Ia dilahirkan secara prematur di Saginaw, Michigan dengan ibu Lula Mae Hardaway. Ada kemungkinan ia mendapatkan terlalu banyak oksigen dalam inkubatornya, dan hal ini menyebabkan kebutaan.
