Labour’s candidate for Hendon, David Pinto-Duschinsky
The Labour Party has selected its parliamentary candidate for the Hendon constituency following a vote of party members yesterday.
David Pinto-Duschinsky – a management consultant who worked as an advisor to the previous Labour government – will renew his rivalry with Matthew Offord following his defeat at the 2019 general election, when the current MP won a majority of 4,230.
Hendon has been a target seat for Labour since Offord first won for the Conservatives in 2010 to narrowly eject Labour’s Andrew Dismore by just 106 votes.
Barnet Post understands that Pinto-Duschinsky got over 90% of the 160 votes cast yesterday with Rita Begum coming second. Milad Amini and Nneka Keazor were the other candidates shortlisted.
The successful candidate said it was an honour to be selected and thanked members for their support. He said: “I’m completely focused on building a better future for Hendon and working tirelessly for local people on their priorities like providing real help with the cost of living crisis, rebuilding our NHS, tackling Hendon’s housing crisis and cutting crime.”
Referencing his party’s problems with antisemitism, the candidate – whose father is a Holocaust survivor who came to the UK alone as a child refugee – said: “I’m committed to rooting antisemitism out of the Labour Party. For too long, Labour let the Jewish community down and allowed the poison of antisemitism to spread. Under Keir Starmer, we have made great progress but there is still more to do. I am totally dedicated to building a Labour Party that all can be proud to support.
He added: “We must win here to get a Labour government and it’s only Labour that can deliver a fresh start for Britain.
“Labour will be fighting the next election on economic growth to end the cost of living crisis. This will include our plan to buy, make and sell more in Britain, invest £28 billion a year to tackle the climate crisis and create the next generation of jobs.”
