Thais is a genus consisting of a number of species of medium to large sized (shell length around 3 to 13 cm, depending on the species) gastropods in the family Muricidae. They are known as rock shells or dog winkles. The shell is generally squat, short-spired, and solid, with a large body whorl. Sculpture varies according to the species, but generally consists of ribs, riblets, nodules, and tubercles. The animals are predatory, living in rocky environments close to shore or in the intertidal zone.
