Pansy, the central character in “Hard Truths,” British director Mike Leigh’s first film in six years, is one of the most unpleasant, off-putting and utterly exhausting characters to grace a movie screen in years. And the fact that we feel for Pansy by the end of the 97 minutes of Leigh’s spare and wrenching gem is one of the small miracles of an extraordinarily moving film.
From “Naked” to “Secrets & Lies,” “Vera Drake” to “Topsy Turvy,” “Happy-Go-Lucky” to “Mr. Turner,” Leigh has been a craftsman whose films are impressive vehicles for creating empathy for difficult characters — or, rather, for difficult people, so rich and true do they appear.
“Hard Truths” brings Leigh back to a contemporary story for the first time since “Another Year” in 2010, with his last two movies being the period pieces “Mr. Turner” in 2014 and “Peterloo” in 2018. And it reunites him with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, the...

One of IndieWire’s most-anticipated fall film premieres this year, “Hard Truths” reunites beloved (and seven-time Oscar-nominated) director Mike Leigh with actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste. She received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for his 1996 Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Secrets & Lies.” In “Hard Truths,” out from Bleecker Street for an awards-qualifying run in December after debuting at the Toronto and New York film festivals, Jean-Baptiste plays a woman sick to death of life, and she’ll tell anyone about it who’s willing to listen. Watch the trailer below.
Here’s the official synopsis courtesy of Bleecker Street: “Legendary filmmaker Mike Leigh returns to the contemporary world with a fierce, compassionate, and often darkly humorous study of family and the thorny ties that bind us. Reunited with Leigh for the first time since multiple Oscar-nominated ‘Secrets and Lies,’ the astonishing Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman wracked by fear,...

Edward Berger surprised the industry last year with Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front,” an unexpected awards sensation that landed nine Oscar nominations at the 2023 ceremony and won four: Best International Feature, Best Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design. So perhaps the nerves Berger expressed while introducing the world premiere of his follow-up film, “Conclave,” at the Telluride Film Festival on Friday night should have been anticipated. After all, what are the chances that lightning strikes twice?
But based on the response inside the Werner Herzog Theater, maybe it will. “Conclave,” already a strong contender in the Gold Derby odds in these nascent days of the Oscars race, lived up to those lofty expectations and could land several nominations at next year’s Academy Awards.
“If my gut reaction to the film, and that of industry insiders with whom I consulted after it ended, are any indication,...

Renowned British filmmaker Mike Leigh believes that if the subjects of his 2018 historical drama “Peterloo” were alive to see the upcoming U.K. general elections they would be “not only horrified but mystified” about “people procrastinating about whether to vote and seeing justification in not voting, which is what’s happening right now.”
While in conversation about his career with Chief Executive of Film London Adrian Wooton at the Mediterrane Film Festival, the director emphasized that his retelling of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 is a film “about democracy” and felt it was vital to highlight the importance of voting ahead of the elections.
Speaking on his period films, which include “Peterloo,” 2014’s “Mr. Turner” and 1999’s “Topsy-Turvy,” Leigh said those were “the only times where I’ve been able to get bigger budgets.” “What I failed to do and continue to fail to do to this day is to get...

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Her remaining two bids came for “Mr. Turner” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2018).

The cast of “Hard Truths,” the 23rd film from legendary British director Mike Leigh, has been unveiled, along with a first look image.
The feature, which like most Leigh projects has remained under a veil of secrecy, has reunited the filmmaker with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who received an Oscar nomination for his 1996 drama “Secrets & Lies.” Michele Austin, another frequent Leigh collaborator, also stars.
“Hard Truths” was shot in London in 2023 and, following his historical epics “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo,” sees Leigh return to the contemporary world. However, plot details are still scarce, the film’s only description being that it’s a “tough but compassionate intimate study of family life”.
Leigh was joined behind the camera by his regular crew members, including producer Georgina Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, costume designer Jacqueline Durran (who recently earned her 9th Oscar nomination for her work on “Barbie”), production designer Suzie Davis, composer Gary Yershon...

