Meryl Streep is celebrating 10 years of The Writers Lab with the 2024 lineup of female and non-binary screenwriters to watch.
Academy Award winner Streep has funded The Writers Lab since 2014, and the program is still the only offering in the world dedicated exclusively to elevating the work of women and non-binary screenwriters over the age of 40. Nicole Kidman has also supported the Lab, which is the only program in the world for mid-career screenwriters.
This year, the program is working with 14 writers across 12 projects, with Labs now operational in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Europe. The 14 selected women screenwriters will gather in early November in Saugerties, New York to focus on tools and strategies to navigate the ever-shifting landscape of professional opportunities and build sustainable careers.
Each writer will be paired with an established mentor, including returning mentor Susan Cartsonis (“What Women Want”), Lisa Cortés (“Little Richard: I Am Everything...

Prime Video has touted the viewer response to Fallout as its second-biggest series ever worldwide over 16 days of release. In the United States (and over a shorter time period), it’s No. 1.
Fallout recorded 2.9 billion minutes of viewing time in the U.S. over its first five days, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings for April 8-14. That’s far and away the best opening for a series on the Amazon-owned Prime Video, beating Reacher’s series premiere week in early 2022 (1.84 billion minutes) by more than a billion minutes.
The series also had more than double the second-place show on the list for the week: Bluey had 1.39 billion minutes of viewing in the week leading up to and including the release of its special episode “The Sign,” which premiered on April 14.

Harry Potter star Tom Felton was a very popular name during his time in the much-beloved franchise where he played fan-favorite character Draco Malfoy. He made a big impression among fans with his antagonistic portrayal of the character over 8 films but since the end of the film, he has not done anything significant up to that level since the franchise’s end.
Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone
The next decade saw him appear in supporting roles in films like Belle, Risen, Megan Leavey, and A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, but he was not the standout in any of them. Fans are already concerned that his movie career is fading away while Felton on the other hand, is venturing into his musical side of him and recently released an album. But fans are not happy with this and are totally eviscerating his album.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) debuted on PVOD to #1 April 9, which it has enjoyed for a week; that will end with “Dune: Part 2” (Warner Bros.), which debuts today after 46 days in release.
Both films still are in the box office Top 10. “Panda” actually rose one position to #4 this weekend, with its 29 percent drop the lowest of any holdover on the list. It still has a shot at a $200 million domestic gross. “Dune 2,” which was #5 this weekend and will get close to $300 million, will likely minimize the impact of parallel home availability given its essential visual presentation.
Based on presales, “Dune 2” is already #6 on iTunes top 10 list (ranked by transactions). Other platforms stick to currently available titles, but it would be surprising if it’s not immediately #1 on both iTunes and Fandango.

For those of us who religiously watch “Sex and the City” on whatever platform it is currently streaming on (hi), April 1 is an exciting day. That’s the day the popular HBO series starring Sarah Jessica Parker is coming to Netflix — for the very first time. And TBS reruns this is not: This is the full, unedited, groundbreaking show, now just waiting for viewers new and old to do a Netflix binge. (Paging Gen Z!)
Of course, there are plenty of other exciting TV shows and movies hitting Netflix in April 2024. Movie thrills include Jessica Chastain-starring “Molly’s Game” making its way back to the streamer, as well as perennial rom-com fave “You’ve Got Mail.” On the TV side, there’s new series “Dead Boy Detectives,” from showrunner Steve Yockey, and from the same universe as “The Sandman,” based on the beloved comic series from Neil Gaiman.

With the 2024 Oscars in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking toward 2025. It’s early, but not too early to start making predictions about what movies might contend for the Oscars next year.
The 97th Academy Awards may wind up dominated by an unusual number of blockbuster sequels to films that won big previously. There are also some period pieces, some comeback vehicles, and some movies that were featured on last year’s list that got held back for this year.
Here are 20 films to know for the 2025 Oscars. Some of them are locks, some of them are long shots, and all of them are worth keeping an eye on throughout 2024 as their Academy Awards chances rise and fall.
“A Real Pain”
One of three films on this list that have screened publicly as of publication time, road dramedy “A Real Pain” was the buzziest title out of Sundance this year.

Filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite made a big splash in 2013 with her Orcas-in-Seaworld-captivity documentary “Blackfish.” And ever since, she’s transitioned back and forth from dramatic features (“Megan Leavey” and “Our Friend”) to documentaries (“The Grab”). And making her most ambitious leap for her next drama, she directs “I.S.S.,” a space station science fiction thriller film.

“Such a weird habit that I’ve got into today,” says Dan Tapster, the showrunner for Life on Our Planet. “I’ll say, ‘Yeah, we were there to film mammoths. Yeah, people, we’re here to film a T-Rex.’”
And yet, there isn’t really a better way to describe what the team of Life on Our Planet had to do for years to create the footage that makes up the documentary series. Of course, being CGI VFX, the prehistoric stars of the series are a good deal more compliant than the stars of your average nature documentary. But it also required much more planning.
“More so than with our normal series, there was a lot more pre-production,” says Sophie Lanfear, the producer-director and writer of episodes three and eight. “This had an extended phase of research and development before we even went into the field and shot stuff.

