Mister Mxyzptlk (Earth-423)

Mister Mxyzptlk was a sorcerer from the Fifth Dimension and an enemy of Superman.

History

Like all residents there, he was immortal. The first two thousand years of his existence was simply spent doing absolutely nothing. When he got bored of that, he spent another two thousand years doing nothing but good deeds. Then, when he tired of that, he decided to spend the next two thousand years being mischievous, bedeviling Superman.

After two thousand years of mischief, Mxyzptlk became bored again, deciding to spend his next two millennia of life being evil. To do this, he used his power to manipulate Superman's rogues gallery into becoming much more violent and dangerous, wreaking havoc on the lives of Superman and his loved ones. After a final assault ending with many of Superman's friends and enemies dead, Superman realized that Mxyzptlk was the only foe who had not appeared. Mxyzptlk appeared, explained his motive and chased after Superman and Lois Lane, shifting into his true five-dimensional form.

When all seemed lost, he made the mistake of mentioning the 30th Century, making Lois remember the tiny statuette the Legion of Super-Heroes gave Superman, depicting him wielding the Phantom Zone Projector during his final battle. Upon seeing Superman wielding the Projector, Mxyzptlk panicked and said his name backwards to return to the Fifth Dimension. However, at the exact second he would be returned, the Projector hit him, also sending him to the Phantom Zone, ripping Mxyzptlk apart and killing him.^[1]

• Mister Mxyztplk first appeared in Earth-Two continuity in Superman #30 by Jerry Siegel and Ira Yarbrough. The Earth-423 Mister Mxyzptlk made his only appearance in Action Comics #583 by Alan Moore and Curt Swan.