The New York Film Critics Circle has significantly boosted the Oscar prospects for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” by anointing the Western epic best film and naming Lily Gladstone best actress.
The film, distributed by Apple Original Films in partnership with Paramount Pictures (overseeing theatrical distribution), marks the streaming service’s inaugural win from the NYFCC.
NYFCC’s winner for best film has typically had a strong correlation with the Academy Awards’ best picture prize. Since the expansion to 10 nominees in 2009, only “Carol” (2015) and “First Cow” (2020) have missed out on a best picture nom. The latter was the first film in the organization’s long history to fail to garner a single Oscar nom. Since 1935, NYFCC and the Academy have matched 43% of the time.
Scorsese claimed his third top prize from the NYFCC, following “Goodfellas” (1990) and “The Irishman” (2019). His achievement places him among a select few directors...

Directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) from a screenplay by Jonny Sweet (Greed), Wicked Little Letters is based on a true scandal that stunned 1920s England. The story centers on neighbors Edith Swan (Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Buckley) in the seaside town of Littlehampton. One day, a series of obscene letters begin to target Edith and others, and when suspicion falls on Rose, the women of the town suspect something is amiss and decide to investigate.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights to “Wicked Little Letters,” a stranger-than-fiction mystery comedy starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. The movie, directed by “Me Before You” filmmaker Thea Sharrock, had its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
“Wicked Little Letters” will debut in theaters sometime in 2024.
Set in a 1920s English seaside town amid a “dark and absurd scandal,” the film follows the true story of two neighbors: the deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Colman) and the rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, fouth-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues — but as the town’s women start to investigate, they suspect that Rose may not be the culprit after all.

Exclusive: Seven-time Oscar nominee Mike Leigh (Secrets & Lies) is underway on his secretive new film in London, we can reveal.
Filming began today on the project which we’re told will explore family relationships in the post-pandemic world.
After over a decade spent making period films Mr.Turner and Peterloo, a source close to the project said the Brit auteur will “return to his ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”
Cast details remain under wraps on the project which was initially due to shoot in 2020 but was delayed by the pandemic.
Cornerstone Films is handling international sales and will continue shopping the project at this week’s Cannes market. Studiocanal has UK rights while Bleecker Street pre-bought North America.

ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” has been rightly praised as broadcast TV’s great new Emmy hope, a critically acclaimed comedy that helped the traditional networks avoid completely getting shut out in the key scripted categories this year. But while the broadcasters have lamented the loss of their competitive edge among Television Academy voters for more than a decade, now it’s basic cable’s turn to watch their fortunes fade.
This year, just two basic cable series made it into the outstanding series field: AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” in drama, and FX’s “What We Do In the Shadows” in comedy. It’s a far cry from the golden age of basic cable at the Emmys, when the drama field, in particular, was dominated by the platform. The streak began in 2002, when FX made history by becoming the first basic cable network to win one of the major Emmy...

It’s that time again, dear readers: the Streaming Wars have kicked off in 2022!
Throughout 2021, as you will no doubt recall from 2021 Streaming Wars entries I, II, III and IV, Netflix saw a dip in Streaming Video On Demand (SVOD) search engagement in the U.S., according to our pals at JustWatch. It remained, by far, the dominant streaming option for JustWatch interest, but its lead was slipping as a series of new streamers created by some of the biggest studios reclaimed their own content from Netflix to lure new subscribers.
Well, JustWatch has supplied some fascinating insights into user trends for the first quarter of the new year, and the standout issue is this: Netflix has just a 4 advantage over its closest competitor, Amazon Prime Video, in terms of SVOD engagement on the site! It’s still leading the charge with a plurality of engagement, 23 of all JustWatch searches.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). She would be the 11th costumer to achieve as many victories and already ranks as the eighth most-nominated one. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011). The first five films for which she was nominated were all directed by James Ivory.

