Capulidae, or the cap shells, are a taxonomic family of limpet-like sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the order Sorbeoconcha.
Description
Species in this family are cap-shaped or limpet-like molluscs, closely allied to the Hipponicidae, but of lighter build, and with a small coiled apex that often extends beyond the margin. The aperture is usually almost as large as the shell itself.
Sculpture is clathrate, covered by a periostracum that is often fringed or hirsute. The animal has a short broad head, an elongated foot and a very short siphon.
The radula formula is 2+1+1+1+2. The central tooth is subquadrangular, multicuspid, lateral large with a finely crenulated margin, and the paired marginals curved, sharp and without denticles.
They are found attached to bivalve and gastropod shells or sometimes stones, and are ciliary, filter or parasitic feeders.
