Calypso is African music originated in Africa and specifically indigenous to Africa. Calypso was brought to the Caribbean via the transatlantic Slave Trade. It was not originated in Trinidad and Tobago. However there has been significant commercial development
of calypso from Trinidad however contemporary Calypso has changed the face of Calypso permanently particulary with the advent of King Short Shirts Ghetto Vibes Album of 1976 which is the only all hits calypso album ever produced. It is important to note that there are some ethnocentric views which fail to contribute this side of the history that truly involve the enormous and even extraordinary contributions to Calypso music by Calypsonians of other Caribbean Islands. More education and scholarly research will deliniate this perspective. See the book King Short Shirt Nobody Go Run Me by Dobrene O'marde.
