Welcome to Chippendales (2022)
Some biopic pitfalls, but otherwise well made and entertaining
First off, the actors all do a phenomenal job and really nail it. I've been a huge fan of Kumail Nanjiani ever since he voiced Prismo in Adventure Time, fans will be happy to know he brings his usual air of charm to this as well.
As a whole, it's really engaging and well made. The pacing of the first episode is a bit rushed, while some shows take 2 hours of content and turn it into 6 episodes, the first episode could've been extended to two. Otherwise the pacing is pretty great and the writing is well done for a biopic.
For a biopic. Unfortunately, it falls into some traps that every biopic does. It does that thing where the main character has a moment of inspiration that you know didn't happen in real life, and various other things for dramatic effect.
Normally that's fine, but the thing is that the way it actually happened in real life was even weirder and probably would've been more entertaining.
On top of that, where I take issue with it is with Paul Snider and Dorothy Stratten. While everything else is harmless, in reality Paul and Dorothy were much more tragic characters. The show makes Paul a more empathetic character, but.... I'd urge people to read their story Paul was more monstrous than the show makes him out to be and I actually think it does the audience a disservice to act like they can't handle it.
Easy (2016)
High Maintenance but for sex in Chicago instead of drugs in NYC
An easy going anthology that's about the everyday lives of people in Chicago, and how they navigate relationships or the role sex (or lack thereof) plays in their lives.
I wouldn't call it particularly engaging, but I also don't know that it's meant to be. There's something comforting about the normalcy found in the diversity of situations. It's also just really nice background watching while I'm working.
The comparisons to High Maintenance are obvious so comparing them, I feel like this show could do a better job of showcasing Chicago. Chicago seems to be experiencing a bit of a renaissance lately in the arts and media, and I was hoping to see some of that here. When you watch High Maintenance you can almost smell the city, you can feel it breathe through you. I'm only a season in but I haven't really felt that yet.
I Love That for You: GottaHaveIt (2022)
I love this for Vanessa Bayer
Its filled to the brim with that lovable charm from Vanessa Bayer, and then collides with the same for Molly Shannon. I was just really happy the whole episode, grinning ear to ear. I was so upset when the episode ended because I didnt realize this show just premiered. Cant wait for what direction this goes in.
Beef House (2020)
I...don't get it
Can't believe I'm saying this but I don't really understand this show. I'm a huge fan of their other work. It's like a parody of a sitcom, but it doesn't go too far into actually being a parody of have any of their signature surrealism, so it isn't funny in that sense, but because it's not trying to be a legitimate sitcom it also isn't funny in that sense. It's just in this middle ground of...nothing. There's occasional moments where it almost commits to the joke and then it backs off. Maybe it's too subtle for me idk.
Three Busy Debras (2020)
Decent start
I haven't seen the original live show but this is pretty decent. It feels like a well done Youtube video though. I enjoyed this but I can't see it holding up over an entire season.
Head Full of Honey (2018)
Unwatchable editing
There's about a cut every half second or so. It's edited so quickly I almost broke my neck. It makes it feel like you're watching a two hour trailer. I made it about 10 minutes in before I had to stop from sheer whiplash.
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (2019)
I can't get it out of my head
Comedy is polarizing. This isn't one of those "It's not as bad as other people say, I liked it!" reviews. Good and bad don't apply to this show. This is not a recommendation that will tell you you'll like it or not because I legitimately have not been able to predict it.
This show is ahead of the curve. You need to know that this show has its finger on the pulse of Millennial/Gen Z humor. For some of you, it might be exactly what you're looking for. For some, you had no idea you needed this in your life. For others, run for the hills. But you won't know til you watch it.
As for me, all I can say it that even the sketches I thought were stupid or bad, I still couldn't look away. I was always, for better or worse, interested to see where it was going, engrossed almost. And the sketches I liked? I go back to over and over and over. I can't get them out of my head. I wake up from nightmares thinking about having to marry my mother in law (you'll get the reference soon).
Either way, at the very least this show does something different. It has a distinct voice, it's weird and strange in ways you forgot were possible, and it sticks for better or worse. Give it a shot. I love it, but you may not and that's expected.
