* Based on a light novel series by Shigusawa Keiichi.

Composed in the form of a series of short stories, this is the story of the travels and observations of the human Kino and the talking motorbike Hermes. Kino and Hermes visit various fantastic countries - a country that can't coexist with others due to the development of telepathy (thus, a country that understands people's pain); a country striving to make everything equal, whose residents are extremely united (i.e., ruled by majority); and so on.

Small ripples are formed in the everyday lives of the people living in the various countries by the appearances of the unusual Kino. These ripples gradually become a major influence, rattling the foundations of their normal lives.

What will Kino and Hermes see in their travels? And what will be left in the hearts and minds of the people they encounter?

Edo Era, the world of the Tokugawa Shogunate. There were those who crept in the darkness. The Hiruko Ninja. They are fated to live in darkness, and die in darkness. However, if the power of the Dragon's Jewel, which has been handed down among the Hiruko since ancient times, is combined with that of the Priestess of Light, even the Hiruko can be bathed in light. There was one who, believing this, ran away from the Hiruko. And thus begins our story.

At the same time, a group of ninja called the Kimon Shu began targeting the stolen jewel as well as the Priestess of Light, who was living in a hidden village. The Kimon were working behind the scenes to bring about a revival of the Toyotomi. What is their intent? As the mystery deepens, the grand battle between the Hiruko and the Kimon over the treasure begins.

In that battle, there was a man who came in from rather unusual circumstances. His name: Kibagami Juubei. Having the ability to defeat enemies by using the art of Shippuu no Iai to create kamaitachi, he is a highly skilled "Ninja for Hire." Claiming he was just angry that they were disturbing his sleep, Jubei refuses to get involved in the fighting any further, but as fate would have it, he and the jewel and the Priestess of Light are brought together. Perhaps by coincidence or perhaps he was called by something, but in the hidden village he entered was the Priestess of Light, Shigure. The hidden village is destroyed in an attack by the Kimon Shu. Along with the aged ninja Dakuan and the boy ninja Tsubute who helped Shigure when she was being pursued, Jubei is pulled into the journey to protect Shigure. Having been told by Dakuan that she seems to have some connection with the Yagyuu Clan, Shigure sets off for the Yagyuu village, wanting to know the secrets of her own birth. The path is littered with the persistently pursuing Hiruko Ninja and Kimon Shu. One after the other, Jubei's Shippuu no Tachi cuts down the unearthly youjutsu that come after them.

* Based on an erotic game by Neko Neko Soft in 2001.

Brother Kenji and his younger sister Yuki live in a house under the same roof. Their parents are often away, and she secretly yearns for her older brother. One day though, a girl suddenly appears from the closet in Kenji's room. Strangely, her body is transparent, and she looks like a ghost. Her name is Hiyori, and as it turns out she is a dear childhood friend.

However, when Kenji and Hiyori become close, Yuki is quite shaken, and she recalls an unpleasant childhood memory: A much younger Kenji receives an unwanted ring from a toy dispenser, and will only part with it in exchange for a yo-yo. Desperately wanting to be his bride and seeing the ring as a sign thereof, Hiyori gets a yo-yo, but must suddenly leave town and move away. Hiyori gives the yo-yo to Yuki, to hand on to Kenji. But Kenji's ring could never be given to Hiyori, thus a promise was broken.

It becomes clear that the events in their childhood are related to Hiyori's showing up now...

Note: This standalone anime was preceded by a H OVA made in 2002 that goes through Yuki and Hyori's stories.

Parisian electronic duo Daft Punk has scored a feature-length film, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.

Overseen by Japanese animation legend Matsumoto Leiji and written and scored by Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the hour-long "space opera" completes the story begun by the videos of singles "One More Time," "Aerodynamic," "Digital Love," and "Harder Better Faster Stronger."

In those clips, an evil impresario kidnaps and brainwashes an extra-terrestrial rock group, transforms them into prefabricated pop stars, brings them back to Earth, and manipulates them to the top of the charts.

Each "movement" of this silent film is accompanied by a track from the duo's 2001 Virgin album, "Discovery." "The project was born in 2000, when we flew out to Tokyo with an hour of music and our own script," Bangalter says. "Leiji gave us a warm reception, and after listening to the music, he came on board immediately. Three years later, our dream has come true."

Nina Sakureiru, a witch from the Magic Kingdom, flunked magic school and was thus sent to Earth to improve her magic skills. There she quite literally bumps into the cool Tateishi Ayu, member of the tennis club, admired by her classmates, and also attends Hideo Middle School. Ayu soon finds out about Nina's secret identity as a witch, and they become best friends.

Life for both girls in eighth grade is far from simple though: Ayu has a crush on Kaji Tetsushi, the up-and-coming ace of the baseball team, but simply cannot confess her love to him. Nina on the other hand becomes fond of the reserved yet reliable Tsujiai Hiroki, also a member of the tennis club, even though she is already promised to someone in the Magic Kingdom. And to further complicate things, Nina's magic experiments tend to backfire... she is, after all, still a young witch in training.
