The Institute of Optronics (IOP) was established in May 1984 as a project and worked under Ministry of Defense (MoD), Government of Pakistan.
Dr. Akram Hussain Abidi, a scientist from NASA, was its first Director General. Presently the organization is placed under the of Ministry of Defence Production, Government of Pakistan.
