Etymology
[edit]From Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (aparmaq), probably from *alıb barmak, equivalent to alıb, converb of almaq (“to take”) + varmaq (“to go”). Compare Uzbek obormoq, Uzbek obormoq, Uyghur ئاپارماق (aparmaq) and dialectal Turkish aparmak with the same meaning. Compare also Shor апар (“to take away”).
Figurative senses are probably a calque of Russian вести (vesti).
