The Amalgam Universe, also known as Earth-496 and Earth 1996, is a parallel universe created and destroyed as a result of a cross-multiversal conflict between warring cosmic beings.
History
Pre-Flashpoint
When two entities known as the Brothers (the embodiments of both the Marvel and DC Multiverses) remembered each other's existence, they pitted combatants from their respective realities against each other together. The winner would then destroy the loser (and its own respective multiverse). To prevent this from happening, the Living Tribunal and the Spectre joined forces and combined the two universes together, creating the Amalgam Universe. This universe had its own unique history which was a combination of the histories of both multiverses.
With the help of the hero named Access, the Living Tribunal and the Spectre managed to separate the two realities once more and the Amalgam Universe ceased to exist. Later, one of its heroes, Doctor Strangefate, would return and attempt to revive it; while Strangefate was defeated, it would ultimately be allowed to continue in its own pocket reality, which was given to Access for safekeeping.[1]

Post-Flashpoint
The Amalgam Universe was restored to existence in 2022 after Pariah merged the Pre-Crisis realities into Multiverse-1 at the climax of the Dark Crisis.[2] Days later, Earth 0's Barry Allen traveled to this universe, which is now designated as Earth 1996.[3]

- The Amalgam Universe is mainly featured in Amalgam Comics stories.
- The Amalgam Universe technically exists in both the DC and Marvel Multiverses, so both companies have given an Earth designation to this universe.
- Marvel Encyclopedia: Fantastic Four originally designated the Amalgam Universe as Earth-692; it was re-numbered Earth-9602 in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Alternate Universes 2005.
- The Essential Wonder Woman Encyclopedia originally designated it as Earth-496, which is probably its Pre-Flashpoint designation, in its entry on Angelica Wallis.
- In the Post-Flashpoint Multiverse it is known as Earth-1996, which is obviously a nod to 1996, the release year of the DC Versus Marvel crossover event and the creation of the Amalgam Comics imprint.
