Cuartero is known for its rich agricultural lands and its scenic natural attractions.

==History==

Cuartero was formerly a part of the municipality of [[Dao, Capiz|Dao]]. It became a separate municipality on June 15, 1951, by virtue of Republic Act No. 605. The name Cuartero was derived from the Spanish word "cuartel", which means barracks or headquarters. This was because Cuartero served as the headquarters of the Spanish forces during the [[Philippine Revolution]] and the [[Philippine-American War]].

==Geography==

Cuartero has a total land area of 106.58 square kilometers (41.15 square miles), which constitutes 4.11% of Capiz's total area. It is bounded by the municipalities of [[Dumarao, Capiz|Dumarao]] to the north, [[Ma-ayon, Capiz|Ma-ayon]] to the east, [[Dao, Capiz|Dao]] to the south, and [[Jamindan, Capiz|Jamindan]] to the west. Cuartero has a hilly and mountainous terrain, with the highest elevation being 520 meters (1,710 feet) above sea level. Cuartero has two major rivers: the Agnaga River and the Mahabang Sapa River, which provide irrigation and hydroelectric power to the municipality.

Cuartero has a [[tropical climate]], with two distinct seasons: the wet season from June to November, and the dry season from December to May. The average annual temperature is 27.5 °C (81.5 °F), with the warmest month being May and the coolest month being January. The average annual rainfall is 1,258 millimeters (49.5 inches), with the wettest month being September and the driest month being February.

According to the 2020 census, Cuartero has a population of 27,993, with a density of 263 inhabitants per square kilometer or 680 inhabitants per square mile. The population grew by 2.13% from the 2015 census figure of 27,408. The average household size is 4.25, with a total of 7,093 households in the municipality. The majority of the population speaks [[Capiznon language|Capiznon]], [[Hiligaynon language|Hiligaynon]], or [[Tagalog language|Tagalog]] as their native language.

==Economy==

Cuartero is classified as a 4th class municipality, with an annual regular income of ₱ 119.1 million (2020). The main sources of income are the locally sourced revenue, the internal revenue allotment, and other shares from the national tax collection. The main economic activities are agriculture, fishing, and commerce. The major crops grown are rice, corn, coconut, banana, and sugarcane. Cuartero, officially the Municipality of Cuartero (Capiznon/Hiligaynon: Banwa sang Cuartero; Tagalog: Bayan ng Cuartero), is a 4th class municipality in the province of Capiz, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 27,993 people.[4]
