Issues when file name is too long

edit

I ran into a couple of issues related to file name I tried to use was too long.

First, it looks like there is some discrepancy in how file name length is calculated on the "Describe" page (where it is provided by the user) and when the file is published (by clicking "Publish" on the above page). I may be wrong, but apparently the first check considers only the file name itself, while the other one considers filename plus extension. Then, the file name length test may pass on the "Describe" page, but then may fail at publishing stage.

Second, when the error happens at publishing stage, there seems to be no way to go back and fix the file name. I'm pretty sure going back was somehow possible in the past, but today I've run into this issue, and I can't find any way to do it: "Back" button in my browser is inactive, and there is no "Back" action in Upload Wizard interface as well (there is only "Retry failed uploads", which will always fail). So, I have to restart the upload process, loosing all image descriptions and other data I've filled on the "Describe" page. If it matters, I'm running Waterfox G6.0.17 on macOS Sonoma 14.5 (all software is up to date, as of today).

@DmitTrix: Thank you for your report. I've opened a Phabricator ticket, and I should have put you in CC to it. I hope I can give you more data soon, I'll try to push it at the next engineer meeting. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 11:39, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

EXIF date not added

edit

While uploading this photo, the date was missing and had to be entered manually. I have never had to do that before. UW has always scrapped the date from the EXIF but not this time. Why is UW getting worse, not better? Bidgee (talk) 04:45, 18 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Bidgee: Thank you for your report. I have opened a Phabricator ticket about it and I should have made you a subscriber to it. Being a bug, this should be triaged soon, so I hope to let you know as soon as possible about its resolution. --Sannita (WMF) (talk) 10:19, 18 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hint to existing file and filename

edit

In the former version of the upload wizard was a hint shown with a link to the existing file if I made a new upload with the same filename. Now I get only the hint. I have to open a new tab of the browser and look for the file by hand. That is slowing down the upload process in these cases. GeorgDerReisende (talk) 14:42, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Link would indeed be very valuable. Special:Upload does this, and I have it happen there about once a week. - Jmabel ! talk 15:53, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Error message at last step without indication where

edit

I just uploaded over 20 images, writing all the entries per hand. At the end before publishing I got an error message, but without any indication where. An emotional rollercoaster took place before I found two images with identical names. Do I recall wrong, that errors were once marked in red? It is really hard to find an error in a list that is several monitor heights long. MenkinAlRire (talk) 22:00, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
