Real Kal Poly

Damn! I'd revert you just for trolling, but you went and referenced it. (My mother used to say, "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." Notwithstanding that vinegar catches Drosophila, you might back down a bit so that you don't seem as stubborn and opinionated as 71.202.205.242.)--Curtis Clark (talk) 02:43, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Marco, your recent edit to Cal Poly just evidences the fact that you are a racist. You criticize a campus because of the races of its student body? Wow. As I'm sure you're not aware, Prop 209 removed affirmative action in California public university admissions. Thus, everyone who's at Cal Poly earned their way in. Whatever their race happens to be, well, that's who earned it. But hey, if you want to live in a world that sees people as merely colors or races, you go right ahead. I'll leave your edit up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.202.205.242 (talk) 03:37, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
You now what I'm taking Dr. Clarks advice. I'm taking a break for this. I'll just edit engineering-related articles from now on.-- Marco Guzman, Jr  Chat  04:11, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Royal Navy

Your attempted move of Royal Navy has been reverted. Please read WP:COMMONNAME, and also WP:MOVE. David Biddulph (talk) 07:08, 6 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I second that. I do sympathise with your reasonings, and I even have fought other editors to keep "British Royal Navy" in some articles as clarification. Howver, you must gain a consensus through the move process first on this article's name, which has been debated many times in the past, without success in renaming it. - BilCat (talk) 07:11, 6 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I agree with your suggestion

I like your suggestion to use the full name for the Cal Poly engineering articles (i.e. "California State Polytechnic University, Pomona College of Engineering"). I think it would basically end the debate, and make the articles more stable. If that's what we do, I won't edit the names further. Let me know.

Pedantically, there should be a comma after Pomona: "California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, College of Engineering"; since the initial comma is intended to set "Pomona" out of the flow of the sentence, a trailing comma is needed if the sentence continues. Only pedants like me will notice, but, taken to an extreme, one can end up with "California State University, Sacramento's library", which to the uninitiated can suggest that Sacramento only has one library, named "California State University".--Curtis Clark (talk) 13:35, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Dr. Clark. You're right about the comma. My mistake. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.202.205.242 (talk) 09:03, 14 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

You know, I think we've gone a bit too far with eachother on here. I was literally sitting here a few minutes ago thinking about the most insulting thing I could write, and just kind of realized how absurd that is. For what it's worth, I apologize for my comments to you. Let's try to find some middle ground on the elided naming: maybe an officially/commonly known as section, a history section, or whatever. (I accidentally posted this first on your user page instead of your talk page--sorry about that). 71.202.205.242 (talk) 10:17, 2 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Some other useful Unicode tools: http://www.unipad.org/main/, http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelPad.html. The Cal Poly Pomona PDF phone book has a LaTeX step: A database query is used to create an XML file, which is converted using XSLT to LaTex. That file is then converted to PDF. The underlying database and applications have full Unicode support, but the font used in the PDF only covers Latin 1.--Curtis Clark (talk) 15:51, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of BroncoFusion

The article BroncoFusion has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

one-day local student event - not notable.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PamD (talk) 12:59, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I agree it should be deleted. Any article that primarily consists of the schedule of the upcoming event is automatically suspect as non-encyclopedic; what would the article look like ten years from now? I think a comparison to the ASI article is apt: ASI has a budget larger than a lot of companies in Wikipedia, it has existed for decades, and will likely exist as long as CPP. It owns buildings. BroncoFusion, in comparison, is fluff. In any given year it is important to the students who attend, and there will alsways be some sort of "welcome to campus" event, but there's no insurance that next year it won't be re-conceptualized and renamed.--Curtis Clark (talk) 13:22, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Cal Poly logo.svg

A tag has been placed on File:Cal Poly logo.svg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free image with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the image can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{non-free fair use in|article name that the image is used in}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the image. If the image has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