Washington, Aug 31 (Ians) A team of NASA scientists is in the final stages of preparing for the arrival of the first US asteroid sample — slated to land on Earth in September on Osiris-REx spacecraft.
Osiris-REx, the first US mission to collect a sample from an asteroid, will return to Earth on September 24 with material from asteroid Bennu. It is carrying an estimated 8.8 ounces of rocky material collected from the surface of the asteroid Bennu in 2020.
A mockup of an Osiris-REx sample capsule was dropped on Wednesday from an aircraft and landed at the drop zone at the Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range in the desert outside Salt Lake City. This was part of the mission’s final major test prior to the arrival of the actual capsule.

Bleecker Street has picked up the U.S. rights to the sci-fi thriller I.S.S., directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and starring Ariana DeBose and John Gallagher Jr.

Time may be an ever-flowing river, but it's hard to believe it's been 30 years since the first (and best) "Jurassic Park" movie graced the big screen. Universal Products & Experiences and Amblin Entertainment knew just how to market/commemorate the occasion, however, and set up an immersive experience at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. The experience is replete with more than a few photo opportunities from some of the film's most memorable moments as well as the chance to nosh on some dino-shaped chicken nuggets while buying some 30th-anniversary merchandise via Amazon.
I had the chance to walk through the attraction, appropriately titled "Step Into Jurassic Park," and — after having a nice meet-and-greet with a baby raptor at the door — was eager to follow in the footsteps of doctors Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, Malcolm Reynolds, and yes, even that asshat of a lawyer, Donald Gennaro, as they enter through the gates...

While the Cold War has long been over a second one brews between the USA and Russia inside “I.S.S.,” Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s frustratingly broad yet stylish space thriller that just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Considering the growing political tensions between the two countries today, this is a movie one might be tempted to adorn with adjectives such as “timely” and “urgent.” Except “I.S.S.”—a title inexplicably fashioned with three periods—is too generic a genre exercise to matter, one that vaguely orbits notions such as trust, selflessness, teamwork and the hazards of blind nationalism with the most simplistic messages to transmit about them.
Working from a Blacklist script by debuting screenwriter Nick Shafir, Cowperthwaite’s pressure-cooker outing is set sometime in the near future, introducing us via an efficient title card to the brief history of the International Space Station (Iss), founded decades ago...

Although Rodriguez is now a successful actor, he started out in a different career. The star said his mother tricked him into this career choice.

Kevin Bacon has finally entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it is in an incredibly surprising way. He will be playing himself in the forthcoming "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" set to premiere on Disney+ on November 25, 2022. Thanks to mergers and multiverses, Bacon technically already is in the MCU, as he played Sebastian Shaw in "X-Men: First Class," but this is his official introduction to the current slate.
Because Bacon will be playing himself, it immediately brings to mind the incredibly fun game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon." The man has appeared in so many films for over 40 years now, in both leading and supporting parts, that it feels like he has worked with every actor out there. Surprisingly, this holiday special will be the first time he has worked with every actor that makes up the Guardians team. That means playing Six Degrees with this cast is pretty fun.

In 2013, Gabriela Cowperthwaite released her last documentary feature, Blackfish, about the captivity of Orcas, especially at SeaWorld. The film directly impacted the attendance and revenue of the theme park. Eventually, SeaWorld and its former CEO James Atchison had to pay more than 5 million to settle federal charges that they covered up the negative impact of the documentary.
Nearly a decade later, after dabbling in narrative with features like 2017’s Megan Leavey and 2019’s Our Friend, Cowperthwaite has returned to non-fiction with The Grab, which had its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The title, which is up for sale via WME, takes a look at the geopolitical forces behind global land and water rights, and the race for the world’s last farmable land. Ramón Rodríguez has been cast in the lead role of the “Will Trent” drama pilot at ABC.
The pilot had been given a cast contingent order back in February and will now officially move forward, with Rodríguez’s casting lifting the contingency.
Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling “Will Trent” novel series, the pilot follows Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (Gbi). Trent was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, he has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.
The character is further described as a loner within the law enforcement community who hides the severe dyslexia that went untreated during his traumatic childhood in foster care. But with the best clearance rate at the Gbi, he...

Pixar films notoriously take a long time to make — at least four to seven years. The dedicated animators craft settings and characters with meticulous detail. Sometimes, they like to have a little fun and cleverly sneak in some Easter eggs that aren't always easy to find. Occasionally, the Pixar animators reference other films such as "The Shining" carpet in Sid's house from "Toy Story" or the "Vertigo"-style poster at the Dream Productions studio in "Inside Out." There are usually lots of references made to other Pixar films, like Rex from "Toy Story" hidden in Wall-e's truck or the grape soda bottle cap (a brand featured...