Dan Lovinger, a veteran ad-sales executive who has helped supervised outreach to advertisers for NBCUniversal venues ranging from prime-time TV shows to “Sunday Night Football” and the Super Bowl, is getting a new assignment.
Lovinger will oversee all efforts aimed at getting advertisers to sponsor NBCUniversal’s Olympics and Paralympics broadcasts, a pillar of the company’s programming strategy representing hundreds of hours worth of some of TV’s highest-priced inventory. Lovinger, who had been an executive vice president, has been elevated to president, and will report directly to Linda Yaccarino, NBCU’s global chairman of advertising sales and partnerships. Updated with latest cancellations: The audience at tonight’s performance of Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! was seated and waiting for the music to start when the show was canceled due to a positive Covid test result within the company. The result apparently had been received just prior to curtain.
The audience was ushered out of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Producers are expected to announce an updated schedule performance Friday.
The cancellation was just the latest — though certainly the most dramatic — in Broadway’s new wave of Covid-caused pauses this week. Jagged Little Pill, the musical of Alanis Morissette songs at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, has canceled tonight’s performance due to the detection of a positive Covid case in the company. Performances are scheduled to resume Friday.
Earlier today, Mrs. Doubtfire joined the roster of on-pause Broadway productions when producers announced that performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre from tonight through Sunday have been canceled.

Nicholas Britell, Kris Bowers, Hildur Guðnadóttir Spotlight Film Music at Disney Hall With L.A. Phil
The Los Angeles Philharmonic took a major step forward over the weekend with its “Reel Change” series devoted to contemporary film composers.
By inviting Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (“Joker”) and Americans Kris Bowers (“Green Book”) and Nicholas Britell (“Moonlight”) to curate programs of their music, and those of composers that inspired them, the Phil is formally acknowledging the importance of media music as a legitimate part of the contemporary musical scene.
Symphony programmers are notorious for ignoring film music unless it’s on a “pops” program or a live-to-picture event, which in recent years have proven extremely lucrative. The L.A. Phil has rarely programmed, much less celebrated, music for visual media on a subscription concert.
And the fact that the series included a woman and a person of color was more than a token nod to diversity, as this trio is among the most sought-after of modern composers for film,...

The Oscar-winning Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”) plays Leonard, an English tailor who used to craft bespoke suits on London’s famed Savile Row. He heads to Chicago after a personal tragedy, where he operates a tailor shop in a rough part of town, making beautiful clothes for the only people in the neighborhood who can afford them: a family of gangsters.

IndieWire turns 25 this year. To mark the occasion, we’re running a series of essays about the future of everything we cover.
Quick: How many films can you find on Netflix from before 1980? Gems can be uncovered there — shout-out to Youssef Chahine’s 1958 Egyptian classic, “Cairo Station” — but the burden is on those cinephiles already interested enough to seek them out.
Lovers of film history aren’t born, they’re made. Discussions with other film fans, nights out at your university rep cinema, and serendipitous discoveries on Turner Classic Movies, certainly help. Many of us owe our parents for exposing us to classic film at an early age. Still, we’ve reached a point where movies from Hollywood’s Golden Age, as well as concurrent world cinema titles, are more accessible than ever, but risk falling further into obscurity.
There was a time when you couldn’t see even towering classics,...

Leading British independent filmmakers expressed some frank views on gatekeepers acting as a barrier to independent cinema at a BFI London Film Festival panel discussion on Tuesday.
The panel consisted of Palme d’Or winner Mike Leigh (“Secrets & Lies”), Oscar winner Asif Kapadia (“Amy”) and Golden Bear winner Michael Winterbottom (“In This World”). The discussion used Winterbottom’s recently published book “Dark Matter: Independent Filmmaking in the 21st Century” as a starting point. The discussion was moderated by former London Film Festival artistic director Sandra Hebron.
Leigh, who debuted in 1971 with “Bleak Moments,” has a unique approach to getting funded in that, except for his films with historical subject matter like “Topsy Turvy,” “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo,” he does not reveal what his films are about. The reason for this process, he says, is that he discovers what a film is about during the process of making it.

Recently seen as a domineering equerry, Major Alistair Gregory, in Pablo Larraín’s “Spencer,” keeping a watchful eye on Kristen Stewart’s Diana as she arrives at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate for Christmas, Timothy Spall has high hopes for the film following its rapturous Venice premiere, the actor tells Variety at Zurich Film Festival.
“‘Spencer’ is going to be a big deal when it comes out. It has been so well received,” he says, calling his character “a bit of an antagonist.”
“He believes in the sanctity of that system. Britain doesn’t have a constitution and if there is one thing that can really represent this poetic, mystical Britishness, it’s the royal family. That’s why everyone is so obsessed with them, including people from other countries. My character understands that. He says: ‘I was prepared to die for this. It’s bigger than my life and...

Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana drama “Spencer” has been acquired by Amazon Prime Video for distribution in France, Variety has learned.
The highly anticipated movie, directed by “Jackie” filmmaker Pablo Larrain, will have its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival next week.
STXInternational represents the rights for France, alongside the U.K., Italy and Benelux. Other international territories have been acquired by independent distributors.
Neon and Topic Studios, who jointly acquired U.S. rights to the movie in June 2020, just released the first trailer for the biographical film which immediately went viral.
Penned by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, “Spencer” centers on a weekend in the early 1990s when Diana decided to separate from Prince Charles amid rumors of affairs. The late princess was spending the Christmas holiday with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk when she decided to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.

The fall movie season is jam-packed with eye-opening actor transformations, from Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” to Jared Leto in “House of Gucci,” but few are more anticipated than Kristen Stewart becoming Princess Diana for “Spencer.” The biographical drama is the latest directorial effort from Pablo Larraín, who directed Natalie Portman to an Oscar nomination for playing Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the acclaimed “Jackie.” Can Larraín do the same for Stewart? Oscar pundits will be watching closely when the movie world premieres at the Venice Film Festival next month.
The official “Spencer” synopsis from Neon and Topic Studios reads: “December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.

Praise be! Roswell, New Mexico, returns this week. Did we need it to be a summer show? Nope, but we sure like that it will air without stiff competition.
In the not-so-good news department, Good Witch will air its series finale, closing the door on 13 years worth of history. Sob!
Elsewhere, there's a new Lifetime movie, more fun with Outer Banks, The Wine Show returns, Burden of Proof Season 4 premieres, and there is a scary movie on Shudder starring young Randall from This Is Us.
Saturday, July 24
8/7c Next Door Nightmare (Lifetime)
Beware of the seemingly sweet senior-aged ladies!
Sarah and Kyle are on the cusp of living the suburban dream as a happily married couple who have just moved into a nice home and are expecting their first child.
You know, the millennial pipe dream! But fret not, before it gives you an existential crisis, this couple isn't prepared...

With reboots and revivals ruling the TV development slate over the last few years, I had reservations about a TV show sequel to Turner & Hooch.
For the most part, expanding franchises usually results in people wanting the project to disappear from existence because of how detrimental they are to the memory of the original.
Thankfully, Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 1 manages to forge a path that makes it a worthy follow-up to the Tom Hanks movie, while introducing fresh and exciting concepts, and of course, a lovable dog in Hooch.
The series sets the tone off the bat and doesn't deviate from it, which helps to keep the show fun for all the family.
Shows from Matt Nix typically have a distinct feel, and it's hard not to compare the tone Burn Notice. It's light, filled with comedy and high-octane action sequences.
What more could we want?

In 1989, just months after he earned his first Oscar nomination for Big, and a few years before he went on a run of critical and commercial success that’s nearly unrivaled in the history of cinema, Tom Hanks starred in a series of middling movies that never would’ve suggested the megastar he’d become. One of these was Turner & Hooch, which starred Hanks as fastidious small-town cop Scott Turner, whose life is upended when he takes in a big, messy French mastiff named Hooch. It was a modest success,...

Turner & Hooch is an exciting follow to the 1989 film of the same name.
The series strikes a perfect balance between comedy, drama, and mystery to become a fun show for all the family.
TV Fanatic got the chance to catch up with Lyndsy Fonseca ahead of the series premiere about what to expect.
Check out the interview below.
TV Fanatic: What attracted you to Turner & Hooch?
Lyndsy: A few things. I think being a part of a show that the entire family can watch is kind of nice.
There's a lot of heavy stuff going on in the world, and to be a part of something that basically teenagers can be into the action and adults can be into the family relationships, and the kids can be into the dogs.
It's kind of great to do something the whole family can watch
Can you speak a bit about how your character,...