Since the image already exists in a low-resolution raster format, making a derivative work in vector format is unnecessary, thus not fair use. —Curtis Clark (talk) 03:08, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wouldn't a vector image be of better use in this case though? I'm not very fond of vector images thus far since I still find their usage cumbersome to a certain degree; however, I've notice most raster logos on Wikipedia being replaced by their vector counterparts. I think their resizing is easily achieved with no loss of quality. On a second thought I just noticed that at 2000px the letters come out weird. Meh, never mind. I still wonder if this image could be replaced by a vector one in the future though? As in, what if the raster image was nominated for deletion and the vector image became the only fair-use image pertaining the university's seal?-- Marco Guzman, Jr  Chat  03:37, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
So you're saying that a derivative image that does not accurately represent the seal is more fair-use than a raster image obtained from a CPP graphics site and uncontested by the university? We'll have to see how that works out.--Curtis Clark (talk) 13:08, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Star in logo of Spanish national football team

I see that you've added a star to the logo of the Spanish national team at File:Escudo_Badge_España_Spain.png, which as we all know is traditionally added by a team each time that they win the World Cup. Although I think it's great that Spain won, and I look forward to seeing the new logo with a star in it, I have to ask: is this what the actual team's logo will officially look like? That size star, that color, that position? Have they already officially adopted this change, or is this just your guess as to what the new logo might look like? Do you have a source? Sorry to be a wet blanket, but WP can't officially change the logo until the team does. Bry9000 (talk) 01:12, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I used this image as the base model. The golden star will be the same color as the trims on the crest's outline per Royal Spanish Football Federation guidelines. I was actually rooting for the Netherlands! Cheers. -- Marco Guzman, Jr  Chat  01:32, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Aha, I see. It's hard to tell whether that image is a valid source, but I'll leave it alone. Thanks. Bry9000 (talk) 01:54, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm actually working on a SVG image and someone had uploaded this other one. So, I decided that it would appease some of the new editors until the hype dies down in the first couple of days. I don't like the source more than you do and I hope to get the official aspect ratio of the star once the guidelines stipulate so. -- Marco Guzman, Jr  Chat  01:59, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

Rollback feature

I saw your interest on another talk page to try using WP:Huggle. Since the program requires the WP:Rollback flag to be enabled on your account, I have set this flag for you, as you appear to me to have a good grasp of what is and what is not vandalism. Please read both links carefully, though, as it is possible without much error to make a mess when using Huggle, and note that rollback is to be used for blatant vandalism only, nothing else (i.e. non-constructive, but good-faith edits.). Happy editing. Courcelles (talk) 12:01, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cal Poly Name

Hey Marco. I know that this has been beaten to death over the years, but I undid some of the changes to the "Name" section in the California Polytechnic State University article. I made it simply a brief section indicating the names. I made sure that Cal Poly Pomona was not referred to as a former "extension" campus, but as a former satellite campus. We can do the same to Pomona's article if you like to. I think if we make these things brief, we can avoid conlfict. What do you think? Sawagner (talk) 21:25, 8 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

All changes to Wikipedia articles that comply within the content standards pertaining WP:NPOV, WP:VERIFY, WP:NOR, and related, are not only welcomed but encouraged. A tag has been placed on File:Tigres de Quintana Roo new logo.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Interview

Hi Marco, I am a Wikipedian and researcher from Carnegie Mellon University, working with Professors Robert E. Kraut and Aniket Kittur. We’ve published many scholarly papers on Wikipedia and are partnering with the Wikimedia Foundation on several new projects.

I have been analyzing collaboration in Wikipedia, especially Collaborations of the Week/Month. My analysis of seven years of archival Wikipedia data shows that Collaborations of the Week/Month substantially increase the amount and nature of project members’ contributions, with long lasting effects. We would like to talk to Wikipedians to better understand the processes that that produce this behavior change.

We’ve identified you as a particularly good candidate to speak with because of your involvement with the WikiProject Universities' Collaborations, which is one of those we’ve been investigating. It would really help us if you would be willing to have a short talk with us, less than 30 minutes of your time. We can talk via skype or instant messenger or other means if you’d prefer. Do you have time at any point during this week to chat? If so, please send an email to haiyiz@cs.cmu.edu or drop a line on my talk page.

Thanks!

Wikipedia Help Survey

Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Thank you for your time,

NYU-Poly people

I've declined your speedy. It could be a useful split--there are enough people to justify it according to our usual way of handling university articles, and it might be much easier to watch. See my comment at the talk p. for the main university article; I'd like your opinion. At this point, there's some content that would need merging in any case. And also there is a good deal of content that would need rewriting from either version. Before I start such an extensive job, I'd like to decide which way to go.
