifically for Kardashian. This marks the second massive package sold since the SAG-AFTRA strike ended with Kardashian front and center, after Netflix landed her comedy The Fifth Wheel over Thanksgiving; insiders say the latest deal is even more lucrative then that package.

[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of Wolf Like Me.]
In the final scene of season two of Peacock’s comedy-drama Wolf Like Me, Mary (Isla Fisher) gives birth to her baby with boyfriend Gary (Josh Gad), revealing its identity as a wolf. Anxiety over whether their child would be a human or animal was at the center of most of the conflict throughout the show’s second season. But the streamer has yet to announce if audiences will get to see how Mary, Gary and his daughter Emma (Ariel Donoghue) will handle life raising a wolf offspring in a potential season three.
“Right now, we don’t know if we’re going to get to make Wolf Like Me 3. But it’s such an exciting time to be on Peacock, and when we do make it, they really let us push the boundaries and create the series we want to,” Fisher tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below.

With the new series Colin From Accounts — streaming on Paramount+ following a Foxtel/Binge debut in its native Australia — creator/stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer have set themselves possibly one of the most difficult challenges in the history of romantic comedies.
How do you make a show in which, within the first five minutes, the main characters are responsible for running over an adorable dog and, by the end of eight episodes, have the audience liking those characters, if not necessarily rooting for their coupling?
The answer comes down to clever writing and the chemistry between Brammall and Dyer, who are married in addition to their collaborations here. Colin From Accounts never wholly shakes its “They ran over a dog!” bleakness — the dog, it should be emphasized clearly, is mostly Ok — nor does it wholly break out from the rom-com conventions it’s so keenly aware of. But it...

You could almost smell the chicken fajitas steaming off of the wild twist on Nirvana‘s “Lithium” in Peacock‘s horror-com Wolf Like Me Season 2.
Once again, creator Abe Forsythe and music supervisor Andrew Kotatko made musical magic with their own rendition of “Lithium” with a Mexican flavor.
“That involved me getting permission from Courtney Love. And not only to just use the original track. It’s being able to turn it into what it is in the show,” Forsythe told Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
In Wolf Like Me, Season 2, Mary (Isla Fisher) goes into labor and Gary’s (Josh Gadd) daughter Emma knows hearing “Lithium” would comfort her during an especially long and painful labor. The song reminded Mary of her dead husband (who she likely killed while transformed into a werewolf) so Emma found a version that would at least make Mary laugh.

All seven episodes of Peacock’s “Wolf Like Me” Season 2 are available to stream now (our review), doubling down on the charm and the werewolf complications introduced in season one. It makes for the perfect Halloween binge as October starts to wind down.
The series was created by Abe Forsythe (Little Monsters), who also serves as writer, director, and executive producer.
In season two, Mary (Isla Fisher) and Gary (Josh Gad) leap into the next phase of their relationship and face their biggest challenge yet: pregnancy. Typical anxieties for any expecting couple get exacerbated tenfold when the mom-to-be also happens to be a werewolf.
Without delving into spoilers, the second season ends on a cliffhanger, unlike the tidy, cathartic conclusion of season one. It’s the precise type of ending that demands a third season to see what happens next. Bloody Disgusting sought answers from series creator Abe Forsythe, and...

During season 2, police begin to investigate the deaths of two men, who happened to be the same men who tried to attack Gary (Josh Gad) and Emma (Ariel Donoghue) in the car. Werewolf Mary (Isla Fisher) shreds both men but then leaves Gary and Emma untouched.

One of Peacock's most successful series, Dr. Death, will be back on the air before the year's end, and we couldn't be more excited.
The streaming service on Friday announced that Dr. Death Season 2 will premiere on Thursday, December 21, 2023.
If you're looking for your Christmas binge, you'll be happy to know that all eight episodes will be available on that date.
What is Dr. Death About?
Dr. Death Season 1, headlined by Joshua Jackson, was highly binge-able, featuring twists and turns that made us want to watch the next episode, so releasing all the episodes at once is a decent tactic.
Obviously, Christopher Duntsch's storyline wrapped up at the end of the season, so the anthology will feature a chilling new story for Dr. Death Season 2.
"This season of Dr. Death, based on the Wondery podcast, follows 'Miracle Man' Paolo Macchiarini, a charming surgeon renowned for his innovative operations," reads the official Peacock description.

Ahead of the Season 2 premiere on Oct. 19, TheWrap spoke with series creator Abe Forsythe about what we can expect when Ramirez shows up, and all the other challenges the werewolf and the widower face as their relationship gets more serious.

TheWrap: How did you convince Edgar to be on the show?
Abe Forsythe: We just sent him the script. I’ve always admired him as an actor and I thought he would be really interesting in this role. I wasn’t prepared for was how much extra he brought to what I had written as the character.

The first season of genre-bending rom-com series “Wolf Like Me“ introduced the charming meet-cute between single dad Gary (Josh Gad) and tragic loner Mary (Isla Fisher) with a horror twist: Mary happens to transform into a wolf every full moon. Series creator/director/writer Abe Forsythe (2019’s Little Monsters) explores the next chapter in the couple’s relationship in Season 2, doubling down on the charm and the werewolf complications in the process.
After surviving a harrowing encounter last season that saw Mary, in wolf form, save Gary and his daughter Emma (Ariel Donoghue) from death in the Outback, the trio have settled into a comfortable, content life as a newfound family unit. But their familiar bliss is short-lived with the arrival of a new relationship complication: Mary is pregnant.