In 2013, Gabriela Cowperthwaite won over critics and Sundance auds alike with her docu Blackfish – a box office hit that happened to make significant impact on one for profit aspect of animal captivity. For her third and forth features, she would move into narrative features with Pstd drama Megan Leavey, and the sappy end-of-life portrait Our Friend. This past February, Cowperthwaite launched into space with a 2020 Black Listed screenplay thriller starring Chris Messina, Pilou Asbaek, John Gallagher Jr., Costa Ronin and Masha Mashkova. Filming on I.S.S. took place in Wilmington, Nc, and seeing this is a weighty (budget north of 20 million) space film means a bit more time might be spent in post-production.…...

Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket” proved to be another highlight in this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but the person earning real raves is the film’s star, Simon Rex.
American audiences might better know him as Dirt Nasty from the “Scary Movie” franchise of films, but critics have called him “terrific” and “sensational” and said that he has earned his “Uncut Gems” moment for his performance as a washed-up porn star who is trying to groom a younger girl in the art. One Twitter user even suggested that Cannes should award him the Best Actor prize for his work.
“Give Simon Rex the Best Actor award. Sean Baker is a national treasure. I was glued to his twisted red state Americana vision for almost its entire two hours,” critic Jordan Ruimy wrote.

In showbiz, they have awards for everything — Oscars, Golden Globes and, of course, the Palme d’Or. Adult film actor Mikey Davies, aka “Mikey Saber,” has five Avn Awards, and he creates opportunities to humble-brag about them constantly now that he’s back in Texas City, the tiny Gulf Coast town he and girlfriend Lexi left together shortly after high school. They got married, moved to Los Angeles, and made a decent living shooting porn together for a time. But that was roughly 20 years ago, and now, Mikey has fallen on hard times. Or limp times, as the case may be.
There must be dozens, if not hundreds, of American indie films about young people escaping a dead end like Texas City and heading east or west, where opportunity lies. Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket” (the director’s first film to compete for the top prize at Cannes) is about...

During his stunning 45-year career, Berlind won Tonys for new musicals and plays and revivals of each, starting with the 1981 Best Play trophy for Amadeus — also a future Best Picture Oscar winner and one of several of his shows that transferred from the stage to the big screen — to the 2019 Best Revival of a Musical Tony for Oklahoma!
Berlind’s original shows swept the 2011 Tony Awards, with War Horse winning Best Play and The Book of Mormon taking Best Musical.
He also cornered the Tony market in 2017 when his Dear Evan Hansen won Best Musical and Hello, Dolly! starring Bette Midler took Best Revival of a Musical.

Sean Baker is close to wrapping “Red Rocket,” a secret film he has been shooting in Texas.
The dark comedy will star Simon Rex of the “Scary Movie” franchise and “Jack & Jill.” Plot details are being kept under wraps, but production should be finished this month. The film was independently financed and will be looking for distribution.
Baker isn’t the only director to take up his camera in secret. Steven Soderbergh applied a similar under-the-radar approach while making his upcoming movie “Let Them All Talk,” which will star Meryl Streep and Gemma Chan.
Work on “Red Rocket” commenced as Hollywood and the independent film community that Baker belongs to are trying to find a way to make movies safely during coronavirus. The film has employed industry standard safety protocols.

Updates on Chucky, Syfy’s upcoming TV show based on the Child’s Play movies, have been thin on the ground during the coronavirus crisis but plans to shoot it in Toronto this July are seemingly still in place. And now, details about its protagonist appear to have emerged.
According to YouTube channel 3C Films, the show will be headed up by a boy of middle school age who happens to be gay. The protagonist’s sexuality isn’t especially noteworthy on its own, though specifying a sexual preference for a character in that age bracket is unorthodox, to say the least.

One of the four remaining contestants in Group C of “The Masked Singer” — Astronaut, Night Angel, Rhino and T-Rex — didn’t make the cut in episode 9, which aired on March 25 on Fox. A huge part of the appeal of “The Masked Singer” is trying to figure out which famous faces are hidden beneath those masks. When it comes to beauty, Kate Mara is as relatable as it gets. Despite her status as a Hollywood frontrunner, the star's preference for barely-there makeup and her sensitive skin results in an uncomplicated routine that places value on skin-care. She's loyal to her favorite products and the simplicity of her beauty. Don't get us wrong, she's also far from a bore. With a quick Google search of the Megan Leavey actress, you can tell she enjoys change. Natural red tresses, blonde bobs, short chops—the star has tried it all (including extensions, which she hates). And, we've yet to see a style that doesn't flatter her. E! 2017 is just flying by! As we have now wrapped up August and are charging headfirst into the month of September, I wanted to once again put a bow on everything that’s come before the impending fall festival season. That way, it could focus us more clearly on the awards contenders to come, all the while remembering the hopefuls from the parts of 2017 we’ve completed. As such, today I’m putting out my list of the best of the first third of the year so far. Below you’ll see what the first eight months have brought us, including some films seen at festivals as well as early year releases that the precursors will surely forget, sadly. I don’t have any titles that I’m embargoed on right now, so this is as close to an exhaustive look at everything that’s hit screens between January 1st and today as possible.
