Smosh.com is a web site that was created by Anthony Padilla in 2002. Friends made some content for smosh.com and helped pay for the server until early 2003. Regular members of the site are known as, "Smoshers".
History
Website History
- Smosh started out as a free forum for a group of High School friends in Carmichael, California in mid 2002. In late 2002, it soon evolved into its own website with a .com domain. The new site featured a few videos, and had a couple of flash movies and games that some of the forum users created. Despite the new features, the users of Smosh generally went to Smosh for the use of the forum.
- In June 2003, Anthony coded the Flash Gateway, a user submitted Flash system. It was modeled after Newgrounds' Flash Portal.
- On January 29th 2004, smosh.com got its first and only upgrade thus far, a site redesign.
Video History
- In August of 2005, Anthony and Ian opened a can of worms when they released their first video in a long line of many, the Power Rangers Theme Song. It was well liked by friends, so Anthony and Ian started making more videos for the Internet.
- In September of 2005, Ian and Anthony released the Mortal Kombat Theme Song, which gained much popularity throughout the Internet. The Mortal Kombat Theme Song gained much critical acclaim, and set the duo off into making a short film starring a Jesus action figure, dubbed "The Epic Battle: Jesus vs Cyborg Satan" in October. It also, gained good reviews, but wasn't a huge hit.
- On November 28th Anthony and Ian released their most popular video ever, The Pokémon Theme Song. It received critical acclaim, and quickly became the most viewed video on YouTube. The New York Times, in an article about YouTube said about the video, "Judging from the effusive if subliterate comments section, it's not disliked by anyone, which is rare. The comments section can be harsh."
- Since then, Ian and Anthony have released theme songs for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Transformers.
- The Epic Battle: Jesus vs Cyborg Satan started Ian and Anthony off on producing skits. In between major videos, Ian and Anthony have released 6 skits which include Ian mocking the so-called 'emo' video bloggers in "Garrett's Blog", playing Battleship in Battleship, Smosh Short 1: Dolls, and an old skit, The Evil Chain Letter. Most recently they have released a video entitled Boxman, a modern opera/cautionary tale of a poor boy who is converted into a half-box, half-man in a freak accident.
- Anthony and Ian also manage a second username on Youtube, where they post videos not deemed worthy for the masses. That profile can be accessed here
Removed/Altered Videos
Garrett's Blog, a YouTube exclusive, was removed from public viewing because there were too many viewers that didn't understand that Garrett was a fictional character. Many of the viewers became upset because the character was extremely conceited and ignorant. It also was hated by followers of the self-proclaimed: "top subscribed YouTube member", FilthyWhore, who was mocked in the video.
The Dramatic Voice Experiment, originally uploaded to Smosh's secondary YouTube profile, had to be removed and re-edited due to legal issues.
Fame
The site's featured duo, Ian and Anthony, are most widely known as the masterminds behind Youtube's former #1 most viewed video of all time for 6 months/the all-time "Most Discussed" video- The Pokémon Theme Song. Since the Smosh boys' video debut on YouTube in November 2005, Anthony and Ian have released 5 theme songs, including: Power Rangers, Mortal Kombat, Pokémon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Transformers. There have been over 14,000,000 views of the Pokémon Theme Song alone (as of July 2006) and it has been featured in an article by the New York Times in an article about YouTube on April 7th, 2006 (View the article here).
Ian and Anthony's videos have also been featured on a sister site of 1up.com. Gamevideos.com has hosted the Mortal Kombat Theme. It was also featured on YouTube and was displayed on Google Videos' Popular section for many months.
Ian and Anthony's Pokémon video has been shown on ABC's Nightline (View the video here). A Chinese Television station has also dubbed over the footage to be broadcasted in China (View the video on YouTube).
Ian and Anthony were featured in the August 2006 issue of Teen People in an article about Youtube on page 148.
Services
Besides providing free entertainment and a Gateway for aspiring Macromedia Flash artists, the site is now selling "Smosh" T-shirts and sweatshirts highlighting different points in the videos.
Website Forums
In addition to having a collection of self-made videos, viewer submitted videos, and user-made flash animations/games, Smosh hosts a small, but active forum. Members from around the world including the USA, Canada, Australia, Israel, and Europe log on everyday to discuss topics that generally interest the 15-24 year old crowd.
There are regular features on the Smosh forums, including Gripster2000's Noob of the Day (NOTD), where Gripster2000 will search through the entire forum for a thread that meets a certain criteria. NOTD is a spin-off from Gripster's previous daily thread -- The Daily Links where NOTD was only a feature. This criteria is listed on the NOTD main thread and whomever Gripster choses as the NOTD feels the burn from many users. This was created after an uproar by the veteran users in response to the behavior of the new users.
Despite the huge success of the videos, the massive boost of popularity has angered nearly all of the older users of the forums, as now the forums are constantly clogged with "noobs" that have subsequently driven almost every original member off of the board.
