Gary Lester, better known as Gaz, was a long time friend of John Constantine, even before he got into magic.
History
Gaz and John had known each other since they were eight years old in Liverpool, England. Once Gaz took him to the school bathroom and whispered in his ear that he overheard his older brother talking about the "great boyhood myth": porno. They were fast friends.[1]
Gaz had a childhood crush on John's sister Cheryl, while John secretly had a crush on him too.[2]
Later it was John's turn to tell his best friend the myths of his own, the world's darkest, most primal secrets, the secret shadows that could eat you alive if you let them: magic.[1]
John and Gaz formed a mystical-themed punk band called Mucous Membrane with John's first girlfriend, Veronica Delacroix. The three lived the rock star lifestyle and began getting more serious with the magic they practiced together.[3] But this was too much for Gaz; In the end, magic did eat him alive, just like John told him it would. Gaz died in John's arms. Gaz's spirit would never let him forget it, like none of the other ghosts of those who had the misfortune to meet Constantine would.[1]
Years later, while Constantine set up his new life in New York City, Gaz appeared to him to warn him of a monster that was killing spirits permanently. The two worked together to try to track down the monster, but the plan went sour, causing Gaz to be among the souls that were further killed, dying yet again due to Constantine's actions.[1] In the end, John discovered that the monster was none other than Veronica, another of the first victims of John's recklessness, who returned with a desire for revenge against him.[4]

- Gaz (Gary Lester) was created by Jamie Delano and John Ridgway, first appearing in Hellblazer #1. However, in the rebooted Prime Earth continuity his first appearance as part of the DC Universe is in Ming Doyle, James Tynion IV, and Riley Rossmo's New 52 Constantine: The Hellblazer series.
